You Skipped My Dress Fitting for Her, So I Married the Man You Call Mr. Bennett Chapter 1

The seamstress slid the last pin into place and stepped back.

"There," Marguerite said, tilting her head. "Now the train falls the way it should."

I stared at the woman in the three-way mirror. Ivory silk, a low back, a skirt that moved like water every time I shifted my weight. Six months ago, I'd cried in this exact spot because the dress felt like it had been waiting for me.

Behind my reflection sat a cream velvet armchair, the one the boutique always set out for the groom. Beside it, a glass of champagne had gone flat.

Nobody had touched it.

My phone buzzed on the side table. I already knew what it would say, the way you know a storm is coming before the first drop hits.

**Mason:** *Sienna's not doing well at her engagement party tonight. I have to go. You try it on without me. The wedding's still two and a half months away.*

I read it twice.

The first time he'd canceled, Sienna was moving apartments and her movers had bailed. The second time, she'd had a screaming fight with her fiancé and called Mason sobbing from a parking garage. Both times, I'd typed the same two words before I could even think.

*It's fine.*

My thumb hovered over the keyboard now. The words were right there, worn smooth from use.

I set the phone face down and didn't answer.

"Is he running late?" Marguerite asked, kneeling to adjust the hem.

"He's not coming."

She glanced up at me, then back down, and wisely said nothing.

At the register, one of the sales associates, a girl named Tess with a nose ring and a bright laugh, was scrolling on her phone between appointments. She let out a little gasp.

"Oh my God. Is that Sienna Carlisle? She's live right now. Her engagement party looks insane."

Marguerite went still. She'd met Mason. She'd probably heard the name Sienna more than once in this room.

"Can I see?" I asked.

Tess hesitated, reading something in my face, then walked over and handed me her phone.

The stream was all gold light and rooftop string bulbs, a city skyline glittering behind a crowd in cocktail dresses. Sienna stood at the center of it, her dark hair pinned up, laughing at something off-camera. She looked like she'd never had a bad night in her life.

Then the camera shifted, and I saw him.

Mason stood right behind her, close enough that his chest nearly brushed her shoulders. He was holding the ends of a diamond necklace, fastening it at the nape of her neck with careful fingers. He took his time. When the clasp caught, he smoothed the chain flat against her skin.

The same hands that had slipped a ring on my finger fourteen months ago.

The comments scrolled fast. Hearts, fire emojis, *goals*. Then a man's voice cut through the music, someone holding the camera.

"Hey, does Leo know your ex is the one putting jewelry on his fiancée? He's not gonna mind?"

People laughed. Sienna turned, leaned her head back against Mason's shoulder like it belonged there, and smiled up at the lens.

"Leo knows Mason will always be my best friend. That's never going to change."

I waited for Mason to step away. To laugh it off, put some air between them, do anything a man who was getting married in two and a half months should do.

He didn't move. Instead, he picked up a champagne flute from a passing tray and raised it.

"To Sienna," he said, loud enough for the whole rooftop. "The best thing that ever happened to Leo. Be happy, Si. You deserve it."

Glasses clinked. Someone whistled.

"You okay?" Tess asked quietly.

"Keep it on," I said.

On the screen, Sienna had wrapped both arms around one of Mason's. She was a little drunk, glowing with it.

"Okay, but real question," she said, poking his chest. "Once we're both married, if I call you at three in the morning, you're still gonna come, right?"

The crowd made an exaggerated *ooooh*. Someone yelled, "Careful, Mason!"

I watched his face. I knew every expression he had. The one for when he was annoyed with his boss. The one for when he was trying not to laugh at a funeral. The one for when he told me he loved me in the dark.

He didn't look uncomfortable. He looked fond.

"Always," Mason said. "Marriage doesn't erase history."

The cheer that went up was deafening, even through a phone speaker.

I handed the phone back to Tess. My hand was steady, which surprised me.

Then I looked at the mirror again. At the woman in the dress, at the flat champagne, at the empty velvet chair.

For two years, I'd told myself the problem was Sienna. That she was needy and dramatic and didn't know how to stand on her own. That once she got engaged, she'd lean on Leo instead. That once Mason and I were married, things would settle. I'd been waiting it out, like Sienna was a phase.

But she wasn't the one who'd just made a promise in front of a hundred people.

Mason had. And he'd made it knowing I would be his wife by then. He wasn't planning to change anything after the wedding. He was planning for me to accept it. The three a.m. calls, the canceled dinners, the excuses I'd smooth over for his parents. He'd already decided that was what being married to him meant.

He just hadn't bothered to tell me.

Marguerite cleared her throat gently. "Miss Evelyn? I still need to confirm the final measurements, and usually the groom likes to see the fit before we sew it in. Do you want to wait a bit longer? Maybe he'll make it after all."

"No," I said. "That won't be necessary."

"Are you sure? We can stay open late. It's no trouble."

"I'm sure." I turned my back to the mirror. "Could you help me with the buttons?"

There were forty-two of them, tiny silk-covered pearls running from my shoulder blades to the base of my spine. I'd counted them the first time I tried the dress on, giddy, imagining Mason fumbling with every one on our wedding night.

Marguerite worked through them one by one. Neither of us said anything. With each button, the silk loosened, and the weight of it slid a little further from my shoulders.

When she reached the last one, I stepped out of the dress. She caught it before it touched the floor.

In the dressing room, I pulled on my jeans and my gray sweater, the one with the stretched-out cuff I always tugged at when I was nervous. I didn't tug at it now. I stood there for a second and just breathed.

When I came back out, Marguerite had hung the dress on the padded hanger by the mirror. Under the lights, it still looked beautiful. It just didn't look like mine anymore.

"Should I bag it for you?" she asked.

"Leave it here." I picked up my purse. "And please cancel the final fitting."

Her mouth opened, then closed. She nodded.

Tess was watching from the register, eyes wide. I gave her a small smile on my way to the door, because none of this was her fault.

Outside, the evening air was cold and smelled like rain on hot pavement. Traffic hissed past on Fifth Street. I scrolled to a number I'd called almost every day for six months and pressed it before I could think too hard.

Dana picked up on the second ring, bright and brisk as ever. "Evelyn! Perfect timing, I was just about to email you about the florist. They want to swap the peonies for garden roses because of the shipping delay, and honestly I think it's going to look even—"

"Dana."

She stopped.

"I need you to stop everything."

"Okay," she said slowly. "If this is about the date, we can talk to the venue. Moving it a few weeks isn't ideal, but I've done it before. Is Mason's schedule—"

"It's not about the date." I looked back through the boutique window, at the ivory dress hanging alone under the lights. "I'm not rescheduling anything."

The line went quiet.

"Evelyn, what are you saying?"

"Cancel the wedding," I said. "All of it."
