Rejected by My Mate After His Mistress Burned My Healing Den Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

Not completely. Not yet. But I felt it crack—a hairline fracture running through the mark on my neck like ice spreading across glass. I was standing in the healing den doorway with Ash curled at my feet, his small wolf body warm against my ankle, when I saw her.

London Edwards stepped through Ironveil's gates in white furs that caught the gray autumn light like snow. Her hair was pale gold, swept over one shoulder. Her smile was soft and practiced. And Christian—my mate, my Alpha, the man I'd spent ten years rebuilding from ruin—crossed the courtyard to meet her with his hand already extended.

I watched him take her hand. Watched him bow his head slightly, a gesture of welcome he hadn't offered me in years. My wolf surged inside my chest, a low warning growl vibrating through my ribs, but I held still. Ash lifted his head and whined softly, sensing the tension in my body.

"It's fine," I murmured to him, running my fingers through his fur. "It's just a guest."

But when Christian passed me that evening on his way to the pack house, I caught it. White orchid. The scent was deliberate, layered thick over his natural pine-and-iron, like perfume rubbed into skin. My wolf slammed against my ribs so hard I had to grip the doorframe to stay upright.

Christian didn't notice. He didn't even look at me.

"Christian." My voice came out steady. Calm. The healer's voice I'd trained for a decade. "Can we talk?"

He stopped, but he didn't turn around. "I have a council meeting in ten minutes."

"It won't take long." I stepped forward, Ash trailing at my heels. "I need to discuss the border patrol reallocation. You've pulled sixteen warriors off the eastern perimeter to serve as personal guard for—"

"For our guest," he cut in, finally turning to face me. His expression was flat. Distant. "London Edwards is here under an old alliance debt. Her safety is a matter of pack diplomacy."

"Sixteen warriors is excessive for a single guest." I kept my tone even, factual. "The eastern border has been vulnerable since the rogue war. If we—"

"Seraphina." His voice dropped into that clipped, authoritative tone he used to end conversations. "Pack diplomacy is above your station. You're a healer. Focus on your herbs."

The words landed like a slap.

I stared at him. At the mate I'd known for ten years. At the Alpha whose pack I'd rebuilt stone by stone, alliance by alliance, while he sat in his study and nursed his shame. He'd never invoked my origins before. Not once. Not in a decade.

The bond-mark on my neck burned cold.

My wolf didn't growl this time. She went silent. Utterly, dangerously silent.

"Understood," I said quietly.

Christian nodded once and walked away. The white orchid scent lingered in the hallway long after he was gone.

Ash pressed his nose into my palm. I crouched down and buried my face in his fur, breathing in his clean puppy scent—earth and woodsmoke and home. He licked my cheek once, twice, and I let myself hold him for a moment longer than I should have.

Then I stood up, smoothed my skirt, and went back to the healing den. There were wounds to tend. There were always wounds to tend.

Over the next three days, London inserted herself into Ironveil like a blade sliding between ribs.

She attended warrior training, standing at the edge of the sparring ring in a pale blue dress that made her look fragile and out of place. The warriors slowed their strikes when she was watching, as if her presence demanded gentleness. She sat beside Christian at every pack meal, laughing softly at his remarks, touching his arm with delicate fingers. She hosted informal gatherings in the west wing—tea, wine, quiet conversations I was never invited to.

I returned from the healing den late one evening, my hands still smelling of yarrow and calendula, to find my usual seat at the Alpha's table occupied. London sat in my chair, her white orchid perfume thick in the air. My own chair had been moved to the far end of the table, near the Omegas.

No one said anything. No one met my eyes.

I sat down without a word. Poured water into my glass. Cut my meat into small, precise pieces. Ash sat at my feet under the table, his warmth the only thing anchoring me to the present moment.

Christian didn't look at me once.

But London did. Just once. A brief, sidelong glance, her pale eyes assessing. Her lips curved into the faintest smile before she turned back to Christian and said something that made him laugh—a low, genuine sound I hadn't heard in months.

My wolf stirred. Not a growl. Not yet.

A warning.

I finished my meal in silence, excused myself, and left the hall with Ash at my heels. The bond-mark on my neck burned cold the entire walk back to my quarters. I pressed my fingers against it, feeling the chill spread through my skin like frost.

In my room, I lit a single candle and sat on the edge of my bed. Ash curled up beside me, his small body warm and solid. I ran my hand over his fur, counting his breaths, grounding myself in the rhythm.

Tomorrow I would go back to the healing den. I would tend wounds. I would mix tinctures. I would do what I had always done.

But tonight, for the first time in ten years, I let myself wonder what would happen if I stopped.
