My Husband Gave Our Dying Son's Last Birthday to His First Love's Daughter, Then Begged for One More Chapter 1

I came out of the kitchen and saw the silver number six candle inside the clear cake box. My husband, Noah, was loading Benjamin's birthday cake into the trunk of his car.

It was the blue starry cake. Benjamin had picked every star himself.

*Happy 6th Birthday, Benjamin.*

I smiled. I thought Noah was taking it to the amusement park early.

Then I heard him on the phone.

"Yeah, scrape off the name. Write Ava instead. Pink frosting, if you have it."

I stopped walking.

"Noah?"

He didn't turn around. "One second, Claire."

I crossed the driveway and grabbed the cake box with both hands. My nails dragged across the clear plastic lid and left white scratches.

"Who is Ava?"

He hung up and sighed, like I was the problem. "Lily's daughter. Ava's party falls through. I won't let her spend her birthday crying."

"So you give her Benjamin's birthday instead?"

"It's one cake."

"It's his last one."

My voice cracked on the word *last*. Three weeks ago, in the hospital hallway, Noah had squeezed my hand so hard it hurt.

*Even if this is his last birthday, I'll carry the cake myself. I'll be right there when he blows out the candles.*

Now his hands were on the cake box. He was carrying it, all right.

Just not for our son.

---

I let go of the box and pulled out my phone. I called the event coordinator.

"Hi, this is Claire. I'm calling about Benjamin's party on Saturday. The park rental, the superhero actors, the photographer."

The woman paused. "Ma'am, those were transferred. Your husband changed the guest of honor."

"Change it back."

"I'm sorry. Every weekend slot is booked through next month. We have nothing open."

I hung up. My thumb found the confirmation email.

A red banner sat at the top of the screen.

**Transferred.**

The request came from Noah's work email. Sent at 11:47 last night.

I stared at the timestamp. Last night, Noah had flipped his phone face down on the dinner table.

*Client wants to change the event plan,* he'd said.

Behind him, through the kitchen window, I could see our family calendar. A big blue circle around Saturday. Benjamin had drawn a rocket inside it.

I held the phone up to Noah's face.

"You changed his birthday reservation last night. Lily didn't just call you."

His jaw tightened. Then it went slack, almost bored.

"I knew you'd make a scene, so I handled it myself."

"Handled it." I laughed. I didn't mean to. It just came out, sharp and ugly. "Like you handled his checkup in March? His dinner in April? The bedtime stories you keep missing?"

"Lily's alone, Claire. She has no one."

"She has you. Apparently."

---

A white SUV pulled up to the curb. Pink balloons bobbed in the back window.

Lily climbed out in a pink sundress. She was Noah's childhood friend, the girl from next door he'd grown up with. She'd moved back to town six months ago, newly divorced.

Six months. That was when the excuses started.

"Oh my gosh, it's gorgeous!" Lily reached for the cake box. Noah handed it over without a word.

She smiled at me. It was a soft, sorry little smile.

"Claire, thank you. Really. Ava has always wanted a whole family at her birthday party. Having Noah there means everything to her."

"Benjamin might never have another birthday."

Lily's eyes slid past my shoulder, toward the house. Her lips pressed together.

"I know he's not doing well. But honestly, he couldn't go on most of the rides anyway, could he? It's a lot for a sick kid."

"She's right," Noah said quickly. "He'd be wiped out in an hour."

I turned to him. "Then stay here. Just for the candles. Ten minutes, Noah. That's all I'm asking."

He rubbed the back of his neck. He looked tired. He looked like a man who had already made up his mind.

"Ava will remember this birthday. Benjamin might not."

The world went very quiet.

I lifted my eyes past him, to the front door. A pair of small dinosaur slippers sat on the mat.

And in the hallway behind them stood Benjamin.

He wore his blue superhero suit. His paper shield was clutched against his chest. The one we'd colored together last night.

"He's standing right behind you," I said.

---

Noah turned around.

For one second, something flickered in his face.

Then it was gone.

"Hey, buddy." He cleared his throat. "Daddy's got something to do today. I'll make it up to you tomorrow, okay?"

Benjamin said nothing.

Noah slid into the driver's seat. Lily waved from her SUV. The car door shut with a soft, final click.

I didn't run after them.

I knelt down in the hallway and straightened Benjamin's cape. The velcro was crooked.

"Hey, superhero. How about we have our own party? Just you and me."

He nodded slowly. "Can Daddy's chair stay?"

"What?"

"At the table. Can his chair stay there? In case."

My throat burned. "Sure, baby. It can stay."

I set his favorite blue plate at his spot. I made a stack of pancakes and pressed whipped cream between the layers. I dug through every drawer and found one birthday candle. Just one. Yellow, a little bent.

Benjamin blew it out. He didn't make a wish out loud.

At six o'clock, my phone buzzed. Lily had posted a video.

Balloons. Music. A crowd of kids in party hats.

And Noah, holding a little girl on his hip. Ava leaned forward and blew out a silver number six candle on a blue starry cake.

Benjamin's candle. Benjamin's stars.

Noah was laughing. I hadn't heard him laugh like that in months.

I turned the phone over on the counter.

The pancakes went cold. Noah's chair stayed empty.

By nine o'clock, Benjamin was still sitting by the front window. His small hand rested flat against the glass, leaving a foggy print.

He didn't cry. He just lowered his paper shield very carefully onto the floor, like it might break.

I sat down beside him.

"Mommy?"

"Yeah, baby?"

"Is Daddy staying away because I'm sick?"

I pulled him into my lap. He felt so light.

"No, sweetheart. You haven't done anything wrong."

He was quiet for a long time. Then he looked up at me with Noah's brown eyes.

"Then why does he want to be her daddy more than mine?"

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.

"Maybe Daddy will come tomorrow," I whispered.

Benjamin shook his head. Just once. Like he already knew.

---

I carried him to bed. His cape was still tied around his neck. I didn't have the heart to take it off.

As I tucked the blanket under his chin, he reached beneath his pillow.

"I made this for Daddy," he said. "For when he came home."

He pressed a folded piece of paper into my hand.

I opened it.

A mommy with yellow hair. A little boy in a blue cape.

And where the daddy should have been, Benjamin had drawn an empty chair.
