THE DEBATE OF HEARTS

8.6 / 10.0
Whitney and Darius Lakes are sworn rivals. She sees him as the rich kid who preaches change while clinging to his family legacy. He sees her as a relentless opponent who knows exactly where to strike. When Whitney challenges him mid-debate, asking if he's ever refused an opportunity born of privilege, the room falls silent. His smirk falters, revealing a nerve she never meant to expose. He calls it a personal attack; she calls it truth. Their clash isn't just intellectual—it's a dangerous pull neither can ignore. She calls him her nemesis. He's her unhealthy distraction. Together, they embark on a journey of love that neither expected.

THE DEBATE OF HEARTS Chapter 1

The lights above the huge Kendrick hall droned like a trapped swarm of bees. Whitney Bennett ignored them. Looking for anywhere to direct her focus, her eyes fell on her secondhand Oxfords on the polished floor. But it was easier to ignore the way her blazer, purchased from a thrift store and hemmed by hand, felt just a quarter size too big in the shoulders than it was to ignore the guy standing on the opposite side of the debate table, Darius Lakes.

Like a gravitational pull, her eyes were drawn back to him. Arms loose at his sides, a smirk playing on his lips. His blazer probably cost more than her monthly grocery budget. His shoes were pristine and scuff-less. Everything about him screamed, 'I belong here,' and nothing made Whitney's blood simmer more than that fact.

"Attention please, the debate is about to begin."

"Affirmative side: Whitney Bennett, first-year, Political Science," the moderator announced.

"Negative side: Darius Lakes, second-year, Economics and Public Policy."

The audience, comprising about eighty students, murmured. Whitney knew what they were thinking. Lakes is a legend. Lakes won regionals as a freshman. Lake's family name is on three buildings.

And Whitney?

She was just the scholarship girl who'd shown up to tryouts with her big spiral notebook and a bigger chip on her shoulder.

But she liked that chip. It kept her sharp.

The moderator read the resolution: "This house believes that meritocracy is a myth in modern higher education."

Whitney's heart did a little, happy flip. Perfect.

Darius went first. He always spoke first when he could. She had watched his past debates on YouTube at 2 a.m., scarfing down instant noodles, memorizing his habits. He liked to begin with a soft voice, draw the room in, then drop a hammer.

"Thank you," he said, and the room went quiet. "My opponent will most likely tell you that hard work pays off. That's the best rise to the top. She may say that if you just put in enough work, the system will reward you." He paused long enough for the words to hang. "She would be lying."

Whitney's jaw tightened. He's baiting me.

"Meritocracy is a comforting bedside story we tell poor kids so they don't riot. But let's examine this closely, take this very university, for instance. 63% of students come from the top 20% of income brackets. Legacy admissions. Donor preferences. Internships that go to the highly connected before applications are even open to the general public." Facing Whitney directly, he said, "so when someone like me stands here, someone who has had every advantage, I'll be the first to say: the game is rigged. And pretending otherwise is cruel."

A wave of applause resounded. Whitney did not clap. She waited until the noise faded, then stepped forward.

"Three minutes for cross-examination," the moderator said.

Darius raised an eyebrow. "Go ahead, Bennett."

Her face remained stoic. "You say the game is rigged. You say meritocracy is a myth. So why are you here, competing? Why not forfeit every round to someone 'more deserving'?"

Darius blinked, just once. But she caught it.

"Because," he said, recovering quickly and smoothly, acknowledging that a broken system doesn't mean you refuse to play. You work to change it from the inside out."

"From the inside," Whitney repeated. "How convenient of you to speak about changing it 'from the inside.' The rich kid gets to feel noble while keeping his spot. Tell me, Mr. Lakes, if your family legacy is such an unfair advantage, have you ever turned down a single opportunity that came to you because of this same legacy?"

The room went still.

Darius's smirk flickered. For a fraction of a second, something real flashed over his face, not anger, not embarrassment. Something sharper. Like she had touched a nerve he didn't know was exposed.

"That's not a debate question anymore," he said. "That's a personal attack."

"No," Whitney said, tilting her head. "That's me pointing out that you're using your guilt while still benefiting from it. You don't want to tear down the system. You want a better seat at the table so you can feel less bad about eating at the table."

The audience laughed, nervously but excitedly. Someone whistled.

Darius stepped closer. Close enough that Whitney could perceive his cologne. It smelled woody and expensive.

"You're good," he said quietly, for her ears alone. "But you are also wrong."

"Prove it," She whispered back.

The rebuttal round was a bloodbath. She was more than prepared for him.

Whitney dismantled his statistics. She had invested time fact-checking every source he had used in previous debates. She pointed out that his 'sixty-three percent' figure was outdated by two years and excluded graduate programs. She quoted a study showing that first-generation students who graduated from elite schools often earned less than their wealthy peers with identical GPAs.

"Because it is not about merit," she concluded, voice steady. It's about networks. About safety nets. About the ability to fail without losing everything. Mr. Lakes talks about changing the system from the inside, but he's never once been outside. He doesn't know what it means to have your scholarship hinge on a single grade. To choose between buying a textbook and eating dinner. To have your mother cry on the phone because she can't co-sign your loan.

Her voice cracked on the last word. She didn't care. Let them see it.

" So yes," Whitney said, "meritocracy is a myth. But not for the reasons he gave. It is a myth because we judge people by their outcomes without ever looking at their starting lines. And until we do that, until we stop pretending that a legacy student and scholarship student are playing the same game, every debate about 'fairness' is just rich people congratulating themselves for noticing the poor exist."

Total silence.

Then, from the back row, a single pair of hands clapped. Whitney's roommate grinning like a maniac.

More applause followed. Not thunderous but genuine. Surprised.

Darius didn't clap. He stood frozen, jaw set, eyes locked on Whitney like she was a puzzle he was trying to solve.

The moderator cleared his throat. "The winner, by a 4-3 decision... Whitney Bennett."

Kate hollered. Whitney exhaled.

She didn't look at Darius again. She gathered her notes, handwritten on recycled paper, because she couldn't afford a tablet and walked off the stage.

He caught her in the hallway.

"Bennett."

She kept walking.

"Whitney."

The use of her first name stopped her. She turned.

Darius had lost the smirk. His tie was loosened, his hair slightly disheveled from running his hands through it. Without the stage lighting, he looked younger. Almost human.

"You're wrong about one thing," he said.

"Which part?"

"You said I've never been outside." He shoved his hands into his pockets. "My grandfather was a janitor. He cleaned these same halls for thirty years. My Dad got a full scholarship to this school. Became a lawyer. Married a senator's daughter." He shrugged. "I grew up with money. But I also grew up hearing that I would never be as good as him. That I was riding on a name that I didn't earn.

Whitney studied his face. Looking for the lie. She didn't find one.

"So what?" she said. "You want a pity party?"

"No." He stepped closer. "I want a rematch."

"Sorry, the season's over."

"Not the season." He paused. "Nationals. They are picking partners next week. Two-person teams."

Whitney's stomach dropped. "You want to partner with me? We just spent forty trying to destroy each other."

"Exactly," his mouth curved, not a smirk, almost a real smile. "Imagine what we'd do to someone else."

She should say no. She walks away and never looks back. But his eyes were serious. And somewhere, deep in her competitive gut, a voice whispered: He's right.

"I'll think about it," She said.

"That's not a no."

It's not a yes either."

Darius nodded, turned, and walked down the dim hallway. At the far end, just before the exit, he paused.

"Bennett?"

"What?"

"You left this." He tossed something her way. She caught it-a pen. A nice one too. Metal, heavy, probably worth twenty bucks. "You dropped it during your closing argument. Thought you might need it for the next round."

Then he was gone.

Whitney stared at the pen. On the barrel, engraved in tiny letters: D.L.

She should throw it away.

She didn't.
