Tattooed By The Dangerous Biker King Chapter 1

Haley POV:

I stared out the coffee shop window, mindlessly stirring my latte. The foam swirled into a muddy mess, a perfect reflection of my mood.

Across the table, my blind‑date partner Warren Hicks droned on about his "brilliant" future as a junior lawyer. The light glinted off his glasses, but it couldn't hide the self-satisfied gleam in his eyes.

This was the third blind date my mother had set me up on this month.

He cleared his throat, leaning forward. His gaze swept over me like I was an item he was considering for purchase.

"Patty mentioned you're a nurse? That's good. Nurses are basically waitresses in scrubs. Naturally good at taking care of people. My mother isn't in the best of health. After we're married, you can stay home and be a proper tradwife. Look after her, keep the house running, and leave all that career ambition at the door. Let's be honest, you're not here for small talk. You're here to find a husband."

My hand tightened around the warm ceramic mug and I forced a smile.

"Let me stop you right there, Warren. Taking care of patients is my job, not an audition for your live-in nurse or your household staff. And if you think I sat through this date just to become Mrs. Junior Lawyer and spend my life mopping your ego and your mother's floors, then you are even more delusional than your monologue suggests. I'm not interested in self-absorbed jerks who think a degree is a personality. Not now, not ever."

He blinked, then waved a dismissive hand like I was background noise.

"Cute. But we both know that's just the stress talking. A good wife puts her family first. My career is on an upward trajectory, and I need a stable home, not a woman who bolts every time some patient sneezes."

My phone vibrated on the table. The screen lit up: Clinic.

Warren frowned, his displeasure obvious.

"A work call? You're sitting across from a man of my caliber. Shouldn't you be giving me your undivided attention? I don't waste my time on women who can't get their priorities straight." His tone was accusatory, as if interrupting his sacred monologue was a cardinal sin.

I ignored him and answered. "This is Haley."

My coworker Kierra's voice was a frantic rush. "Haley! Get back here! We have an emergency, and it's... a big one. We need you!"

I could hear muffled groans and the low rumble of men's voices in the background. The atmosphere sounded wrong. Tense.

I shot to my feet. "Sorry to cut your little performance short, Warren, but I have to get back to the clinic. Actual people with actual emergencies need me. You just need an audience."

Warren stared at me, his face a mask of disbelief and offense.

"Hey! Our date isn't over! Do you have any idea who you're walking out on?"

I pulled a twenty-dollar bill from my wallet and slapped it on the table, not even waiting for change.

"Oh, I know exactly who I'm walking out on. An entitled, self-important bore who thinks a law degree makes him the center of the universe. My patients need me. You need a mirror and a reality check. Goodbye, Warren."

I walked out without a backward glance, leaving his shocked face behind me.

I pushed my used Honda Civic as fast as it would go, racing back to the clinic on the west side of town. Kierra's words, "a big one," echoed in my head, making my stomach clench.

The moment I burst through the doors, the smell hit me. Not just the sterile scent of antiseptic, but something else. Something thick and metallic, mingled with leather and motor oil.

The small waiting area was crowded with five or six massive men. They all wore black leather vests, cuts I knew they were called, with the emblem of a snarling serpent's head on the back. Their arms were covered in tattoos, their faces grim. The air was so thick with tension I could barely breathe.

My best friend, Kierra, saw me and rushed over, her eyes wide with panic. "Oh, thank God you're here! Serpents of Retribution MC brought in one of their guys, he's hurt bad!"

I looked past her. A young man, barely a boy, was lying on an examination bed, his clothes soaked with blood from what looked like a stab wound to his abdomen. Dr. Reynolds was working on him, his face pale and beaded with sweat.

A burly man with a blond buzz cut stepped in my way. His name was Cody Stone, but everyone in the club called him Ripper. His eyes were wary. "Who are you?"

Kierra quickly interjected, "This is Haley! She's our best nurse!"

I took a deep breath, forcing myself into work mode. I moved around him, my voice steady. "I'm Haley Parker, Registered Nurse. Let me see what we've got."

I began checking the young man's vitals, my movements quick and practiced. The other men didn't stop me, but I could feel their sharp gazes pinned to my back, a cold weight against my spine.

Just then, the clinic door opened again.

All the pressure, all the tension in the room, seemed to snap towards the entrance.

A man walked in who wore the same leather cut but carried himself with an entirely different level of authority. He was tall, with short black hair and a face so handsome it was almost brutal, hardened like stone. A faint, pale scar cut through his left eyebrow, adding a savage edge to his features.

The moment he appeared, every man in a serpent vest subtly straightened, a silent show of respect. One of them spoke in a low voice. "Prez, the kid's just a Prospect. He's stable."

This was their President. Elvis "Knight" Knight.

I'd only ever heard his name in hushed gossip. The absolute monarch of the Serpents of Retribution MC. A man rumored to be ruthless and cold-blooded.

Knight's gaze swept over the injured Prospect, then, without warning, his ice-blue eyes landed on me.

His stare felt like a physical weight, analytical and possessive. It held me for three solid seconds that felt like an eternity.

My heart lurched. I instinctively broke eye contact, focusing back on the patient's pulse, but the tips of my fingers had gone numb and cold.

He didn't speak to me. He walked to the examination bed and addressed Dr. Reynolds, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "Will he be okay?"

I could feel it, even though he was no longer looking at me. The oppressive weight in the room originated from him. I had stumbled into a world where I did not belong.

I forced myself to focus on my work, but the presence of that man, Knight, was like the scent of blood in the air. Everywhere. Suffocating.
