THE EMPTY GRAVE Chapter 1

The cold air stung my face as I pushed open the hidden trapdoor beneath the laboratory floor. My hands trembled—whether from fear or determination, I couldn’t tell. Beneath the door lay a narrow passage, dark and unmarked, entirely out of place in the sterile surroundings of the university.

The damp walls glistened faintly under the dim light of my lantern, and the smell of earth and mildew clung heavily to the air. Each step I took echoed in the tight space, amplifying my unease.

Every fiber of my being screamed that this was wrong, that I had stumbled into a place I wasn’t meant to find. But curiosity, as always, overpowered caution.

The passage opened into a small, circular chamber. The air here was heavier, colder, and tinged with an unplaceable sense of foreboding. At its center stood an ornate coffin, its surface carved with intricate, otherworldly symbols. These symbols seemed alive, their lines almost pulsating under the weak light.

My breath hitched. What was this doing here, hidden beneath the university? Every logical explanation eluded me. I moved closer, my fingers grazing the coffin’s polished, icy surface. It felt colder than it should have, as though it had absorbed centuries of frost.

The lid resisted as I pushed, groaning loudly and shattering the oppressive silence. The sound reverberated off the chamber walls, making me wince.

And then I saw it.

Nothing.

The coffin was empty.

A strange weight settled over me, more oppressive than the sight of a body would have been. The emptiness seemed deliberate, as though it concealed something far more dangerous than a corpse. My thoughts raced, seeking answers that didn’t come. Then my gaze fell on a stack of papers beside the coffin, their edges curling with age.

I picked them up cautiously. The pages were brittle, yellowed, and covered in jagged handwriting. The ink had bled into the paper in places, the frantic scrawl barely legible. Words and symbols repeated, layered over one another in desperate, chaotic patterns. A phrase caught my eye: *The seal is broken.*

A faint noise behind me broke my concentration—a soft shuffle, barely audible but unmistakable in the stillness.

“Curiosity is a dangerous thing.”

The voice was low and calm, yet carried an edge sharp enough to slice through the tension. My breath hitched as I turned. A man stood at the edge of the chamber, his form partially obscured by shadow.

“Who are you?” I managed, though my voice trembled.

“Wrong question,” he said, stepping into the dim light. His face was sharp, his eyes cold and calculating. “The better question is: what are you doing here?”

“I—I didn’t mean to intrude,” I stammered.

“Enough.” He raised a hand, silencing me with a single, commanding gesture. “You’ve seen too much.”

Panic gripped me. “I swear, I won’t tell anyone!”

His lips curled into a humorless smile. “And you think I’d trust that?”

As he stepped closer, the light caught on something in his hand—a blade, its surface gleaming faintly. My stomach churned, and my pulse thundered in my ears.

“Please,” I said, my voice cracking. “I didn’t mean to—”

“Lies,” he cut me off, his tone harsh and unyielding.

I backed away instinctively, my shoulders hitting the cold edge of the coffin. My eyes darted toward the exit, but his figure loomed between me and escape.

“You have no idea what you’ve stumbled into,” he said, his voice dropping into a menacing growl. “But understand this: if you breathe a word of what you’ve seen here, you won’t live to regret it.”

His words hung in the air like smoke, suffocating and inescapable. I pressed myself harder against the coffin, clutching the brittle papers as though they could shield me. My heart pounded, each beat a deafening drum in the oppressive silence.

And then he was gone.

He vanished into the shadows as abruptly as he had appeared, leaving me frozen in place. My legs buckled, and I slid down, collapsing against the coffin. My lungs burned, and it took me a moment to realize I’d been holding my breath.

The chamber seemed darker now, the air heavier with the weight of his warning. My hands tightened around the stack of papers, their edges biting into my skin. The inked symbols and desperate words stared back at me, their meanings elusive but undeniably foreboding.

I should have left them there. I should have walked away.

But something had already taken hold of me—a pull I couldn’t resist. The emptiness of the coffin, the jagged scrawls on the pages, the man’s ominous presence—all of it wove a web I couldn’t escape.

Whatever secrets this place held had already begun to entangle me, dragging me into something far beyond my comprehension.

And deep down, I knew there was no way out.
