The Disputed Refrigerator Chapter 1

To store some herbal teas, I set up a mini-fridge right in my cubicle.

A colleague, fresh off maternity leave, asked if she could chill her freshly pumped breast milk in it.

"Easy peasy," I said, agreeing without a second thought. She was thrilled.

The next morning, she shot me a message in the company Slack, urgently summoning me to the hospital.

Her toddler had a case of diarrhea, and she blamed my 'defective' fridge for spoiling the milk. She demanded I cover the medical expenses and losses.

Annoyed, I replaced the mini-fridge with a larger one—accessible to everyone but her.

After the boss okayed it, I installed the new mini-fridge which became home to the expensive herbal teas my mom swore by.

I closed the fridge with a sigh of relief, only to be cornered by an eager face.

"Mia..." My colleague, Lisa Argal, gave me puppy eyes. "Any chance I can store some breast milk in there?"

Post-maternity leave, Lisa was still sneaking off to the restroom to pump, a tough gig for sure.

"It's just a little bit, won't crowd your fridge," she added, holding up a small milk bag after noticing my hesitation.

Lisa often vented about how her milk production dropped since returning to work, no matter how many lactation shakes she downed.

Her milk bag today, however, was surprisingly full, albeit a tad pale.

"Why not?" I thought. There was still space in the fridge.

With a grin, I opened the fridge. "Go for it."

Lisa's smile widened as she nestled the bag among the shelves, then linked arms with me back to our desks.

"Hey Mia, what's in the herbal teas you're taking?"

"Oh, just some stuff for dampness," I replied, dodging the truth.

Discussing my fertility issues with coworkers wasn't on my agenda, nor was explaining the costly meds I'd tried.

Those teas? They cost a pretty penny.

Barely awake the next day, my phone blew up with alerts.

Lisa had blasted a message across our work chat, urging me to high-tail it to the Pediatric Hospital.

Only then I noticed she hadn't shown up for work.

"@Mia, get over to the Pediatric Hospital ASAP. My son's sick."

Her son's ailing and she's calling me out?

My desk neighbor, Christine, zoomed over in her chair, all ears.

"Mia, what'd you do to get on Lisa's bad side?"

Totally clueless, I shrugged. "Beats me."

Scanning the office, I spotted the mini-fridge.

"Ah, she stored her breast milk there yesterday."

Christine clapped her thigh. "Bingo! She's pinning it on you."

"How's that my problem?"

Christine whispered conspiratorially, "Her son's been a magnet for bugs lately, and the bills are stacking up. Her mother-in-law's a real Scrooge, wouldn't even spring for health insurance."

"You're always nose-deep in work; you miss all the juicy gossip. You really shouldn't have let her use your fridge."

My mind was racing.

"@Mia, my son got diarrhea from the milk stored in your fridge. Get here NOW!!!"

Another buzz from my phone.

"You'd better show up," Christine pressed. "She's laying a paper trail in the group chat. Dodge this, and she'll make it a big deal with HR, and that's gonna sting."

Following Christine's nudge, I cabbed it to the hospital.

I found Lisa and made a beeline for the emergency room.

"Why the delay?" Lisa glared at me, clutching her whimpering infant.

"Why drag me here over your kid's bug?" I retorted, my patience wearing thin.

A loud and garish woman—clearly Lisa's mother-in-law—latched onto my arm, shouting, "You bet you're involved! My grandson's ill because of what was in your fridge. You ready to foot the bill if he worsens?"

Accusations flew, and I was livid.

I tried to pull away, but she clung tighter. "Jealous of Lisa's baby boy, huh? I know you're older and single. Wanting a kid that bad doesn't give you the right to mess with hers!"

Her tirade was so loud, that spittle sprayed my face.

Her voice was so loud that it echoed through the ER like a megaphone.

Enraged, I shot back, "I did Lisa a solid by storing her milk, and this is the thanks I get?"

Lisa made a half-hearted attempt to calm her down, but the old bat just shrugged her off and kept on yelling. "Didn't you say you had herbs in there too? Who knows what kind of shady stuff you got mixed in there, tainting my grandson's milk?"

"You're coughing up for his hospital stay, got it?"

2

The woman was hefty and aggressive, pushing me around like I was nothing.

A head shorter, I swayed from her shoves, nearly losing my balance.

Frustrated, I confronted Lisa, "Look, I get you're worried, but why blame my fridge when my teas are fine?"

Lisa dodged my gaze, tears spilling over as whispers filled the air. "I dunno, okay? He's just a baby and hasn't eaten anything else. It was only the milk in your fridge. You knew how critical that milk was, and you didn't even check with me..."

That was my fridge!

Since when do I need your approval to adjust the settings?

Why didn't you just buy your own fridge?

I wish I could rewind to yesterday and slap some sense into myself.

Why play the good Samaritan for someone who just doesn't appreciate it?

Before I could even react, bystanders started pointing fingers.

"Young girls today, so selfish. They do one tiny favor and act like they're saints, without a care for the consequences."

"Poor kid, look at him—skin and bones. Just pitiful."

Lisa's tears flowed heavier, her face a mess of sorrow.

Her mother-in-law stood taller, righteousness in every word. "Listen to them! This is on you! Pay up now, or if anything happens to my grandson, it's on your head!"

And before I knew it, she was dragging me to the cashier, not allowing me a moment to defend myself.

Confused and overwhelmed, the surrounding murmurs felt like choking hands.

Left with no other option, I paid up, teeth gritted in frustration.

She finally released me. "That's how it should be. You screw up, you pay up. And keep your wallet ready for any more bills—send the money directly to Lisa. Actually, add me on WhatsApp, and send it straight to me!"

After snatching my phone and fiddling with it, she reluctantly let me go.

Thousands down the drain, my wallet lighter and my spirit crushed. How had I been so gullible?

Do good deeds really only bring trouble, with accusations and guilt tossed in for good measure?

The more I thought, the angrier I got. I nearly broke down right there outside the hospital.

I was raised to be kind and to cultivate goodwill.

"Step back, and the world grows larger," my mom always said.

And it had always seemed to work—I'd never really encountered malice or adversity.

Even if problems popped up, there were always folks around to smooth things over, or the issues never got so intense that they confronted me directly.

But Lisa and her mother-in-law were truly testing me, stomping on my goodwill.

I felt tainted, like I might never shake off this grime.

Riding the empty subway, the grimy feeling clung to me, my body chilling with each stop.

Then, an ad for a state-of-the-art fridge flickered on—a promise of frost-free brilliance.

They may have played dirty, which I couldn't compete with.

But I wasn't out of the game yet...

3

Back at the office, I laid out the whole mess to Christine.

Her expression morphed from confusion to rage to pity.

"Lisa's mother-in-law is one tough cookie. Heard from the grapevine that she could really put on a show, and got her family wrapped around her little finger.

"And Lisa? Always looking to score a freebie. We usually turn a blind eye, but now she's ditched her dignity for some quick cash... Guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!"

Christine said, shaking her head and making a face.

Finally, she patted my hand, all sage-like, "Mia, take it as a pricey life lesson—sometimes you gotta pay to learn."

I nodded and steadied myself.

I fired up my computer and put through another request.

This time, I was gunning for a swap from the mini-fridge to a big, double-door fridge.

I'd cover the electricity myself and offered it up for the team to use, at no charge, just kept the final say on its usage and upkeep to myself.

Within half an hour, green light—request granted.

Listed the old mini on eBay straight away and dipped into my emergency fund for a brand-spanking new double-door.

The next day was delivery day for the big guy.

Found a sweet spot for it right in the break room corner.

During installation, it turned into quite a spectacle.

Christine, puzzled, quizzed me, "Mia, after that Lisa fiasco, why spring for a bigger fridge?"

I just chuckled. "It's all about harmony, right? Step back to leap forward."

As I caught the curious glances, I took the floor:

"Listen up, everyone. I needed a spot for some personal health items, hence the new fridge. All paid out of my own pocket, including the power—it's all above board.

"You've probably caught wind of the mini-fridge drama. A few days back, Lisa asked to store her breast milk in it. She later claimed it malfunctioned, ruining the milk and supposedly sickening her kid enough for a hospital run.

"Her family hit me with the bill. Didn't think a good deed would stir up such a storm.

"Seeing how everyone struggles with their lunch setups, I figured a bigger fridge would help. Feel free to use it, if you'd like. Just hoping...,"

I paused, lips pursed, shoulders up in a helpless shrug.

Christine didn't miss a beat, "I'm signing up first. Been through too many lunch bags; they just don't cut it in this heat. You're offering this for free, after shelling out for the fridge? Can't thank you enough."

As she spoke, nods of agreement from the lunch crew.

My voice cracked a bit, eyes misty:

"We're all in this together, no need for formalities. Just to sidestep any potential hiccups, if you wanna store something, give me a heads-up online. Let's agree the fridge is strictly for clean, wholesome eats. I'm hands-off on whatever's stored inside."

Consensus reached in no time.

The fridge started filling up fast.

Some folks began bringing extra treats—fruits, ice creams, always tossing a bit my way.

Christine even snagged a small organizer just for my health bits.

Thanks to this new fridge, a new warmth buzzed among us.

The chill from the mini-fridge scandal slowly thawed.

Days later, Lisa clocked back in.

Turns out, her son's "severe" diarrhea? Not even hospital-worthy.

Her mother-in-law tried to hustle me for more dough, claiming the bills were short.

Asked her for a breakdown, she clammed up, so I clamped down—no cash without proof.

Lisa turned into the office broadcaster, lamenting about her son's drastic dehydration and vanished baby fat...

Throughout the day, she'd replay her tale, oblivious to everyone's polite disinterest.

Christine finally snapped, "Lisa, save the soap opera for after hours—we've got deadlines!"

Lisa scoffed and stalked off with her pump.

She hovered around the break room fridge, pacing back and forth.

I was pretty sure she saw the note I tacked on the fridge door.

It stated simply:

"Lisa Argal is prohibited from using this fridge."
