Chapter 3

Five years ago, I joined a wilderness adventure club. It was there that I first met Evan.

On one of the trips, as a result of my lackluster stamina, I ended up trailing behind the group. Evan had been gentlemanly enough to hang back and keep pace behind me. However, we ended up missing the trail marks left by the group leader and getting lost in the forest.

Unused to the terrain, I slipped and fell into a deep pit.

When I regained consciousness, I was lying on the ground with a bag as a pillow. As I tried to move, I felt an excruciating pain coming from my calf.

"Don't move. You broke a bone in your calf. I had to set it temporarily with a splinter," Evan said.

The pit was made up entirely of slippery rocks. Since Evan's arm was injured, he couldn't carry me out either. We had to wait to be rescued.

The weather in the forest was extremely unpredictable. Just moments ago, it was sunny, but it started raining within minutes. Evan made many attempts to start a fire, to no avail.

As night fell, the temperature dipped. I couldn't stop myself from shivering. Right then, Evan huddled closer and took his jacket off before draping it on top of me, saying softly, "Lyra."

Being the gentleman he was, he widened his arms slightly and sought my permission. Cheeks flushing, I leaned against him. We held each other close, relying on each other's body warmth to get through this gruelling night.

The next day, a rescue team saved us. I was left with an eight-inch scar along my calf, but thankfully, Evan had treated my injury in time. I could still walk perfectly fine.

Back in the autopsy room, Evan stroked my scar and said, "The victim has an old scar on her right leg. Due to the distinctiveness of the scar, it can be used to identify the victim."

Then, he looked away.

Back then, after Evan held me the entire night, my love for him grew until it could grow no more. We were in love soon after that.

Alas, even though only five years had passed since then, he seemed to have forgotten everything.

After making a full record of the external injuries, Evan picked up the scalpel and made his first incision.

"Hm?"

Staring at where my kidneys were supposed to be, Evan let out a puzzled hum.

Evan and I dated for three years without ever fighting once before we decided to get married. However, just before our wedding, I found out that I was suffering from kidney failure.

Not wanting to burden Evan, I asked for a breakup. Evan begged me to reconsider. It was the first time I'd ever seen him cry, but despite that, I closed the door in his face.

As I waited in despair for my time to die, the doctor told me a suitable donor had been found and that I could get the surgery done immediately.

When I was wheeled into the surgical theater, I found that Evan had been wheeled in as well. He had secretly checked to see if he was a suitable donor, and once he found out he was, he became determined to donate a kidney to me.

Sobbing hard, I tried to refuse to go through with the surgery, but Evan came over and gave me a kiss, saying, "Compared to losing a kidney, I think my future would be even more pitiful if I lost a beautiful wife."

The surgery was a success, and the wedding proceeded as planned. I thought my relationship with Evan was even more intimate than that of normal married couples. My love for him didn't fade with marriage either. It only intensified.

Thus, in spite of the way he had been treating me recently, I would still think fondly of our loving past and fool myself into thinking he would come back to me.

Evan broke me out of my reverie by looking up and saying to the police officers on the side, "The victim is missing both her kidneys."

Eyes widening in disbelief, I dashed over to the autopsy table and checked on my mutilated body. Where my kidneys once were, there were only two bloody holes left.

After the surgery, I was able to stay alive with the kidney Evan gave me. That was evidence of his love for me. Why did those men take my kidney away after killing me?

Following a quick analysis, Evan continued with the autopsy. He still hadn't discovered my identity yet, but it wasn't something I could dwell on right now. He was about to open up my abdomen.

Once he cut open my womb, he would find the other secret I'd been keeping—the one I planned on telling him on our wedding anniversary.

Chapter 4

Just then, there was a knock on the door to the autopsy room, and Evan looked up with a frown. I knew he hated it whenever someone disrupted him at work.

However, when he saw who it was, his frown disappeared. He had a doting smile on his face as he called out gently, "Why are you here, Carmen? I'm still in the middle of work."

Carmen glanced at my body on the autopsy table before looking away. Lifting the bags of food she was holding, she said with a smile, "No one wants to work overtime while hungry, right? I brought supper for everyone."

Evan nodded at the others in the room, and they immediately cheered as they exited the autopsy room. While making his way toward the pizzas Carmen had brought, Isaac Sorrell, the intern, couldn't resist remarking, "Your wife is so thoughtful, Dr. Foster!"

Shaun quickly covered Isaac's mouth to stop him from talking, but Evan heard the comment anyway. After a glance at Carmen, his expression hardened, and he growled, "Don't ever bring up that woman in front of me again. I've been working overtime at the police station for three days now, and she didn't even bother calling me. She's not fit to be my wife."

I stood behind Evan with a look of bitterness.

Previously, I'd also brought supper to Evan when he had to work late. However, he berated me for disturbing him at work and threw the supper I'd brought into the trash, right in front of everyone. He'd also gotten the police officers to chase me out.

Now, after seeing the doting look Evan gave Carmen, it all made sense to me. This was the difference love made.

Evan's colleagues started digging into the food, and the atmosphere grew lively. Shaun came to hand Evan a slice of pizza, but just as he was about to take it, Carmen stopped him and stuffed a lunchbox into his hand.

"This is your supper, Evan. It has less salt and less oil, which is good for your kidney."

Everyone began teasing Evan, saying that Carmen had lovingly prepared a separate supper just for him. Although he hated such teasing, he didn't tell them to stop. In fact, he gave everyone a smug smile as if he relished the attention.

After sharing a loving supper, Carmen packed up the empty lunchbox and left, while Evan went back to the autopsy room.

Once again, he took his scalpel. My womb was cut open, and from it, he retrieved a newly formed fetus. He replaced it on an autopsy tray.

This was my first time seeing my child.

Since the day we got married, I'd wanted to give Evan a child, but he kept refusing to have one.

Three months ago, I tricked Evan into coming home. After getting him drunk, I climbed on top of him. That was how I managed to get pregnant.

Alas, I would never be able to hear the baby calling me mommy.

After completing the autopsy, Evan drew a conclusion.

I'd been abused for over ten hours before getting killed by having my throat slit. Then, my head was chopped off, and my body became a dog's chew toy.

Due to the missing kidneys, Evan assumed the perpetrators belonged to an organ trafficking ring.

The police were running a DNA test on the fetus in an attempt to locate the father. Evan took his gloves off and decided to head home to await the results.

He didn't return to our home, however, and neither did he go back to his assigned dormitory. Instead, he went to an apartment near the police station. When he opened the door, he was greeted by the sight of Carmen sitting on the couch, reading a book.

Once she saw Evan, she held her arms open. Her voluptuous body was slightly visible beneath her sheer nightgown.

Evan walked over to the couch and hugged her. He took a deep breath as he rested his head against her nape.

"How did the autopsy go?"

"The victim was a pitiful young woman. According to our preliminary findings, we suspect it's the work of an organ trafficking ring."

Evan couldn't see Carmen's reaction, but as I was standing behind him, I could.

When she heard Evan say that the perpetrators were suspected to be from an organ trafficking ring, she raised a brow and had a strange smirk on her face.

Out of the blue, I recalled something I'd forgotten. While I'd been tied to the bed and assaulted, someone masked from the nose up flashed that very same smile at me as I screamed and struggled.

Before leaving, she'd adjusted the camera to make sure it faced me before saying to the men, "Lyra here likes it rough. You don't need to hold yourselves back with her."

The guys became even rougher with me. It was as if they were in a frenzied trance.

Once I remembered this, I shrieked in fury and lunged at Carmen, but I simply passed right through her. My anger had no effect on her.

Carmen had leaned in close to Evan's neck to kiss him, but just then, his phone rang. That put an end to their steamy moment.

Evan had no choice but to take the call, which was from my younger brother, Dean Harding.

"Where's Lyra?" Dean demanded.

Dean had never liked Evan. After finding out that Evan and I had basically been living separately, his attitude toward Evan became even harsher.

"How should I know where your sister has run off to? Relax. If she's dead, the police would've asked me to come in and identify her body," Evan retorted indifferently while fondling Carmen's hand.

"Get lost! Lyra's pregnant! Where would she have gone? I haven't been able to get in touch with her for three days now. If anything happens to her, I'll make you pay for it!" Dean roared before dropping the call.

Evan was perplexed, but the fact that Dean said I was pregnant caught his attention.

Claiming that he wanted to shower, Evan excused himself to the bathroom and gave me a call. It went unanswered, so he left me a voice message.

I was standing right beside him, but he was never going to get a response from me.

In the middle of the night, Evan's phone rang. He was being summoned back to the police station as they'd gotten the DNA results back.

Evan gave Carmen a kiss on the forehead before changing into his clothes and rushing off.

As soon as he entered the autopsy room, he saw the box with the fetus on the autopsy table, along with a report.

"We've got the DNA results back?" he asked.

Shaun hesitated as if he didn't know how to answer. He stared at Evan with a complicated look in his eye.

"We took a sample of the fetus' DNA and compared it to our DNA database…"

Still standing beside Evan, I covered my mouth. I was so nervous that I could almost feel as though my heart would leap out of my body.

Evan wasn't faring too well either. He'd turned pale as the uneasy feeling he had intensified.

"Who is the father?" he questioned shakily.

With great difficulty, Shaun replied, "The father is…"
