Chapter 4

The forest ended abruptly, replaced by the looming walls of the Shadow Court. Towers of black stone spiraled into the stormy sky, glowing veins of dark magic pulsing along the surface. Avalora's chest tightened.

"I...this place," she whispered, awe and fear mixing. "It's...alive."

Rion's silver eyes never left hers. "It is alive," he said. "And it hates intruders."

She swallowed hard. The mark on her wrist burned faintly, pulsing as if reacting to the Court itself. She glanced at him. "It feels...angry?"

"Not angry," he said, voice low, almost a growl. "Hungry. And it senses you."

Avalora's heart skipped. Senses me? What did that even mean?

Rion's cloak swirled around him as he led her inside. The gates groaned, ancient and ominous, opening with a sound that echoed through the stone halls. Shadows moved along the walls, alive, whispering, crawling like snakes.

"This way," he said, gripping her wrist-not too tightly, just enough to remind her she couldn't escape. The electricity between them made her stomach twist. She hated that she felt drawn to him, hated the warmth spreading through her chest at every brush of his fingers.

Inside, the court was darker than she imagined. Figures cloaked in black robes moved like whispers through the halls, their eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. Avalora's breath caught. Are they...human?

"They're the council," Rion said quietly, as if reading her thoughts. "Shadow-blooded, like me. They'll decide if you stay...or die."

"Decide if I...what?" Avalora's voice trembled.

Rion's jaw tightened. "Your mark has power none of us fully understand. They'll want proof you can survive-and control it."

Before she could protest, a figure stepped forward: tall, lithe, eyes like black ice. "Rion," it said, voice smooth and commanding. "You bring her here? The Half-Blood? Dangerous and untrained."

"She is stronger than you think," Rion said, tone cold. His eyes, silver and piercing, locked on Avalora's. "And if you touch her, she will destroy you."

The council member's gaze flicked to her mark. Avalora felt heat rush to her cheeks. She wanted to hide it, cover it, do anything-but Rion's presence made her mark flare golden. Why does it react to him?

The figure's lips curved into a faint, sharp smile. "Interesting. Perhaps she is...fated."

"Fated?" Avalora asked, trembling.

"Yes," Rion said, stepping closer, hand brushing hers again. Sparks of warmth-electric and terrifying-ran through her. "The prophecy speaks of one with the mark who will decide the balance of magic. And it begins with her."

Avalora's stomach dropped. Balance of magic? Decide the world? Me?

Her eyes widened as the council members circled, whispering, watching, waiting. Fear clawed at her chest-but alongside it, a strange thrill. Every glance from Rion made her heart hammer, every brush of his cloak against hers felt like fire.

"You will train," Rion said, silver eyes softening just slightly. "And survive. And maybe..." His gaze flicked down to her lips, almost imperceptibly. "...you'll learn that your power belongs with me."

Avalora swallowed, trying to focus, trying not to give in to the pull that had been growing since the first moment they touched.

With him? she thought. Impossible. Dangerous. And yet...

She couldn't deny it. The connection between them was undeniable.

The council's whispers grew louder, a chant of shadows and magic, as the storm outside raged harder. Avalora realized the storm outside wasn't just in the sky-it was in the Court, in her mark, and in Rion.

And for the first time, she understood: there was no turning back.

The dark prince, the prophecy, the magic in her veins-it was all tied together. And it was just beginning.

Chapter 5

The dawn in the Shadow Court was never bright. Light filtered through jagged black towers, casting long shadows across the stone floors. Avalora rubbed her eyes, feeling both exhausted and strangely alive.

Rion stood across the hall, arms crossed, watching her with that silver-eyed intensity that made her pulse jump. "You slept enough," he said, voice low and commanding. "Time to train."

"Train?" Avalora groaned. "You mean...fight magic? I don't even know where to start!"

His lips curved into the faintest smirk. "You know more than you think."

Before she could protest further, he extended his hand. "Come. Control the mark. Control yourself, or you will die."

Her wrist throbbed at the thought. The golden lines beneath her skin seemed to pulse in anticipation. She hesitated, but his gaze...that magnetic, impossible gaze...pulled her forward like a tide she couldn't resist.

Rion led her to a shadowed training chamber. The walls were alive with faint whispers, echoes of ancient power. A circle of runes glowed faintly on the floor.

"Stand here," he instructed, pointing to the center. "Focus on your mark. Let it guide you. Don't fight it."

Avalora swallowed hard and lifted her hands. A tingling warmth spread from her mark up her arm, reaching into her chest. She took a deep breath, trying to listen to the pulse beneath her skin.

"Good," Rion murmured, stepping close. "Now, feel it. Don't think. Feel."

A surge of energy burst from her mark, bright gold, and the circle of runes flared. Shadows inside the chamber twisted and writhed, reacting to her presence. Her heart hammered-not just from exertion, but from the closeness of Rion behind her.

"You're...stronger than I expected," he said, voice softer now, almost reverent. "And yet...dangerous."

Avalora spun around, fists raised. "Dangerous? Me?"

"Yes," he said, stepping closer. His hand brushed hers again, accidentally or maybe not. Sparks of warmth ran up her arm, making her gasp. "To those who underestimate you. And...to me."

Her chest tightened. She hated the pull she felt. Hated the heat rising in her body. And yet, she didn't step back.

Before she could respond, the chamber darkened further. Shadows gathered in the corners, forming snarling shapes with glowing red eyes. Avalora froze, fear and exhilaration mixing.

"Focus!" Rion commanded, grabbing her shoulders. "You can do this. Together."

Her mark flared, golden light spilling across the floor. Shadows shrieked and twisted, recoiling as the power surged outward. Rion stepped beside her, and instinctively, their hands brushed. Avalora's breath hitched at the contact, heart hammering.

"You're doing well," he said, silver eyes locking on hers. "Don't be afraid. Channel the energy. Let it flow through you, not against you."

She nodded, trembling, and let the power surge from her mark. Shadows exploded into smoke, retreating from the combined force. When the last tendril vanished, Avalora sank to her knees, gasping.

Rion knelt beside her, face close enough that she could feel his warmth. "See?" he murmured. "You are powerful. And you will learn to control it...with me."

Avalora's heart raced. She wanted to deny it, wanted to pull away, but a strange, magnetic force held her there.

"With you?" she whispered, almost against her will.

"Yes," he said, voice low, dark, and commanding. "Whether you want it or not."

The air between them pulsed-dangerous, intoxicating, and impossible to ignore. And Avalora realized something terrifying: she didn't want to pull away.

Not now. Not ever.

Chapter 6

The training chamber had barely settled from yesterday's battle when a deafening roar shook the Shadow Court. Avalora stumbled, heart hammering. Shadows twisted unnaturally in the hallways, darker than before, moving with purpose.

Rion's expression hardened. "They're testing you," he said, voice sharp. "Not just the magic in your mark, but your will. If you fail...they will take you from me."

Avalora's stomach dropped. "From you? What does that even mean?"

He didn't answer. Instead, he grabbed her hand, his silver eyes burning into hers. "Then focus. Trust yourself. Trust me."

The shadows surged into the chamber, coalescing into massive beasts with glowing eyes and jagged claws. Avalora froze, terror threatening to paralyze her.

"Move!" Rion commanded. He stepped forward, dark energy radiating from him, shadows curling around his boots. "Use your mark! Channel it!"

Her wrist flared golden as if reacting to his presence, heat crawling up her arm and spreading through her chest. Avalora took a deep breath, drawing the power from the mark. Sparks of light shot from her hand, striking the nearest shadow.

The creatures hissed and recoiled, but more advanced forms lunged at her. Fear surged-but beneath it, excitement, and something darker, deeper.

Rion moved closer, guiding her movements. Their hands brushed repeatedly as they struck, blocked, and repelled the creatures together. Avalora's chest burned, not just from exertion, but from the heat between them. Every glance from him, every touch, made her pulse spike.

"You're stronger than they anticipated," Rion murmured, voice rough. "And...stronger than I expected."

Avalora's breath hitched. "Stronger than...you?"

He stepped closer, shadows curling protectively around them. "Stronger in ways you don't understand. And dangerously...connected to me."

The last shadow fell, dissolving into smoke, and Avalora sank to her knees, shaking with adrenaline. Rion knelt beside her, hand hovering over hers-not quite touching, but close enough to make her heart leap.

"You see?" he said softly, silver eyes piercing. "You're not just powerful. You're mine. And no one else can protect you the way I can."

Avalora's chest tightened. She wanted to deny it. Wanted to step back. But the pull was magnetic, intoxicating, impossible.

"I..." she whispered, voice trembling.

He leaned closer, his lips inches from hers. The storm outside seemed to echo the tension inside the chamber. "You don't have to say anything," he murmured. "Just...feel it. You can't fight it."

Her mark glowed brighter, as if affirming his words. Avalora's head spun. Desire. Fear. Power. All crashing together into a single, undeniable truth: she couldn't resist him.

Not now. Not ever.

And somewhere deep in the shadows of the Court, unseen eyes watched-and the prophecy whispered: the Half-Blood is awakening...
