The Alpha's Defiant Human Mate And Her Hidden Fortune Chapter 1

Ava Moody POV:

"The declaration," a cold, resonant voice echoed through the grand hall, "for the three-year healing bond between Lord Alton Whitehead and his companion, Ava Moody, is today fulfilled."

I knew the weight of those words. Three years ago, I had been brought to House Whitehead ,beyond being a new bride for love, it is also a cure. Lord Alton's mysterious affliction had defied every healer, and the only solution was a life‑bond—a healing contract that tied my vitality to his failing body. In exchange for my service, I was given the title of his wife, but the marriage was merely a vessel for the contract. The bond would hold until his ailment was wholly eradicated.

Today, the declaration confirmed that he was finally free of it.

My hand rested on Alton's forearm.

I felt the muscle beneath the fine wool of his jacket go rigid, a sudden tension that traveled up my arm like a chill. As if my touch were a curse.

Low murmurs rippled through the crowd of Vorrath nobles. Their eyes, sharp and critical, felt like physical needles against my skin.

I forced my spine to stay straight, a polite smile fixed on my face. For three years, I had perfected this role: the flawless, docile human wife.

Alton leaned in, his voice a low whisper meant only for me. "It's over, Ava. Your use is at an end."

His words carried no warmth. None at all.

My heart seized in my chest. A painful, stuttering beat that made it hard to breathe. The smile on my face felt like cracking glass.

I thought today was the beginning. Not the end.

Just then, a stir at the great doors of the hall drew every eye.

Blanche Kensington appeared, a vision in shimmering silver. Her platinum hair caught the light of the enchanted chandeliers, glowing like a halo. She was the daughter of Archon Carlisle, a fact whispered in tones of reverence and envy.

I saw Alton's eyes light up.

This is the emotion he has never shown me in these three years—even in these three years when I have been by his side, taking good care of him, and helping him overcome the lingering effects of his pain.

He didn't hesitate.

He pulled his arm from my grasp, shaking me off like a piece of lint, and strode toward her.

I was left standing alone. A statue abandoned in the center of the room. The whispers around me grew louder, more pointed.

"Look at the little human," a noblewoman hissed behind her fan, her voice just loud enough for me to hear. "She really thought she could be the lady of House Whitehead."

"Yes, truly an absurd delusion," another lady added in agreement. "If it weren't for Lord Alton Whitehead's illness, she, a humble human, wouldn't deserve to step onto this estate, let alone marry a noble noble."

Alton reached Blanche, taking her hand with a practiced grace. He bowed his head and pressed a light, lingering kiss to her knuckles. The gesture was intimate, proprietary. As if they were the ones being celebrated today.

Blanche laughed, a sound like tinkling bells, and her gaze flicked over Alton's shoulder to meet mine. It was a look of pure, triumphant disdain.

My fingernails dug into my palms. The sharp sting of pain was the only thing keeping me upright, the only thing keeping the mask of composure from shattering completely.

Alton took Blanche's arm and led her through the crowd, parting the sea of nobles as he walked toward the head of the hall. Toward the two ornate chairs on the dais where he and I were supposed to sit.

They stopped just a few feet in front of me. He murmured something in her ear, and she giggled, completely ignoring my existence.

A deep, unforgiving cold began to seep into my blood. Three years of careful tending. The sleepless nights spent by his bed. The pain I had endured to soothe the 'incurable ailment' that plagued him.

All of it, in this single moment, became a joke.

The nobles around them began to raise their glasses, toasting the "perfectly matched pair." At the celebration of my husband's declared recovery, I was like a ghost.

I took a deep breath, the air scraping my lungs, and forced myself to turn away. I had to get out of this suffocating room.

My legs felt like lead. Each step was a new agony.

A servant passed with a silver tray. In the polished surface of a wine goblet, I caught a glimpse of my own reflection. A pale face, empty eyes.

Alton's voice rang out again, clear and proud. He was introducing Blanche to the assembly, calling her "the future hope of our house."

That phrase was a hammer blow.

It shattered the last, fragile piece of my heart.

I didn't hesitate anymore. I quickened my pace, nearly stumbling through the throng of bodies.

No one stopped me. No one even looked. All their attention was fixed on the radiant couple on the dais.

I escaped the hall. The cold air of the corridor was a shock against my heated skin, making me shiver.

The sounds of laughter and applause followed me, seeping through the cracks of the heavy doors. Each cheer was a fresh cut.

I leaned against the cold stone wall, the facade finally crumbling. A wave of immense grief and humiliation washed over me, so strong it buckled my knees.

I looked at my empty hands. Three years of my life, given freely.

This public degradation was my reward.

In the distance, I could hear their footsteps as they left the hall together, followed by the sound of his soft laughter. A sound he had never once shared with me.
