Sins Of The Heart Chapter 1

"Alicia, do you really believe you're the woman Lorenzo loves? Look at him now, with me."

Selena Vasquez’s words pierced through the intoxicating music and laughter that filled the air. Her voice was low, venomous, yet loud enough for my world to shatter.

The patio lights painted a golden glow on the sprawling garden, a place meant to be enchanting. Tonight, it felt more like a cruel stage, where I was the unwilling performer in a tragedy I hadn’t agreed to act in. Around me, the murmur of laughter and polite conversation mixed with the soft strains of a string quartet, yet it all seemed muted—distant echoes against the roaring of my pulse.

My hands clenched around the flute of champagne, the chill of the glass biting into my skin. I tried to ignore the sting of her words, but they hit too close to the truth I’d been trying so hard to avoid. I didn’t want to believe her. I wanted to dismiss her smug smile as nothing more than bravado, a desperate attempt to rattle me. But then my gaze shifted, and there they were.

Lorenzo. My husband. His lips pressed against hers under the shadows of the ancient oak tree. Her fingers tangled in his dark hair, her body curved against his like she’d claimed him long ago. The intimacy of their embrace struck me like a blow, each second dragging out in cruel, vivid detail. The way his hand lingered at the small of her back, how she tilted her head to deepen the kiss—it was a language of desire that left no room for misinterpretation.

It was as though the entire world narrowed into that one moment. The revelers around me blurred into a haze of fine suits and dazzling gowns. The chandeliers suspended over the ballroom seemed to flicker, struggling against the storm brewing in my chest. A storm of humiliation, anger, and heartbreak.

“It hurts, doesn’t it?” Selena turned to face me fully, her smirk widening as she drank in my reaction. Her red-painted lips curled in satisfaction, as if she were savoring the taste of my pain. “To realize you’re just a pawn. A pretty, lifeless doll dressed for show.”

Her words clawed at my composure. Every syllable was a dagger, sharp and unrelenting. But I refused to give her the satisfaction of seeing me crumble. I squared my shoulders, meeting her gaze with every ounce of defiance I could muster. The champagne in my hand trembled, but my voice didn’t falter.

“And yet, here I stand,” I said through gritted teeth, my tone icy. “While you scuttle in the shadows, desperate for scraps of his attention.”

Selena’s laugh was sharp, unkind, cutting through the heavy scent of roses and expensive perfume that hung in the air. Her laughter echoed with cruel delight, as if she were reveling in the game she was playing, confident she’d already won.

“Lorenzo doesn’t love you, Alicia,” she said, her voice dipping into a mockery of pity. “He married you for an alliance. Power, my dear. Not affection.” She leaned closer, her words like poison dripping into my ears. “But you already knew that, didn’t you?”

My heart thundered in my chest, each beat a resounding reminder of my helplessness. Every fiber of my being screamed to walk away, to escape the humiliation clawing at my throat. But I couldn’t leave. Not now. Not like this. Not when every guest in the garden seemed to be watching, their eyes flicking between Selena and me with undisguised interest. To flee would be to admit defeat, to hand her the victory she so clearly wanted.

“Do you think you’ve won?” I asked, forcing a steady calm into my voice that I didn’t feel. “You’re nothing more than an old obsession he’s yet to outgrow. Lorenzo and I are tied by bloodlines, contracts, and legacy. All you have is…” I gestured vaguely toward the garden, toward the fleeting passion she clung to, “…this.”

For the briefest of moments, Selena’s smirk faltered. A flicker of doubt passed through her expression, but it was gone before I could take satisfaction in it. She stepped forward, closing the distance between us, her heels clicking ominously against the stone path.

“You’re brave for someone who’s about to lose everything,” she hissed, her voice laced with venom. “But bravery won’t save you.”

Before I could react, her hand shot out suddenly, shoving me backward. It happened so fast, too fast for me to catch my balance. My heel caught on the edge of the fountain, and time seemed to freeze as I stumbled.

The world tilted, and the cold kiss of marble and water swallowed me whole.

The fountain’s freezing embrace shocked the air from my lungs, the weight of the moment finally pulling me under. My vision blurred as the water churned around me, and for a fleeting moment, all sound vanished. The world above seemed impossibly distant, unreachable.

Above the surface, Selena’s laughter rang loud and victorious. “Such a shame, Alicia. You’re not even worth a fight.”

Her words, cruel and final, echoed in my mind as I flailed against the slippery stone. My fingers scrambled for purchase, desperation surging through me as I struggled to rise. But the weight of her words, the betrayal I had just witnessed, and the coldness of the water seemed to paralyze me.

And then I saw him. Lorenzo. Standing under the garden lights, his figure silhouetted against the golden glow. He was frozen, his lips moving as if to call my name. But I couldn’t hear him. Couldn’t feel anything except the icy tendrils of despair winding their way through my chest.

The last thing I thought before the darkness claimed me was that my world had been drowning long before the water had pulled me under.
