Severed Vows A Mafia Love Story Chapter 1

A week before the ceremony, I found what I believed was a sweet surprise.

Gianluca's wedding band sat in its velvet box on the dresser of the Castellano estate, left carelessly beside his cufflinks and a half-empty glass of bourbon. I shouldn't have looked. But the box was open, the gold catching the low lamplight, and curiosity pulled my fingers toward it before reason could intervene.

Engraved on the inside of the band, in a delicate script: Addie.

The nickname he had always used for me.

I pressed the ring to my lips, feeling a warmth bloom behind my ribs that I hadn't felt in months. In one week, I would stand beside Gianluca Castellano in a blood-bound union that would seal the remnants of my father's territory into his family's empire. It was an arrangement, yes. But over five years, I had let myself believe it had become something more. That the way he called me Addie in the dark, the way his hand found the small of my back when we entered a room together, meant that the arrangement had grown roots in something real.

I set the ring back in its box, careful to leave it exactly as I'd found it.

Then his call came.

His voice was loose, slurred, the sounds of men laughing and glasses clinking bleeding through the phone. His bachelor party. A private gathering at one of the Castellano social clubs on the east side, the kind of place where the windows were blacked out and the doors were watched by men who never smiled.

"Come get me," he said. No please. No Addie. Just the flat command of a man too drunk to drive and too proud to let one of his own soldiers see him carried out.

I went.

The club sat at the end of a narrow street in the old neighborhood, its brick facade unremarkable, its interior soaked in decades of cigar smoke and spilled whiskey and secrets that would never leave those walls. A heavy-set man at the door recognized me and stepped aside without a word, his eyes dropping deferentially as I passed.

Inside, the air was thick with the haze of Turkish tobacco and the low murmur of conversation. Crystal tumblers caught the amber light of wall sconces. The bachelor party had thinned out; most of the men had gone, leaving behind overturned glasses and the lingering smell of expensive cologne.

And then I saw him.

My heart didn't just drop. It cracked, cleanly, like a bone snapping under pressure.

Gianluca sat at a corner booth, his jacket discarded, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair falling across his forehead in a way that made him look younger, more vulnerable. His hand was wrapped around another woman's fingers. Not loosely, not carelessly. He held her hand the way a man holds something precious, something he's afraid of losing. And he was looking at her with an expression I had spent five years trying to earn.

Soft. Open. Unguarded.

The word left his mouth like a prayer.

"Addie."

Not to me.

To her.

Our eyes met across the dim room, and in that frozen, airless moment, I saw the ring.

It sat on her finger. A gold band, identical to the one I had pressed to my lips not two hours ago in the quiet of the Castellano estate. The same delicate script would be engraved inside. The same name. Addie. I was certain of it with a sickness that rose from somewhere deep and primal.

Minutes ago, that ring had been a symbol of everything I'd built my hope on. Now it gleamed on the slender hand of a woman I did not know, seated beside the man I was supposed to marry in seven days.

The silence in the room was suffocating. The few remaining men shifted in their seats, eyes darting between me and the booth, no one willing to be the first to speak. Someone set a glass down too hard, and the sound cracked through the quiet like a gunshot.

Finally, one of Gianluca's associates broke the tension, his voice strained with the effort of sounding casual. "Adriana, you made it. Gianluca's had a few too many. You know how these nights go."

Gianluca rose unsteadily from the booth, bracing one hand on the table. He blinked, scanning the room with the unfocused gaze of a man swimming through bourbon, and did not meet my eyes. He looked past me. Through me.

"Addie?" he murmured, his brow furrowing in confusion. "Isn't Addie sitting right here?"

His gaze drifted back to the woman beside him, and when it landed, his entire face changed. The confusion dissolved. A smile broke across his features, slow and warm and devastating in its sincerity.

"I knew you'd come," he said to her, his voice thick with relief and a tenderness that cut me deeper than any blade. "You still care about me."

The woman he called Addie wore a white dress that fell around her like water, her dark hair loose over her shoulders, her features delicate and composed. She was beautiful in the way that certain women are beautiful: quietly, dangerously, in a way that makes you understand why wars are started over such things.

And as I stared at her face, a shock of recognition hit me like a fist to the sternum. I had seen her before. Not in person. In a photograph, tucked inside one of Gianluca's old books on a shelf in his study. A photograph he had never mentioned. A girl with dark eyes and a half-smile, standing beside a younger version of him in front of a house I didn't recognize.

My heart plummeted.

The engraving on the ring. The nickname. Addie.

A cold, terrible clarity settled over me like frost spreading across glass. We were both called Addie. Adriana. Adelina. Two names, one diminutive, and five years of a life I had built on what I now understood to be a foundation of sand.

Could it really be a coincidence?

No. It couldn't.
