The Fake Best Friend Chapter 1

The morning light spilled through our bedroom curtains like warm honey, soft yet merciless in its insistence. I stirred beneath the cool sheets, half‑dreaming, half‑awake, already anticipating the day ahead. Twenty‑eight today.

Marcus had left before dawn, the scent of his cologne still haunting my pillow. I could almost feel the ghost of his lips brushing my forehead, hear the low murmur—"Happy birthday, beautiful." It used to melt the air between us.

For a breath, everything felt perfect.

Until it didn't.

A small gift box waited on my nightstand, paper glinting gold in the morning rays. Inside lay a delicate silver bracelet engraved with our wedding date. My chest constricted. Three years married, and he still remembered every little thing. Or so I thought.

My phone buzzed.

Emily: "Birthday girl! Ready for your spa day? I'm grabbing coffee and picking you up at 10! Don't make me break in."

A grin tugged at my lips. Emily had always been that unstoppable burst of energy—my confidante, my partner in chaos since freshman year of design school, the woman who knew my favorite latte order, my worst fears, the exact joke to pull me back from the edge.

When she arrived, she swept through my doorway on a breeze of citrus perfume and laughter. Camera bag bouncing at her hip, messy bun balanced on her head, she was every bit the artist she claimed to be.

"Ready for the best birthday ever?" she announced, crushing me in a hug that smelled like vanilla shampoo and nostalgia.

"You really didn't have to—"

"Oh, please," she interrupted with a mock eye‑roll. "It's not every day my best friend turns twenty‑eight. Besides, Marcus is working late, right? Someone's got to celebrate you properly."

The spa was paradise—steam heavy with eucalyptus, stones radiating slow warmth into my muscles. We lay side by side, cocooned in white towels, laughter echoing softly against marble walls.

"Remember when we thought twenty‑eight was ancient?" Emily mused, cucumber slices shielding her smirk.

"Speak for yourself," I shot back. "I am ancient."

"You look amazing," she said. "Marriage suits you."

Something about her tone snagged at me—too quiet, too loaded. I looked over, but her eyes were covered, unreadable, so I let it go.

Afterward, we wandered through boutiques, arms laced with glossy bags, the easy chatter of old friends filling every silence. Emily insisted on buying me a silk scarf, sea‑green and shimmering. "You have to let me," she pleaded. "It matches your eyes."

She had an artist's gaze—always noticing color, light, contrast. One of the things I loved most about her.

"Try this one." She held up an emerald dress that looked far too beautiful for errands and deadlines.

"It's gorgeous," I admitted. "But when would I wear it?"

"You don't need a reason," she said. "Some things exist simply to be beautiful."

When I slipped it on, I caught her reflection in the mirror. She wasn't smiling. Her expression was… wistful. Almost aching. When our eyes met, she looked away too fast.

"It's perfect on you," she whispered.

By evening we sat in our favorite café, sharing chocolate cake, shopping bags at our feet. I reached for her hand, sticky with frosting, and laughed. "Thank you for today. Marcus feels bad for working late, but honestly? This was exactly what I needed."

Her fingers tightened a second longer than normal before retreating. "He'll make it up to you. He always does."

On the walk to our cars, the air turned cooler, whipping through her hair. She hugged me tighter than usual.

"Thank you for being my best friend," I murmured. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

"Forever," she whispered back—a word that had carried us from college dorms to adulthood. Only this time, it trembled.

I watched her taillights fade, unease coiling low in my chest. She'd been distant for weeks—canceling plans, dodging eye contact—but I told myself it was just work stress. Friendships had seasons, didn't they?

The drive home was peaceful until I turned into the driveway and noticed the porch light off. Marcus never forgot.

The front door stood slightly open.

"Marcus?" My voice wavered. "You home?"

Soft jazz floated from the living room, candlelight casting flickers over the walls. Two wine glasses sat on the coffee table, one half‑empty, two lipstick stains glinting scarlet in the glow.

A surprise, maybe? A mid‑shift return?

Then—voices.

Emily's. Low, urgent. "We can't keep doing this, Marcus. We have to tell her."

Marcus's reply—barely audible, raw. "I know. I just… I'm not ready."

"I'm two months pregnant."

Everything inside me stopped. My hands went numb, shopping bags slipping soundlessly to the floor.

I walked down the hallway as if through water, the flickering light stretching my shadow long across the walls. The bedroom door was ajar. Through the gap I saw them—side by side on my bed. Emily's hand resting over her stomach. Marcus's face buried in his palms.

They looked up. Time shattered.

"Claire," Emily breathed.

And in that single word, my world split clean in two.

Sometimes the loudest heartbreak is whispered.
