He Let His First Love Destroy Our Baby's Grave After I Saved His Life Chapter 1

ISABELLA'S POV

I carried two bouquets of white lilies up the rain-slick steps of Rosehaven Memorial Garden, one for me and one I'd signed with Daniel's name, the way I had last year.

Today was the second anniversary of June's death.

In my coat pocket, the little wooden moon bumped against my hip with every step. It had been her favorite toy in the NICU, the only thing she'd ever closed her tiny fingers around. Her name was carved on the back in letters I'd sanded smooth myself.

I'd brought a sponge and a bottle of water. I wanted to clean her stone with my own hands, then set the moon beside it so she'd have something to hold.

Halfway up the path, I heard drills.

Then metal clanging against metal, and a man shouting about cables.

I lifted my head. A huge arch of white roses rose over the children's section, planted right in front of the row where June was buried. Pink satin ribbons littered the wet grass. Someone had left champagne flutes stacked on a folding table near the hedge.

My fingers tightened around the lilies until the stems bent.

When I was seven months pregnant, Daniel used to lie on the couch with his cheek pressed against my belly, talking to her like she could already answer.

"I promise I'll protect you both," he'd told her once, laughing when she kicked him. "Nothing matters more than my girls."

Today he hadn't called me once.

I walked faster.

June's headstone wasn't where it was supposed to be.

It was strapped onto a metal dolly at the edge of the path, tilted on its side, mud still clinging to the bottom. Where it had stood, there was only a rectangle of dark, wet earth pressed into the shape of its base. The grave itself hadn't been touched. Somehow that made it worse, like she'd been left lying there uncovered.

"Careful with the roses on the left," a woman's voice called. "They need to frame the couple, not block them."

Celeste Moreau stood in the middle of it all in a fitted white dress, a site plan rolled in one hand. My husband's oldest friend. The woman Daniel always said was like a sister to him.

A bronze key hung from a ribbon around her wrist.

I knew that key. This section of Rosehaven was private, locked for the families who'd paid for plots here. Daniel and I had two copies. One was on my keychain. The other was supposed to be in the drawer of his desk.

"And that thing goes," Celeste told the worker by the dolly, pointing at June's stone with the rolled paper. "Not to the side. All the way out, back by the maintenance shed or something."

"Ma'am, we were told temporary—"

"I don't want a dead baby's name showing up in my engagement photos." She smiled at him. "Julian's family flew in for this. It needs to be perfect."

Two years. Two years of Daniel saying he couldn't come with me. He had meetings. He had a headache. He thought it was unhealthy for me to keep coming here. And somehow, every time Celeste's car broke down or her landlord gave her trouble, he found the hours.

Every one of those absences lined up behind that key on her wrist.

I dropped the lilies and ran.

"Stop!" I grabbed the edge of the headstone with both hands. The granite was cold and gritty under my palms. "Put it back. Put it back right now."

The worker stepped away from the dolly, hands raised.

Celeste moved in front of me, her face falling into something soft and wounded. "Isabella. Oh my God, I didn't know you'd be here today."

"It's her anniversary. Of course I'm here."

"I'm only borrowing the space for a few hours." Her lower lip trembled. "Daniel said it would be fine. I'd never do anything to hurt you."

"Isabella?"

Daniel was coming down from the gazebo in a navy suit I'd never seen before. For half a second, relief went through me so hard my knees nearly gave. He'd stop this. Whatever else he'd done, he'd stop this.

"Daniel, it's June's day." My voice cracked. "They pulled up her stone. Tell them to put it back."

He looked at the dolly. Then at Celeste.

Then he took my arm and pulled me away from the headstone.

"Not now," he said quietly. "This is Celeste's special day. Don't make a scene."

"A scene?" I yanked free and grabbed the stone again. "That's our daughter's name!"

"Isabella, you're embarrassing everyone."

"I don't care."

Celeste stepped close, and I saw her hands come up. She put both palms flat against the top of the stone and shoved, leaning her whole weight into it.

The headstone slid off the edge of the dolly.

It hit the stone steps with a crack like a gunshot. A split ran straight through the middle and the two halves fell apart, one rolling onto its back in the wet grass.

The break went right through June's name.

I was on my knees before I knew I'd moved. I grabbed at the pieces, trying to push them together, and the jagged edge sliced across my fingers. Blood ran into the carved letters.

Daniel didn't reach for me.

He reached for Celeste, both hands on her shoulders, turning her toward him. "Are you hurt? Did anything hit you?"

"I'm fine." She pressed a hand to her chest. "It just slipped. Isabella was pulling on it so hard."

"You pushed it," I said. "I watched you push it."

Daniel's hand stayed on Celeste's shoulder. He looked down at me like I was something spilled.

"It's just a gravestone, Isabella. Our daughter isn't coming back."

I stared at him.

Then I looked down and kept trying. I lined up the halves of the J, the N, the E. But the crack had gone straight through the U, and the two sides wouldn't meet anymore. There was a gap where a chip of granite had turned to powder.

Two years ago, I woke up in a hospital bed with staples across my stomach and blood dried on my arms. The first thing I did was put my hand on my belly, searching for her heartbeat. It took a nurse three tries to make me understand she was in the NICU. It took June eleven days to leave.

The scar under my sweater pulled tight as I bent over the stone.

"Do you remember how small she was?" I asked him.

Daniel didn't answer.

"She fit in your hand. You held her in one hand, Daniel. Do you remember that?"

"Stop." His jaw tightened. "Stop using her to humiliate Celeste. It's been two years."

Celeste crouched beside me with a tissue, careful to keep her dress off the mud. "Here. You're bleeding." Her voice was gentle, the way you talk to a child. "I'll pay for a new one. Something prettier. Marble, maybe, with a little angel on top. Wouldn't that be nicer?"

Behind her, the rose arch had finished going up. Gold letters hung from the center.

Celeste & Julian.

They'd hung it right where my daughter's name used to stand.

I didn't take the tissue. I picked up the piece of stone with JU carved into it and held it against my chest. It was heavy and cold, and my blood smeared across the front of my coat.

I stood up slowly.

The wooden moon was still in my pocket. I put my hand over it, then reached for my left hand and worked my wedding ring over the knuckle. My fingers were slick, and it came off easier than I expected.

Daniel saw what I was doing and held out his hand, probably to stop me.

I set the ring in his palm.

"You don't have to pretend anymore," I said. "You don't have to act like a husband who loves me. Not from now on."

"Isabella, don't be dramatic—"

"You didn't just let her break our daughter's grave, Daniel." I held the piece of stone tighter. "You broke the last thing keeping me here."

He closed his fist around the ring. For a moment, something moved in his face, and I waited to see if he'd come after me.

He didn't.

I turned and started down the steps with June's name in my arms.

Behind me, Celeste raised her voice to the workers.

"The pieces too. Every last one of them. The photographers can't have any of that debris in the shot."

I stopped on the step.

"Daniel?" she asked sweetly. "That's okay, right?"

"Yeah," my husband said. "Clear it all out."
