Stolen Face My Husband’s Perfect Lie Chapter 1

A single accident, and half my face was devoured by fire.

After that, every reflective surface vanished from our home. But I was lucky—I had a husband who loved me. A husband who didn't recoil from what I'd become.

His name was Corey Stanley, one of the most sought-after plastic surgeons in the country.

Lately, I'd taken to curling up on the couch, secretly scrolling through his phone. That's when I found the post.

"If your wife was disfigured in a fire—surgery expensive, full recovery unlikely—would you keep trying to fix her, or just find a new model?"

One reply had racked up hundreds of likes: "Married couples are just birds sharing a branch. When disaster strikes, they fly their separate ways. Why not just remake some other woman into your wife's image?"

The part that gutted me? My husband had liked that comment too.

1.

My mind went blank. I quietly darkened the screen and slipped the phone back onto the cushion.

I didn't know if his "like" meant anything.

But ever since the accident, he'd changed my bandages every morning with his own hands, his fingertips so gentle they seemed afraid I might shatter. The meals he prepared were always exactly what I craved, down to the last detail.

He'd hold my hand and murmur, "Don't be scared, sweetheart. I'll design the perfect surgical plan. I'll make you look exactly like you used to."

Now I wondered—was he getting ready to throw me away?

Just then, Corey emerged from the bedroom, his face lit up with excitement as he pulled me into his arms.

"Tomorrow we're going in for your pre-op checkup. Your reconstructive surgery is finally happening."

I kept my expression neutral. Funny. Just the other day you were crowdsourcing whether to trade me in for a factory-original beauty. Changed your mind already?

"Plastic surgery is expensive," I said flatly. "And there's no guarantee I'll look the way I used to. Are you sure you want to go through with this?"

My defeated tone seemed to flip a switch in him. His jaw tightened.

"Hailey Cox, what's wrong with you now?"

"Don't you trust me? I'm one of the best surgeons in this field. I will restore your face."

"And don't worry about money. Worst case, we sell this place and buy something smaller. We'll manage."

The words slipped out before I could stop them: "Wouldn't it be easier to just find someone prettier?"

He froze.

Then his hand clamped around my wrist, his grip almost bruising. Something unhinged flickered in his eyes—obsession wearing the mask of devotion.

"No." His voice dropped low. "I don't want anyone else. Only you."

I wanted to ask: Then why did you post that? Why did you hit 'like'?

The questions climbed to the tip of my tongue. I swallowed them back down.

The next day, I went to the hospital for my checkup.

That's when I overheard him—my husband's voice, sharp with irritation, bleeding through a door left ajar.

"Why won't you come in for the procedure? Do you have any idea how hard it is to book a slot with me? People wait a year to get on my schedule."

"I've already drawn up the full surgical plan. If you back out now, I lose millions. Don't think I won't sue."

A woman's tearful voice crackled through the speaker, promising she'd be there tomorrow afternoon.

Then Corey's tone shifted—velvet smooth, dripping with practiced tenderness. "Hey, I was just messing with you. You know I'd never actually sue."

A pause. Then, softer still:

"I like you too much for that."

The words hit me like ice water.

I stood frozen until the call ended. Only then did I make myself move, slipping out of the consultation room on numb legs.

I arranged my face into something blank, something normal.

Corey found me in the hallway. His arm slid around my waist, and he pressed a kiss to my forehead, smiling down at me. "How'd the checkup go?"

He plucked the report from my hands. Meanwhile, shame coiled tight in my chest. I'm already this hideous. How long are you going to keep pretending you love me?

He scanned the results, then looked up with that same bright smile.

"I'll get everything scheduled. Two weeks, tops—and then we'll have you fixed up."
