The Chance Is Over Chapter 1

"James!!!" I screamed as I saw James stumble down the stairs. I stood frozen as I watched three-year-old James' tiny body roll down the stairs.

I quickly ran down the stairs to check on him. When I reached the bottom of the stairs, I saw Adam holding James, who was bleeding from the head.

I saw James whisper something to Adam and his face immediately changed. I saw an angry look directed at me that made my heart sink. He had never given me that look in our ten years of marriage, not even when we found out I was infertile.

Adam quickly picked James up and left the house. The hospital. That's what I thought. I hurried to catch up. When I got outside, I couldn't find Adam's car.

I jumped into my car and drove quickly to the hospital we used to go to. The thirty-minute drive left me numb. I had completely neglected James, the baby I had been raising for the past three years.

As soon as I arrived at the hospital, I rushed to the emergency room. I saw Adam pacing back and forth. I approached him and asked him how James was doing. Adam just negatively shook his head.

"We need to do a blood transfusion. But there is no AB-negative blood available. Do you know anyone who has it?" a nurse said as she left the room.

"Adam, you have it. You can give it, right?" I said. Adam just shook his head in the negative, so the nurse left us to find a donor and contact another hospital.

"Why can't you, Adam? Why, don't you love James? He's our son, even if he's not our flesh and blood." I saw Adam look down after I finished my words.

"I'm sorry I'm his biological father. I can’t be a donor for him."

Adam's words stopped my world. Lost in my own words. The man who loved me betrayed me more than three years ago. I was raising a baby boy who was my husband's biological child.

"Agatha, listen to me. I didn't mean to cheat on you. James was born by mistake one night. I didn't even know he existed until a few days before I brought him into our house." I didn't believe his words.

"You have to believe me. After I took James in, I never had anything to do with that woman. You have to believe me." I still looked at him skeptically for his explanation.

"I promise, you are the only one in my heart. You're the only one I love. You know how much I love you. I will never intentionally disappoint you." Adam finished his words took my hand and kissed it. He tried to calm me down.

"We better pray for James' safety," I said trying to distract Adam.

I was worried about James because I considered him to be my son. I didn't want anything bad to happen to him. The doctor left the room and told us to follow him. We followed the doctor into the room.

"James is doing quite well. He needs a blood transfusion because he has lost a lot of blood from his head wound. We have sewn up the wound. The bandages must be changed daily and kept out of the water. You can come back next week to open the stitches. After the transfusion, James will be able to go home," the doctor explained.

We both nodded and thanked him before leaving the room. We walked into the room where James was. I felt sad to see the three-year-old boy lying weakly with a bandage on his head.

"Agatha, you better go home first. I'll wait for him. The transfusion will take about three hours. When it's done, I'll take him home." I just nodded, trying to process all of this.

I walked down the hospital hallway to the parking lot with uncertain thoughts. I saw Caroline, Adam's secretary, entering the hospital. I stopped and watched her. I had been suspicious of her for a long time. She seemed very fond of my husband and tried to take every opportunity to get close to him. I saw her go in the direction from which I had come.

I followed her, keeping my distance. It was true what I thought. She was coming to see my husband. I peeked through the crack in James' room door and tried to listen to the conversation that was about to take place.

"Babe. How's James?" she asked.

"He's fine."

"I never should have let you take James to Agatha to be cared for. Look at my little boy, injured now. He could even die because of her carelessness," Caroline said.

My heart stopped. My head was spinning from the fact that Caroline was James' mother. The woman Adam was having an affair with. How could Adam lie to me? He said he was no longer in contact with James' biological mother.

"It wasn't all her fault. James said he ran away. But it's still Agatha's fault because she didn't stop him." I heard Adam defend for me.

"It's better to give James back to me. I will take care of him full-time. Let me keep him safe. There is nothing better than the love of a biological mother." Caroline put her arm around Adam's neck while she said that.

"I can't, Carry. Agatha already knows that James is my biological son," Adam refused. Maybe he had a little conscience about me.

"You can take me in. You can tell her I'll be your personal assistant and nanny for James. Besides, we can spend more time together." I saw Caroline's hand rubbing Adam's chest. I held back my tears when Adam didn't say no to her.

"Alright. Starting tomorrow, you will live in my house." My heart broke when I heard his agreement. Caroline looked happy and immediately pulled Adam into a passionate kiss.

I really couldn't hold back my tears. I immediately left the hospital with quick steps. Isn't life cruel?
