The Dashcam Didn't Lie My Aunt's Betrayal Exposed Chapter 1

When winter break began, my aunt Willow Chavez convinced me to refund my high-speed rail ticket. She insisted I catch a ride home with her and my uncle Victor Finch instead.

"Money's hard to earn these days," she lectured. "A penny saved is a penny earned. Besides, the car's much faster."

I believed her. That mistake cost me eighteen hours stuck in highway gridlock.

Exhausted and stiff, we finally pulled up to my house. Before I could unbuckle my seatbelt, Willow turned around, held out her hand, and demanded one thousand dollars.

I stared at her. "Aunt Willow, I thought you were just giving me a lift?"

Her expression shifted to righteous indignation. "It is a lift—I never said I wouldn't charge you!"

She gestured wildly. "Look at this trip! Gas, tolls—everything costs money! And at the service area, didn't I buy you a fried skewer? A thousand dollars is practically a steal!"

I scoffed.

My rail ticket had cost just over two hundred. Even with a taxi for the remaining distance, the total wouldn't have touched three hundred.

In the driver's seat, Victor gripped the wheel, fingers tapping impatiently. "Hurry up."

Trapped and exhausted, I transferred the money. Only then did the locks click open.

Inside my house, the adrenaline faded. Rage crept in to replace it.

I grabbed my phone and called Grandma Finch.

"Grandma." I took a shaky breath. "I don't think I can visit for New Year."

——

Her voice pitched up. "What's wrong, Ella? What happened?"

A lump formed in my throat. "It's nothing. Money's just tight. I can't afford gifts for everyone, and I'm too embarrassed to show up empty-handed."

"Nonsense!" she cut in. "You coming home is the gift. Who asked you to buy anything?" Her tone dropped. "Tell me the truth—did someone mistreat you?"

Under her relentless questioning, my resolve crumbled. I told her everything.

Silence stretched for several seconds. Then she exploded.

"Outrageous! Those two bastards!"

Her voice softened immediately. "Don't be sad, sweetie. Grandma knows now. I will get that money back for you."

"It's not about the money," she huffed. "It's the principle! No logic in this world justifies what they did. When you come home, Grandma will have a big red envelope waiting."

After hanging up, the weight in my chest lightened slightly.

I dragged my suitcase into the living room. My parents, Logan and Jessica Dickerson, were already waiting, their faces lighting up the moment they saw me.

Dad took my suitcase. Mom grabbed my hand, her gaze sweeping over me. "Baby, you must be exhausted after sitting in that car for so long." She shook her head. "Your uncle really is something—insisting on the car when the train's so much faster."

I forced a weak smile. "Mom, I'm not tired. It just... hurts."

They both froze.

Mom leaned in, brow furrowed. "What's wrong? Carsick? Do you feel sick somewhere?"

I shook my head and met their eyes.

"When I got out of the car, Aunt Willow demanded a thousand dollars for the fare." I paused. "The scholarship money I saved all year... I had to give almost all of it to her."

Silence.

"What?" Dad's brows knotted. "A thousand dollars? For a carpool? That's... are you sure you heard right?"

Mom's face darkened instantly.

"Victor wouldn't have the guts to do this alone," she snapped. "It's that woman."

She turned to Dad, eyes flashing. "I told you years ago—when Willow married into this family, the only thing she ever recognized was money."

Her fists clenched. "To scheme against her own niece over a simple ride... she really has some nerve."
