The Daughter They Chose to Abandon

I was kidnapped at two years old, and my parents searched for me for eight long years.

When they finally found me, I was working in the fields—thin, in rags, covered in scars from countless beatings.

I could see the disappointment in their eyes. I wasn’t the child they wanted back, not the polished, presentable daughter they had imagined. So I worked harder than anyone else, determined to earn money, to prove my worth.

By twenty, I had a stable job and a well-off boyfriend. We were already talking about marriage.

But one evening, I carried dishes into the banquet hall and froze at the doorway. My father’s voice rang out, clear as a knife to my chest:

“Mira’s education is poor, and she won’t have much of a future. Verena is different—young, beautiful, with a degree from a prestigious university. She’s a better match for you.”

My mother was glowing with pride.

“They’re a perfect pair. A match made in heaven.”

I turned just in time to see my boyfriend kneel on one knee, the ring he once gave me now being slid onto Verena’s hand.

Applause erupted. My parents’ faces lit with joy. My heart froze.

Barely able to breathe, I shoved the dish into a colleague’s hands and fled the hotel.

That night, my parents came home late, still laughing, still celebrating. When I opened the door, I set a bank card down on the table.

“For the past two years, I’ve been giving you 1,500 dollars every month as pension money. Now that Verena’s back, you don’t need me anymore. Return the rest.”

Their smiles vanished.

“What nonsense are you talking about? Verena is your sister. She hasn’t even finished her internship—how can she support us?”

My father slammed the table. “We raised you for ten years! Food, shelter—was that free? Now you dare demand money back? You ungrateful brat!”

I held his gaze.

“I never went to school during those ten years. You only brought me home to feed and house me. Deduct those costs—return the balance.”

He lunged at me, cursing.

“Miranda, how dare you! I’m your father!”

I laughed, though tears blurred my vision.

“And where’s Verena? Not back yet? Let me guess—she’s at the hotel with my ex, deepening their ‘relationship.’”

My mother’s face went pale. She tried to cover it up, then sighed and sat down.

“Since you already know, there’s no point hiding it. Nick’s family is wealthy. His parents are retired cadres. You’re not good enough for him. Even if you married him, you couldn’t keep him. Better he goes to your sister than let an outsider take him.”
