Sixty Nights in Our Divorced House Chapter 1

Three years after divorcing Nathan Cole, I finally had a life that did not hurt when I woke up.

Julian Hart was gentle, steady, and ready to build a future with me.

Selling the Maine beach house was supposed to erase the last debt between Nathan and me.

Then the buyer demanded sixty days of joint occupancy, and we both arrived with new partners.

Nathan brought his young fiancée, Camille.

I brought Julian.

The first night, a storm drowned both guest rooms and left only two dry bedrooms.

Camille smiled and suggested the divorced couple share the master suite.

My suitcase was soaked, so I pulled Nathan’s old white shirt from the closet.

He stared at my bare legs as if three years had vanished.

Then Julian knocked, and Nathan said the one thing neither of us had told them.

“Tell us why you really divorced,” Julian said.

“Not tonight,” I warned.

“What happened in this house?” Camille asked.

Nathan looked straight at me. “We lost our baby here.”

"Sign here, and the sixty-day clock starts," Maisie said, tapping the thick stack of legal documents. "The sale price is one million, two hundred eighty thousand, with a hundred and sixty thousand held in repair escrow. Both owners stay in the house for two months to oversee the work. You fund approved repairs upfront, and the escrow reimburses them at closing."

I took the pen. Across the glass table, Nathan watched my hand. When I finished my signature, he reached over, took the pen from my fingers, and set it down on the glass. He left the cap pointing exactly toward my right knuckles. Eight years of marriage had burned that precise habit into his muscle memory.

Then Camille reached for his arm. Her diamond engagement ring caught the harsh overhead kitchen light, erasing the familiarity instantly.

"Once this transaction clears, I can put down the payment for the independent audio studio," I told Julian, keeping my voice perfectly even.

I did not mention the alternative. If this deal collapsed, I would be drowning in a three thousand, eight hundred forty-dollar monthly mortgage, plus property taxes and insurance. I needed this house sold.

Julian rested his hand on the back of my chair instead of answering for me. "It is your call, Elena. Whatever you decide, we handle it."

"All repair decisions must be unanimous," Nathan stated, his lawyer persona sliding perfectly into place. "We document every contractor visit. No unilateral choices."

Camille laughed, leaning her head against Nathan's shoulder. "Relax, Nate. We are just here for a long vacation."

I looked past them, my eyes landing on the bare wall beside the master bedroom door. The small iron hook was empty. We used to keep a sea-blue brass key there, a symbol of our old rule to never lock each other out, to never use silence to solve a problem. The key was gone. I wondered who threw it away.

Wind battered the coastal windows by midnight, driving ocean water straight onto the upper terrace. The ceiling in the east guest room gave way first, followed by the west room ten minutes later.

"Kill the breaker for that entire side," Owen's voice crackled through the video call on my phone. The contractor held a flashlight under his chin on the screen, illuminating his frown. "You cannot sleep in those rooms for at least forty-eight hours. Let it dry out, or you risk an electrical fire."

I ended the call and looked at the three people standing in the dark hallway. Water dripped steadily onto the hardwood behind us.

"I will take the downstairs sofa," I offered, grabbing a dry blanket from the hall linen closet.

Nathan turned to Julian. "She has a bad back. The couch will not work."

He said it smoothly, like I was still his wife, still someone who needed him to translate her physical pain to the rest of the world.

"Nathan," I said loudly. "My body no longer belongs to you to explain."

He lowered the decorative cushions he had just picked up from the bench. For the first time all evening, he did not offer a crisp, professional rebuttal. He just stared at my hands.

Camille stepped between us, her smile bright and rigid. "Julian and I can take the downstairs study. It has the pull-out sofa. You two take the master bedroom." She waved a hand dismissively. "You have been divorced for three years. Sharing a mattress will not rewrite the certificate."

Julian looked at me. "Are you okay with that, Elena?"

"No," Nathan answered before I could open my mouth.

Camille's smile froze. The silence in the hallway stretched tight. I watched Nathan's jaw clench. He was not afraid of sharing a bed with me. He was terrified of that specific room.

The leaking roof had completely soaked my open suitcase. The power cut meant the dryer was dead.

Inside the dim master closet, I pushed past empty wooden hangers until my fingers brushed cold cotton. A white button-down shirt. Nathan's. I pulled it over my head. The hem dropped all the way to my mid-thigh. On the left cuff, a tiny jagged line of blue thread stood out—a clumsy repair job I had done eight summers ago.

Footsteps stopped at the threshold.

Nathan stood in the doorway. His gaze dropped to the oversized shirt, then snapped to the window.

"The second button is loose," he muttered.

"I know." I tossed a spare blanket onto the mattress, then grabbed two heavy pillows and shoved them down the exact center of the sheets. I pointed to the right side. "Your side. The boundary is here."

He did not move toward the bed. "Why did you tell Julian your cramps were from an old sports injury?"

"Because Julian does not know about the pregnancy," I snapped, keeping my voice low. "He does not need to know."

"Camille does not know either." Nathan finally stepped into the room, kicking the door partially shut. "Are we just supposed to pretend the last decade did not happen?"

"We did not just pretend, Nathan. We cut it out entirely."

The door pushed open.

"I brought dry towels," Julian said.

He stood there, holding a stack of white terry cloth. Camille hovered right behind him, her eyes darting between us.

"You already decided once what was worth saying," I told Nathan, ignoring the intrusion.

Julian stepped fully into the room. "What exactly are you two hiding?"

Camille did not look at Julian. She stared at Nathan, then her gaze drifted to the makeshift wall of pillows dividing the mattress.

"We did not divorce because we stopped loving each other," Nathan said flatly.

"Nathan, stop," I warned. "We can talk about this in the morning."

"No." He turned his body toward Julian and Camille. "If the four of us are trapped in this house for sixty days, I refuse to let you two live in a fabricated story."

I watched his right hand. His thumb rubbed frantically against the empty air near his wrist, a phantom gesture, as if he were wearing the shirt himself. He remembered exactly which summer this shirt belonged to. He remembered the blue thread.

"What happened in this house?" Camille asked, her voice thinning out.

A sudden gust of wind slammed against the exterior wall, rattling the window frames. The sudden shift in air pressure popped the poorly latched bedside drawer open by an inch.

Inside the dark wood gap, a dull metallic gleam caught the light. The sea-blue brass key. He had not thrown it away. He had kept our rule hidden in the dark for three years.

Nathan looked directly at me.

"We lost a child here," he said.

The neat stack of towels in Julian's hands folded inward, collapsing down the middle. Camille slowly raised her left hand, her fingers pressing hard against her diamond ring.

They stood in absolute silence, waiting for my next word.
