Elara Thorne POV:
I settled the man into the guest suite attached to my own, a spacious room with a balcony overlooking the gardens. “Stay here and don’t wander,” I ordered, my tone more Alpha than I intended. “The less people see of you for now, the better.”
A ghost of a smile played on his lips as he watched me. “Yes, ma’am,” he murmured, the slight amusement in his stormy eyes making my cheeks flush.
A call came through from Dr. Alistair. When I took him to the doctor just now, I learned that the man's name was Kael. Dr. Alistair spoke in a low, confidential tone, confirming that Kael’s body bore no pack markings. He was, for all intents and purposes, a true Rogue. The news solidified my cover story, but it didn’t quell the mystery surrounding him.
Just then, my satellite phone buzzed with a new message from Nina. It was a file. I opened it to find a scanned copy of a hospital report. Lyra Thorne. Patient confirmed pregnant.
I stared at the black and white text, feeling… nothing. A vast, empty numbness where a heart should be. Any lingering connection I felt to Zane, any faint echo of the Fated Mates bond, was severed by that clinical report. It was just… business now.
The door to my suite was thrown open without a knock. My adoptive mother, Eleonora, swept in, Lyra trailing behind her like a smug shadow.
Eleonora’s eyes landed on Kael, who stood silently by the balcony door. Her face twisted in disgust. “Elara! Have you no shame? Bringing a strange man, a filthy Rogue, into your private rooms?”
Lyra stepped forward, one hand placed protectively over her flat stomach. The gesture was pure theater. “Sister,” she said, her voice dripping with false concern. “Zane and I are going to have a child. A true heir for this pack. You’re damaged goods, wolf-less. The best thing you can do is bless our union.”
The humiliation was a physical thing, a sour taste in my mouth. Eleonora nodded in agreement, her gaze cold. “Lyra is right. For the good of the family, you must dissolve your betrothal to Zane. It is your Alpha’s wish.”
I lowered my gaze, letting my silver-blonde hair fall like a curtain to hide the ice in my eyes. I made my voice tremble. “I… I need to think about it.”
My apparent weakness was like blood in the water. Lyra’s smirk widened. She sauntered over to Kael, circling him like he was a piece of livestock at auction.
“Is this your new pet?” she sneered, her eyes raking over him with contempt. “He stinks of the wild. Your standards have really fallen, sister.”
I saw Kael’s jaw tighten, a flicker of raw violence in his eyes before he expertly masked it, sinking into the role of a submissive, unassuming stray.
Eleonora pulled a folded document from her pocket and threw it on the floor at my feet. “This is the annulment agreement and a full transfer of your assets. Sign it.”
I bent down, my fingers fumbling for the papers as if I couldn’t see them. My mind was a cold, calculating machine. They were so eager, so sure of their victory. As I reached for the document, I deliberately knocked over a glass of water on the end table. It spilled across the papers, soaking the ink.
“Oh, no!” I cried, my voice full of fake panic. “I’m so sorry! I couldn’t see…”
Lyra looked like she was about to strike me. Eleonora grabbed her arm. “Forget it,” she snapped, her patience gone. “Just have it signed before the Alpha’s birthday party. Or else.”
They stormed out, leaving a trail of smug satisfaction in their wake.
The moment the door closed, Kael was at my side, helping me to my feet. “Why do you let them treat you like that?” he asked, his voice a low growl. “Why didn't you fight back?”
I straightened up, and the mask of the fragile, blind girl fell away. My face was a cold, hard mask of fury. “Fighting back now only warns them,” I said, my voice like chips of ice. “I’m going to let them have their moment. I want them to be standing at the very peak of their triumph when I drag them down to hell.”
I looked at Kael, my mind already spinning with a new plan. “I need you to do something for me. At the birthday party, in front of everyone, I need you to propose to me.”
He stared at me, his stormy eyes wide with surprise.
“Zane and Lyra want to announce their union and my dispossession,” I explained, the plan forming as I spoke. “But I’m going to beat them to it. I will announce that I have found a new mate, and on those grounds, I am the one rejecting Zane. I will make him the one who was publicly cast aside.”
In our world, there was no greater shame for an Alpha male than to be publicly rejected by his mate. It was a wound to his pride, his very essence.
A slow, dangerous smile spread across Kael’s face. He looked at me, at the burning fire of vengeance in my eyes. “As you wish.”
I turned to the window, a strange exhaustion settling over me. The last thread connecting me to this family, to my past, had just been severed. *From now on,* I told my wolf, *we live for ourselves.*
*We live for us,* she answered, her voice a promise of blood and retribution.
Behind me, I could feel Kael’s steady gaze. He knew it too. The sleeping lioness was finally, irrevocably, awake.
Elara Thorne POV:
In the two days leading up to the party, I made a point of being seen. I walked the Packhouse grounds, my white cane tapping a steady rhythm on the stone paths, with Kael always a half-step behind me. He was my silent, brooding shadow, a tangible warning to anyone who might approach. We were a spectacle, the pack’s disgraced daughter and her mysterious Rogue companion.
We were near the training grounds when a familiar, arrogant voice cut through the air. Zane. He was sparring with some of the pack warriors, sweat glistening on his bare chest. The moment he saw us, his face darkened with possessive fury.
He strode over, blocking our path. “Elara, get away from this stray,” he commanded, his eyes fixed on Kael with pure hatred.
I turned my head toward the sound of his voice, my expression one of vacant confusion. “Zane? I can’t walk by myself. Kael is helping me.”
Lyra, never far behind, scurried to Zane’s side, linking her arm through his. She shot me a look of pure, venomous triumph. “He’s just worried about you, sister. After all, you’re about to be an outcast. A nobody.”
That was it. The final straw.
Slowly, deliberately, I closed my cane and tucked it under my arm. I lifted my head and looked directly at Zane. My vision was crystal clear, and the shock on his face was exquisitely satisfying.
“Your… your eyes,” he stammered, taking an involuntary step back.
A cold, sharp smile curved my lips. “Betrayal is a powerful cure, it seems. You should try it sometime.” I then turned my gaze to Kael, my voice ringing with a strength no one in this pack had ever heard from me. “And my wolf is back, too.”
A wave of energy, the pure, undiluted power of my Alpha bloodline, rolled off me. It was still young, untamed, but it was potent. Zane’s face went pale. A restored Elara was a threat; a blind, wolf-less Elara had been a pawn.
“Impossible!” Lyra shrieked, her face contorting with jealousy. “You’re a liar!”
I ignored her. My focus was on Kael, on the unwavering strength in his stormy grey eyes. “The deal I offered you,” I said, my voice low and intense. “I’m adding a new term. I don’t want a temporary bodyguard. I need a true alliance. One that can’t be broken.”
Kael stepped forward, standing shoulder to shoulder with me, a united front against our stunned audience. “What do you have in mind?”
“I want to seal our pact with a blood oath,” I declared, my voice echoing across the now-silent training grounds. “From this moment forward, you are my mate. My only mate.”
“Elara, you wouldn’t dare!” Zane howled, clutching his chest. The faint remnants of our Fated bond were tearing, and the feedback was clearly agonizing for him.
I reached down and pulled a slim dagger from the sheath hidden in my boot. Without a moment’s hesitation, I sliced it across my palm. Blood, dark and rich, welled up instantly. I offered the dagger to Kael.
He took it, his eyes never leaving mine. He mirrored my action, his own hand bleeding freely. Then, in front of the gaping warriors, in front of my traitorous mate and his whore, our blood-slicked hands clasped together.
My voice rose, imbued with the power of my Alpha heritage. “I, Elara Thorne, in the name of the Moon Goddess, choose Kael Voss as my mate. I will share with him my life, my power, and my future!”
Kael’s voice was a deep, unbreakable vow. “I, Kael Voss, accept your claim. I will be your sword and your shield. I will protect you until my last breath.”
The moment the words were spoken, a bolt of energy surged between us, forging a new, powerful bond. Zane screamed, a raw, animalistic sound of pure agony as our old connection was violently and irrevocably shattered.
At the same instant, an incredible wave of Alpha power erupted from Kael, so immense and suffocating that it sent Zane staggering backward. It was the power of a king, an emperor, and it was terrifying. Zane stared at Kael, his eyes wide with a dawning horror. This was no mere Rogue.
Kael reined in his power as quickly as it had appeared, but the message had been sent.
I kept my hand firmly clasped in his. Without another glance at the wreckage of my past, I turned and walked away.
Behind us, Zane clutched his chest, his face a mask of hatred, disbelief, and for the first time, a healthy dose of fear. He had no idea what kind of monster he had just provoked.
Elara Thorne POV:
The blood oath sent shockwaves through the pack. Whispers followed me everywhere, but no one dared to approach me directly. Kael’s display of power had bought me a bubble of wary respect. I used the reprieve to make a call.
I arranged a meeting with Finn Carter, my best friend and the son of the Redwood Pack’s Beta. We met at a small, neutral-ground coffee shop in the human town that bordered our territories. Kael came with me, a silent, imposing presence at my back.
Finn, a whirlwind of energy with spiky pink hair and bright green eyes, enveloped me in a fierce hug the moment he saw me. “Elara! Goddess, it’s good to see you on your feet. I heard what you did. Legendary.”
Over Finn’s shoulder, I saw Kael’s jaw tighten. When Finn released me, Kael subtly shifted his position, placing himself a fraction of an inch closer to me. It was a small, proprietary gesture that Finn didn't miss.
I introduced them. “Finn, this is Kael, my new mate.”
Finn’s cheerful demeanor became more serious as he sized Kael up. He could feel the power rolling off him in subtle waves. “A pleasure,” he said, though his eyes were full of questions.
I didn’t waste time. “Finn, I’m taking back the Silver Moon Pack. Marcus is a corrupt Alpha who tried to sell me off for an alliance. I need your help.”
Finn’s loyalty was absolute. “He’s a snake. Always has been. Just tell me what you need.”
“I need an ally powerful enough to make my adoptive father and the Blackwood family think twice about challenging me,” I said, lowering my voice. “I need you to use the Redwood intelligence network. I want you to find any information you can on the Lycan royal family. The Voss clan.”
Beside me, Kael, who had been silently sipping his coffee, went utterly still. The tiny movement, the slight pause in the cup’s journey to his lips, was almost imperceptible. But I saw it.
Finn’s eyes widened. “The Voss family? Elara, that’s just a myth. And even if it weren’t, the legends say they were the sworn enemies of the Blackwoods. You’d be bringing a war to your doorstep.”
“The enemy of my enemy is my friend,” I said, my voice hard as steel. I had no idea how right I was. “I need that war.”
Finn sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Alright. I’ll see what I can dig up. But be careful. You’re playing with ancient fire.” He turned his attention to Kael. “So, man. What pack did you say you were from?”
“No pack,” Kael replied, his voice flat and dismissive.
Before Finn could press further, I cut in, saying Kael preferred not to talk about his past.
After Finn left, Kael and I sat in silence for a moment. “Why the Voss family?” he asked, his voice neutral.
I stared out the window at the bustling street. “When I was a child, my mother told me stories. She said the White Wolf, my ancestor, was a child of the Goddess. And the Voss clan were her sworn protectors. If there’s any true justice left in this world, it resides with them.”
I felt his gaze on me, intense and unreadable. He didn’t know that he was the very justice I was searching for.
Back in my suite, I poured over the data Nina had sent, compiling a damning report on Zane’s embezzlement that I would present at the birthday party. While I worked, Kael stepped out onto the balcony. I saw him pull out a phone, his back to me.
His voice was too low for me to hear the words, but the tone was one of unquestioned authority. A few minutes later, he came back inside. He didn’t mention the call, and I didn’t ask. I was too focused on my own plans.
I had no way of knowing that he had just spoken to his Beta, Ryker. I didn’t know he had ordered all traces of the Voss survivors to be scrubbed from every network Finn might access. I didn’t know that the Blackwood family was Kael’s target for a much older, much bloodier reason.
He stood by the window, watching me work, his expression softening into something I had never seen before.
*You don’t have to search for the Voss family,* I would later learn he was thinking. *I am already here. And I will give you back everything they took from you.*
