Rejected Mate Finds Her Power Chapter 1

The whispers hit me like silver bullets to the chest.

"Did you hear? Alpha Myles marked Diana Carter last night."

"Three days after she returned, and he's already chosen her over his fated mate."

"Poor Alyssa. The Moon Goddess must be furious."

I stood frozen in the pack house kitchen, the ceramic mug slipping from my trembling fingers to shatter against the stone floor. The sound echoed through the sudden silence as every pair of eyes turned toward me—some filled with pity, others with barely concealed satisfaction at witnessing my humiliation.

My wolf, Silver, let out a bone-deep howl that reverberated through my very soul. The pain was unlike anything I'd ever experienced, worse than the silver-laced whips rogues had used during border skirmishes, worse than the agony of losing my parents in the pack war. This was the tearing of something sacred, something the Moon Goddess herself had woven between Myles and me.

"That can't be true," I whispered, my voice barely audible above the thundering of my heart. But even as the words left my lips, I could feel it—the mate bond that had once thrummed with warmth and promise now felt cold, tainted by another's mark.

Ignoring the stares and whispered speculation, I fled the kitchen and rushed to our shared quarters. The familiar scent of pine and leather that had always meant home now carried something else—the cloying sweetness of moonflower, Diana's signature perfume. It made my stomach churn.

I pressed my back against the closed door and reached out through our mind-link, the connection that had been my anchor for three years.

*Myles,* I called desperately. *Tell me it's not true. Tell me you didn't—*

His mental voice cut through mine like ice. *Alyssa.* There was no warmth, no trace of the man who had once whispered sweet promises against my skin. *We need to talk.*

*You marked her.* It wasn't a question. The evidence was written in the sudden distance I felt, the way our bond felt fractured and wrong. *Three days, Myles. She's been back for three days and you've already—*

*Diana needs my protection.* His tone was clipped, matter-of-fact, as if he were discussing pack security rather than destroying our destined bond. *She's been through hell, Alyssa. Her pack was destroyed, she has no one else. You should understand what that feels like.*

The casual cruelty of using my own tragic past against me left me breathless. *I am your fated mate,* I managed, my mental voice breaking. *The Moon Goddess chose us. Our ceremony is in one month—*

*The ceremony is postponed indefinitely.* Each word was a dagger to my heart. *Diana is my chosen mate now. You need to understand your place in this pack.*

My place. As if I were some omega to be shuffled around at his convenience, not the woman who had stood by his side through every challenge, who had soothed his wolf during the brutal trials to prove his worth as Alpha.

*Myles, please.* I hated how desperate I sounded, but I couldn't stop myself. *What we have is sacred. You can't just throw it away for—*

The mind-link snapped shut with such force that I cried out, stumbling backward as the mental connection that had been my lifeline for three years was severed. The silence in my head was deafening, more terrifying than any rogue's howl.

Before I could process what had happened, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway. The door burst open without ceremony, and two pack guards stepped inside—Marcus and Joel, wolves I'd known since childhood, now avoiding my gaze as they carried out their Alpha's orders.

"Miss George," Marcus said quietly, his voice thick with reluctance. "Alpha's orders. You're to gather your belongings and move to the basement quarters immediately."

The basement. Where omegas and unmated wolves lived. Where pack members who had fallen from grace were sent to contemplate their failures.

"This is my home," I whispered, looking around the room that held three years of memories. The bed where Myles had held me through nightmares about my parents' deaths. The window seat where we'd planned our future. The dresser where I kept the last photographs of my mother and father, the only remnants of my destroyed pack.

"Not anymore," Joel said, though he had the decency to look ashamed. "Diana Carter will be moving in tonight. Alpha wants you out within the hour."

Silver whimpered in my mind, a sound of pure anguish that made my knees buckle. I gripped the doorframe to keep from collapsing as the full weight of my new reality crashed over me. In the span of a single conversation, I had gone from future Luna to displaced pack member, from cherished mate to inconvenient reminder of a bond Myles no longer wanted.

The guards waited in uncomfortable silence as I mechanically gathered my few possessions. My hands shook as I carefully wrapped my parents' photographs, the glass frames reflecting my tear-streaked face. These pictures were all I had left of the Silvermoon Pack, of the life I'd lost as a child. Now I was losing everything all over again.

As I descended the stairs toward the basement, clutching my meager belongings, I could hear Diana's musical laughter echoing from the main hall. She was already making herself at home, already claiming what had been mine.

The basement room was small and cold, with a narrow window that barely let in any light. As I set my parents' photographs on the single wooden dresser, Silver's anguished howls finally broke free, echoing through the pack house like a funeral dirge for everything we had lost.
