The Crown Had My Name, But His Hands Held It Chapter 1

I was in the middle of a sit-down over the wire, three of the Family's silent partners staring back at me through the screen, when the group chat from my old ward, dead for the better part of a decade, detonated all at once.

Adriana, did you see Bianca's post? She's getting married today! Are you really not coming?

The messages came fast, one after another, and through the noise I pieced it together. Bianca Ferraro, the crowned beauty of our circle, the girl every associate's son had chased, was tying the knot today. And every one of them, all our old associates from the same ward, was gathering to watch her do it.

I kept my reply cold and clean, the way you answer anyone you don't owe an explanation. Sorry. I've got matters that can't wait.

The responses came back swift and cruel, the way a pack turns the moment it smells weakness.

What could you possibly have going on? Someone who's stayed invisible for a hundred years must be doing pretty poorly.

Just admit you're ashamed and stop pretending you're too busy for us.

Then Bianca herself, gliding in like she owned the floor. Remember our bet? I always swore I'd marry a bigger man than you ever could.

Can't say I recall it, I typed back.

They swarmed at once, hungry for the pile-on.

Bianca's husband runs a whole operation of his own, the acting Boss of a real outfit. He sent a full column of luxury cars just to bring her to the ceremony today.

Sounds like you're sweating how your little life stacks up against hers, so you're pretending your memory's gone.

Maybe she's so broke she can't even scrape together a wedding gift. Why don't we pass a hat around the ward and help her chip in?

Under the weight of it, Bianca tagged me again, dressing her contempt up as grace.

I truly hope you'll come witness my happiness. We came up together, after all, so I'll have my husband find you some cleaning work to keep you fed.

And with that she posted the photograph. The two of them in their wedding finery, radiant, staged, framed like a portrait of everything I was supposed to envy.

My breath stopped in my throat when I saw the man beside her.

That was Vince Marchetti. My husband. The nobody from the outer wards who had married into my blood and paraded himself as though the crown were his by right.

Sure, I wrote back, and I watched my own fingers tremble against the glass. I'll definitely come to witness your happiness.

……

The instant the message left my hand, the phone buzzed again, and there was his name, sitting in my messages like a snake curled comfortable in the sun.

Hey, tesoro. Heading out to my parents' place in the old country today. I already fixed you dinner and left it in the fridge. Just warm it through whenever you're hungry.

Love you always.

Vince had moved into my house three years ago. Three years of looking out for me, of handling every small thing before I could ask. Three years of a man who, even when he walked out the door, never forgot to leave something warm behind for me. There had been a time when those little gestures softened me, when I let myself believe a man could be that gentle without a price attached. Now, reading the words with his other life smiling up at me from the photo above them, all I felt was the cold, absurd weight of how thoroughly a person could be played inside their own home.

I cut the call without a word of farewell to the men on the screen, and I drove.

The address Bianca had flaunted in the chat sat on the edge of a neighborhood that reached above its station, the kind of place a minor associate family buys into to look bigger than the blood behind it. As I turned onto the street, I saw it strung across the front of the house, a banner the color of arterial red, the letters swollen with borrowed pride.

A warm welcome to Mr. Marchetti, acting Boss of the Castellano Syndicate, to his wedding.

My own name. My father's name. My blood's empire, hung over a stranger's door like a stolen coat, and my husband's face grinning underneath it.

My hand rose on its own and closed around the pendant at my throat, holding it the way you hold the last true thing in a room full of lies.
