The Alpha Billionaire's Fatal Misjudgment Chapter 1

I shoved my shoulder against the oak doors of the top-floor executive suite. They swung inward on the industrial whine of a paper shredder.

Lily stood beside the machine, feeding a leather-bound ledger into its steel teeth.

"Turn it off," I said.

She smiled without looking up. "Company restructuring requires cleanup, Evelyn. You should know that better than anyone."

I crossed the Persian rug and hit the emergency stop. The blades ground to a halt with half a page trapped between them.

"Those are the core financial ledgers."

"Were." Lily reached for another folder. "Chase gave me authority to reorganize the records."

I caught her wrist before she could drop it into the shredder. Her pulse jumped against my fingers.

"You transferred eight million dollars out of the reserve accounts in three weeks. You moved my trust allocation, sold two properties without board approval, and now you are destroying the trail before the quarterly audit."

Her grieving-widow expression vanished. "You lost your title. Stop pretending you still run this company."

"I built half the acquisition network you are draining."

"And Chase still chose me to replace you."

That was the part she enjoyed most.

Three months earlier, Chase's younger brother had died during a border ambush. At the funeral, Chase had promised the entire syndicate would protect Lily and the unborn child she claimed was his brother's heir. By the end of the week, she had my vice president badge, my access codes, and the master bedroom of the family estate. I had been moved to the east wing as if I were an inconvenient guest in my own marriage.

"Your husband died," I said. "That entitled you to support, not unrestricted access to corporate reserves."

Lily leaned close enough for me to smell the sharp floral perfume she wore to every board meeting. "My husband died for this family. I am collecting what his death is worth."

"You are stealing."

"Prove it."

I had already started. Before coming upstairs, I had photographed the transfer authorizations and sent the transaction IDs to an outside accountant I trusted. The numbers were too clean to be accidental: identical amounts split across shell companies, each approved within minutes of Lily logging into the finance system. Whoever had helped her believed Chase would never question a grieving widow. So far, they had been right.

I looked at the shredded leather and paper scattered beneath the machine. "That is exactly what I intend to do."

I tightened my grip and pulled the folder from her hand.

Footsteps struck the marble corridor outside - slow, heavy, unmistakable.

Chase.

A year into our cold, contractual marriage, I knew the rhythm of his anger. Each step landed with the same controlled force he used in boardrooms and pack councils. He was close enough to hear us now.

Lily heard him too.

Her eyes flicked toward the open doorway. The smugness disappeared so quickly it might never have existed. Her mouth trembled. Her shoulders drew inward.

"Lily, don't," I warned.

She whispered, "Watch him choose."

Then she ripped her wrist backward and threw her entire weight toward the open landing.

I released her at once and lunged.

My fingers caught nothing but silk.

Lily fell backward down the marble staircase.

Her shoulder struck first. Then her hip. The second impact twisted her sideways, and the sound of bone against stone cracked through the corridor. She hit the lower landing in a heap.

"Lily!"

Chase rounded the corner at a run.

He passed me without a glance and took the stairs three at a time. By the time I reached the first step, he was already kneeling in the blood spreading beneath her legs.

Lily opened her eyes and clutched his lapel. "Chase... it hurts."

"Don't move." His voice cracked. "Medical team! Now!"

"She did it herself," I said. "She heard you coming. She threw herself backward."

Lily began to sob. "I told Evelyn I would give the vice president position back after the baby was born. I told her I never wanted to take anything from her."

"That is a lie."

"She grabbed me." Lily tucked her wrist against Chase's chest. "She said the baby was the only reason you cared about me."

I stepped down one stair. "Show him the wrist I supposedly injured. Then show him the office. The shredder is full of financial records."

Chase looked up.

His Alpha eyes had gone molten gold.

"Stay where you are."

The pressure of his command rolled through the stairwell. My lungs tightened, but I kept my spine straight.

"Look at the evidence," I said. "For once, look before you decide."

"I don't care about the ledgers!" he roared. "She is bleeding."

"Because she chose to fall."

"You expect me to believe a pregnant woman threw herself down a marble staircase?"

"I expect you to remember that I have never lied to you about company money."

He adjusted Lily in his arms. Blood stained the cuff of his white shirt.

"She is carrying my brother's legacy," he said. "Something you have failed to give this family."

The words landed harder than they should have.

My hand drifted toward my stomach before I stopped it.

Eleven weeks.

A private doctor had confirmed the pregnancy yesterday. The ultrasound image was still hidden in the locked drawer of my dressing room. I had planned to tell Chase after the audit meeting, when we were alone and neither of us was wearing our corporate armor.

Now I watched him cradle another woman while promising me violence.

"If she loses that child," Chase said, his voice dropping into a deadly calm, "you will answer for it with your life."

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I lowered my hand from my stomach.

He would never know. Not while he could turn an unborn child into leverage, punishment, or proof of loyalty.

"Get out of my sight," he ordered.

Chase carried Lily toward the private elevator.

As they disappeared down the corridor, her hand slipped from his shoulder. Hidden in the shadow of his coat, she drew a phone from her pocket and tapped the screen.

A tiny red light went dark.

She had been recording us.
