The Alpha's outcast Chapter 1

I used to believe that being chosen as someone’s mate was the pinnacle of happiness, the ultimate proof of love. But love—true love—shouldn’t leave you feeling like a shadow in someone else’s story. My name is Aria, and I’ve spent my life fighting for scraps of affection and respect in a pack that never truly saw me.

Adopted into the Crescent Howl pack alongside my younger sister, Freya, I thought I’d finally found a family. But Freya, with her golden hair and effortless charm, always stole the spotlight. She became the darling of the pack, the pride of our adoptive parents, and eventually, the secret obsession of my mate, Ryker.

I discovered the depth of their betrayal in the second year of my bond with Dave. It wasn’t just a fleeting mistake or a single moment of weakness. They had been meeting in secret under the pale glow of the full moon, the sacred time when bonds are supposed to strengthen. The sting of it was sharper than any claw or fang.

When I first caught the scent of betrayal, I wanted to believe it was a mistake. I ignored the whispers that reached my ears, dismissing them as petty gossip. But the truth couldn’t hide forever. One night, when I returned early from the healer’s den, I followed their intertwined scents to the edge of the forest. There they were—Dave brushing a strand of hair from Freya’s face, their laughter blending into the night like a song meant only for them.

I stood frozen, my wolf clawing at the surface, demanding justice. But I didn’t confront them. Not then. I couldn’t bear the humiliation of confirming what I already knew. Instead, I retreated, my heart heavy with the realization that Dave had never been mine.

Now, as I sat in the packhouse dining hall, surrounded by the wolves I once considered family, I couldn’t shake the weight of their pitying gazes. The atmosphere shifted the moment I stepped inside. Whispers filled the air, and all eyes turned to me.

“Aria, don’t you know we’ve all been waiting for you?” Freya’s voice cut through the room like a knife. She sat at the far end of the table, radiant in a pale blue dress, her green eyes glinting with triumph.

I clenched my fists, willing my wolf to stay calm. “I didn’t realize punctuality was such a concern of yours, Freya,” I said, my voice steady.

Her smile didn’t falter, but her eyes narrowed slightly. “Coming and going as you please,” she continued, her tone laced with mock concern. “How can you not learn basic respect for the pack? And to think, you’re supposed to be bonded soon. How will you ever manage as a mate?”

Dave, sitting beside her, remained silent. Once, his gaze would have been filled with warmth and reassurance. Now, he avoided looking at me altogether, as if I were a stranger.

I took a step forward, meeting Freya’s gaze. “You’ve always been good at pretending to care,” I said, my voice calm but sharp. “But we both know the truth, don’t we?”

A murmur spread through the room, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.

Freya’s expression faltered for a moment before she recovered, tilting her head with feigned innocence. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

I scanned the table, looking at the faces of those who had watched me grow up, the ones who had seen me fight for every bit of approval I could get. “Do any of you?” I asked, my voice rising slightly. “Do you see what’s happening right in front of you? Or have you all chosen to ignore it because it’s easier?”

The silence was deafening. Even Alpha Kellan and Luna Kyra, who sat at the head of the table, seemed taken aback.

“You’ve made your choice,” I said, my voice steady but filled with quiet fury. “You’ve shown me where I stand. And now, I’ll make mine.”

Without waiting for a response, I turned and walked out.

The cool night air hit my face as I stepped outside, and for the first time in years, I felt the weight on my chest begin to lift. I had spent too long trying to please people who never truly cared for me. It was time to live for myself.

The wind carried the distant howl of a wolf, a reminder of the bond I was leaving behind. But I didn’t look back. I was done being the shadow of Freya’s light.

The mountains awaited me, a place where I could heal and rebuild, far from the betrayal and lies of the pack. I wasn’t running away—I was reclaiming my life. One step at a time.
