The Day My Son Chose Another Mother Chapter 1

Seven months into my pregnancy, I happened to overhear a conversation between the husband who shared my bed and the penniless girl my Family had taken in off the street.

"Salvatore, if your wife ever learns the child in her belly came from our blood and not hers, she might be angry enough to put a bullet in her own head. Don't you think?" Lucia said, and let a soft laugh slip out.

"Better for everyone if she did. Then every inch of Falcone territory passes to me." Salvatore's voice was flat as cold marble. "The only trouble is if she renounces me before witnesses and casts me out. That's why this stays buried under omertà. Once our boy inherits the whole empire, we'll deliver her the kind of blow she won't walk away from."

That night, I pretended I had heard nothing at all. I carried the child to term and raised him with my own hands, sparing him nothing.

Twenty-four years later, after my son came home from his schooling abroad, I signed over every front, every holding, every laundered coin of the Falcone coffers into his name.

At a public sit-down before the assembled families, Lucia, the beggar girl I had once sheltered, came forward on my husband's arm with a maternity report clutched in her fingers. She walked straight to where I stood and declared, "Matteo is my blood. You've stolen him from me all these years. It's time you gave him back."

My son threw a formal renunciation in my face, his words cold and without mercy. "Sign the papers and let my father go, so the three of us can finally be a family. Out of respect for the fact that you carried me and raised me, I'll see you're sent two hundred dollars a month."

I smirked, faint and quiet, and answered, "Alright."

...

"Wife, didn't you have a sit-down at the club today? Why are you still shut up in the study?" Salvatore came in carrying a cup of warm milk, setting it down before me with great care, his voice tender as it had always been.

I closed the laptop and smiled up at him. "Matteo's tutor mentioned the boy's been coughing. I've arranged for the finest pediatric man in the city to see him tomorrow."

Touched, Salvatore stroked my hair. "You worry yourself sick the moment Matteo so much as sneezes. When he's grown, he'll repay you with a son's devotion. You'll see."

I looked at him and said, plain as anything, "Of course. I'm his mother. If I don't look after him, who will?"

Moved, Salvatore smiled, warm and easy. "You're remarkable. Marrying you, raising a boy beside you. It's the greatest blessing of my life." His palm came to rest on his tie and smoothed it flat, once, the way it always did.

I held his gaze, those eyes brimming with affection, and offered him a faint smile without a word.

Salvatore and I had been bound to each other for ten years. Three of courtship, seven sworn as man and wife.

In that decade he had tended me when I was ill or worn thin, surprised me when I least expected it, and held me close in the dark, whispering that he would love me until the grave.

Had I never overheard that conversation, I would never have believed that the man who claimed to love me so deeply could betray me like this.

"Aunt Lucia, you came!" Matteo's delighted voice rang out from the front room.

I rose at once and stepped out of the study, only to find Lucia coming through the door. She swept my son up into her arms with no effort at all and pressed a teasing kiss to his cheek.

"Baby Matteo, did you miss me?" As she spoke, her eyes found me. The smile froze on her mouth, her face caught for a moment in something it hadn't meant to show.

Before she could find her tongue, Salvatore moved in quickly to smooth it over. "Wife, the boy's school had one of those parent outings today. I figured you'd be tied up with Family business, so I didn't trouble you. I asked Lucia to step in."

Lucia set Matteo down and rushed to fill the silence, her voice climbing high and nervous. "Yes, yes, Adriana. You've kept me under your protection all these years. I've never forgotten the debt. The moment Salvatore called, I came straight over." She bit down on the inside of her cheek, and the smile she forced stretched a fraction wider than it should have.

Watching her scramble to bury the guilt under sweetness, I couldn't help but remember the day my son was born. Lucia had come to the hospital then too, on Salvatore's arm, under the pretext of greeting the baby, standing close by his side while I bore the labor alone.
