The Choice I Made Chapter 1

The low hum of laughter and clinking glasses filled the elegant restaurant as I stood frozen near the entrance. My heart pounded in my chest, and a dull ache spread through my body as my gaze landed on Kyle. My Kyle—or so I had thought—sat at a candlelit table, leaning in close to his secretary, Jane. Her hand rested on his forearm, her laugh high-pitched and sweet as if she hadn’t just stolen someone else’s future.

I felt numb. The weight of the truth crushed me, but it wasn’t as if I didn’t already know. I’m not stupid. I’ve seen the lingering glances, the missed phone calls, the way he started to smile less when it was just the two of us. It didn’t take a genius to connect the dots. Still, seeing them here, celebrating her birthday, made my stomach churn in disgust.

Kyle’s hand reached into his pocket, and I watched in muted horror as he presented her with a small velvet box. A necklace. My breath hitched as I recognized the design—it was the same one I had admired months ago but dismissed as impractical. He had remembered my fleeting interest but given it to her.

A bitter chuckle escaped my lips before I could stop it. My head spun, and suddenly, tears spilled from my eyes. Hot and uncontrollable, they streaked down my face despite my desperate attempts to hold them back. He couldn’t even remember that I was allergic to cream and fed it to me on my own birthday, leaving me suffering silently just so he wouldn’t feel embarrassed in front of our friends. And yet, here he was, treating Jane like royalty.

The room began to blur as my tears clouded my vision. I couldn’t stay there. My knees wobbled as I turned, desperate to escape before I completely broke down. But as I took a step, I collided with someone.

“Ah, I’m sorry—” I began, ready to push away from the stranger, but his arms wrapped around me gently.

“Just cry,” he said softly, his voice steady and warm.

I didn’t know him, and I didn’t care. Something about his presence made it impossible to resist. The dam broke, and I sobbed into his chest, my hands gripping the front of his coat as I poured out all the anguish I had been holding in for years. His embrace was firm but nonjudgmental, as if he knew I needed this more than words.

Minutes passed—maybe hours; I couldn’t tell—until I felt utterly drained. My tears dried up, leaving only an empty hollowness in their wake. I realized then that I was still clinging to a stranger. Mortified, I quickly pulled away, wiping at my tear-streaked face.

“I—I’m so sorry,” I stammered, unable to meet his gaze. “I didn’t mean to—”

“Don’t apologize,” he said simply, offering a kind smile before stepping back.

I nodded, muttered another apology, and rushed out of the restaurant, my cheeks burning with embarrassment. Outside, the cold night air bit at my skin, but it did little to cool the fire of shame and heartache within me.

As I walked aimlessly, my phone buzzed in my purse. I fumbled for it and saw my mother’s name on the screen. A sigh escaped my lips as I answered.

“Hi, Mom,” I said, my voice still hoarse from crying.

“Katheryn, sweetheart, have you thought about what I said?” Her tone was gentle but insistent, just like it had been every other time we spoke these past few weeks. “Kyle’s made you wait eight years. Eight! And he’s never even visited us. Doesn’t that tell you something?”

Her words stung because they were true. Kyle had promised so many things over the years, but none of them ever came to fruition. Even now, he couldn’t give me the decency of loyalty.

“I saw him tonight,” I admitted quietly, my voice shaking. “With someone.”

“Oh, honey…” My mother sighed, a mix of sadness and relief. “It’s time to move on. You deserve better than this. Let me help you.”

Her words hung in the air, and I knew what she meant. She’d been pushing for me to end things with Kyle and consider the marriage proposal she’d arranged. For weeks, I had resisted, clinging to the remnants of a relationship that had died long ago. But tonight, seeing him with Jane, I realized how much I had lost of myself trying to keep him.

“Okay,” I said finally, my voice steadier than I expected. “You’re right, Mom. It’s over.”

My mother’s delighted gasp was like a salve on my wounded heart. “I’ll handle everything. I’ve already found the perfect dress for you.”

I couldn’t help but smile faintly at her excitement. “Choose whatever you like, Mom. I trust you.”

As I ended the call, a strange sense of calm washed over me. Letting Kyle go wouldn’t be easy, but I think choosing myself and my happiness is something that I should do because in the end if I end up being unhappy is the consequence of my action.

“Kyle, I think… I'm ready to let you go.”
