She Chose Her Nephew Over Her Own Daughter ,Now She's Begging Me to Stay Chapter 1

Five years ago, my father died in a sudden car accident. The insurance company paid out $2.3 million. My mother kept $100,000 for herself and gave the remaining $2.2 million—every last cent—to her nephew.

She looked me in the eye, her tone heavy with meaning. "You'll get married eventually. Once a daughter marries, she belongs to someone else's family. I gave the money to your cousin so he can look after me in my old age. You need to understand."

I didn't say a word. The next morning, I packed my bags and left to find work. I didn't come home once in five years.

This year, my husband asked if I was going back.

"No."

The word had barely left my mouth when my uncle called.

"Your mother had a stroke. She's paralyzed. Get back here."

……

He hung up before I could respond.

My fingers tightened around the phone until the case bit into my palm. My husband gently took my hand, his eyes soft. "Whatever you decide, I'm right here. Always."

I looked up at him, and the tears came before I could stop them. He cupped my face and wiped them away, one by one, with a tenderness that nearly undid me.

I grabbed his hand and held on tight. Strength flooded through me. I drew a deep breath.

"We're going back."

A day later, we arrived at the place I'd left five years ago.

A place—that's what it was. Because in my heart, it had stopped being home the day I walked out.

My husband and I pushed through the door, and every head in the room turned.

The whole crew was here.

Howard James, my uncle. Brenda James, his wife. Gloria Palmer, my older aunt. Patty Wallace, my younger aunt.

Howard spoke first, his voice sharp with accusation. "So you finally remembered to show up. If I hadn't called, would you have forgotten you even have a mother?"

"Oh, stop it." Brenda James nudged him aside, then crossed the room with a wide smile, clasping my hands in hers. "It's been five whole years since we've seen our Judy! You're finally home."

"Hmph."

Howard's expression stayed stony as he rose to his feet.

"Now that she's here, Lillian Mason is her responsibility. We're leaving."

Gloria Palmer and Patty Wallace said nothing. They fell in behind him.

Brenda patted my hand.

"Your mother had a sudden stroke and she's paralyzed. You're her daughter—you need to take good care of her."

I pulled my hand free.

"Me take care of her? Where's Dudley James?"

A flicker of displeasure crossed Brenda's face. "What does this have to do with Dudley?"

"Everything. My mother handed over my father's entire insurance payout to him. Every dollar. He was supposed to take care of her in her old age. Now she's bedridden and paralyzed—of course he should be here, doing his part."

The words landed like a slap. Brenda's smile curdled. Howard's face went dark.

I let out a cold laugh and turned to Gloria and Patty. "You were both there the day my mother gave that money to Dudley. Tell me—am I wrong?"

They exchanged an uncomfortable glance. A long silence stretched before Patty finally spoke.

"Judy, your mother is lying in that room unable to move. She needs someone by her side. Now isn't the time to dredge up old grievances."

Gloria nodded along. "She's right. Whatever was said back then... she's still your mother. You're her daughter. If her own daughter won't care for her, who will? A stranger?"

"I'm the one dredging up old grievances?"

A disbelieving laugh escaped me.

"She said it herself—with her own mouth—that she was giving the money to Dudley for her retirement. She didn't leave me a single cent. Where were all of you then? Nobody accused me of being petty when I walked out that door with nothing."

"And you—" I turned on Gloria. "Now that she's paralyzed and needs someone to wipe her brow and change her sheets, suddenly you remember she has a daughter. Funny how no one spared me a single thought for five years."

BANG.

Howard slammed his fist on the table.

"That was your mother's money! She had every right to give it to whoever she wanted!"

I smiled.

"You're absolutely right. And whether or not I take care of her is my decision. None of you have any say in it."

"You—!" Howard jabbed a finger at me, his face mottled with fury.

Gloria sighed.

"Your mother is lying in the next room, Judy. You're her only daughter. Is this really the time to be making a scene?"
