Rejected Omega's Ascent Chapter 1

I gasped awake, my heart hammering against my ribs as consciousness crashed over me like a tidal wave. For a moment, I couldn't remember where I was—the narrow cot with its threadbare blanket, the gray stone walls, the small window letting in the first light of dawn. The omega quarters. Silvercrest Pack.

But how?

I pressed my palms against my temples, trying to make sense of the conflicting sensations. The phantom pain of my death still lingered—silver poison burning through my veins, Lucien's cruel laughter echoing in my ears as he revealed his betrayal through our fading mind-link.

"It was all planned, Victoria. All of it."

Yet here I was, alive. Gloriously, impossibly alive.

I glanced at the small mirror across the room, catching sight of my reflection. Eighteen. Today was my eighteenth birthday—the day of my Coming-of-Age Ceremony. The day I would officially recognize Lucien as my fated mate.

The day before everything went wrong.

A shaft of sunlight broke through the clouds and struck my face, warm and bright. The moment it touched my skin, a strange calm washed over me. My breathing slowed as my vision blurred at the edges.

The Moon Goddess had heard my suffering.

Two visions materialized before me with crystal clarity. In the first, I saw myself accepting Lucien's mark, my head bowed in submission. I watched as Layla took her place as Luna while I lived in shadows, isolated and ashamed. I felt my wolf remain dormant, trapped beneath layers of trauma. And finally, I saw my death—Lucien's cold eyes as he left me to die alone.

In the second vision, I stood tall beside a shadowy figure whose eyes gleamed silver in the darkness. Lycan King Dominic Blackthorne. North America's most powerful wolf. In this vision, my wolf awakened with unprecedented strength, my back straightened with dignity restored.

Two paths. Two destinies.

The choice was mine.

---

Hours later, I balanced a heavy silver tray of crystal glasses as I prepared the banquet hall for tonight's ceremony. My hands trembled slightly—not from the weight, but from the enormity of my decision.

"Victoria."

Lucien's voice slid over me like oil on water. I turned slowly, careful not to spill anything.

He stood in the doorway, tall and commanding in his ceremonial Alpha attire. His dark hair was perfectly styled, his jawline sharp enough to cut glass. Behind him, Layla lingered, her fingers possessively wrapped around his arm.

"You're working hard," he said, his tone falsely benevolent. "The ceremony tonight will be... interesting."

He stepped closer, reaching out to touch my arm. The moment his skin met mine, a jolt of the mate bond sparked between us—a preview of what would fully manifest tonight.

Instead of warmth or belonging, I felt nausea rising in my throat.

"You should rest before tonight," he continued, oblivious to my reaction. "It's not every day a wolfless omega discovers her fate."

Layla's laugh tinkled like breaking glass. "Though we all know what that fate will be, don't we? Back to the shadows where you belong."

She leaned in, her voice dropping to a stage whisper meant for nearby pack members to hear. "Poor Victoria. Still hoping Lucien will notice you? Still pretending you're worthy of being his true Luna?"

I gripped the tray tighter until my knuckles turned white, using the pain to anchor myself. In my previous life, this moment had broken me. Now, it strengthened my resolve.

"I'll finish my duties," I said quietly, meeting Lucien's gaze without flinching.

Something in my eyes must have unsettled him. He frowned slightly before guiding Layla away.

---

The moon rose full and bright over the ceremonial clearing. Pack members gathered in concentric circles around the stone dais where Lucien waited. His eyes found mine across the crowd, confident and expectant.

The Alpha Elder stepped forward. "Tonight, we witness the blessing of the Moon Goddess as she reveals her chosen pairs. Victoria Warren, step forward."

My heart thundered as I moved through the crowd. This was the moment everything changed.

"Lucien Hayes has sensed the call of the mate bond," the Elder continued. "The bond that will strengthen our pack and secure our future."

Lucien extended his hand toward me, his smile triumphant. "Victoria Warren, I claim you as—"

"I reject you."

The words rang out clear and cold across the suddenly silent clearing.

"I, Victoria Warren, reject you, Lucien Hayes, as my fated mate."

Gasps erupted around us. Lucien's face froze in shock.

"Our bond ends here," I continued, each word precise and cutting.

I stepped backward, creating physical distance between us. The partial bond that had formed snapped like a rubber band pulled too tight.

Lucien clutched his chest, his eyes wide with confusion and the first flicker of real pain.

"What have you done?" he whispered, but I was already turning away, my choice made.

Behind me, I heard the first crack in his perfect façade—the beginning of eight years of torment that would consume him completely.

And I felt nothing but freedom.
