The Rejected Charity Case's Spectacular Billionaire Comeback Chapter 1

The cold rain fell like a curtain.

It pressed a few strands of Anya Montgomery's dark hair against her face as she watched her only suitcase crash into the roadside. The cheap plastic lock cracked from the impact.

A few old sweaters and a pair of faded jeans lay scattered on the damp asphalt road, a public execution of her poverty.

Veronica Sharp stood on the covered porch, arms crossed. Her expensive silk robe remained untouched by the storm. Her expression was one of calm, calculated victory.

"You have two choices," Veronica's voice pierced the torrential rain, sharp and harsh. "Marry Mr. Price, or get out of my house."

Anya's gaze passed over the woman and landed on the magnificent villa behind her. She had lived there for ten years—ten years of enslavement disguised as charity. She had never felt at home there.

The argument from minutes earlier echoed in her ears. Veronica's face was contorted with rage when Anya refused to be sold to a forty-year-old man infamous for the mysterious deaths of his previous wives.

Anya bit her lower lip and tasted the metallic flavor of blood.

Her voice was soft, yet carried a chilling resolve. "I won't choose either."

The defiance in her eyes ignited Veronica's fury. "Mrs. Davis!" she screamed at the expressionless butler, "Throw all her rubbish out! I don't want to see a single trace of her in this house!"

Anya didn't say another word. She knelt on the damp ground, her movements calm and composed. She picked up the scattered clothes one by one, neatly folding them despite the rain soaking through her thin jacket. Her fingers were numb with cold.

As she reached for the last item, her hand touched a small, empty velvet box inside the suitcase.

Her heart sank. A chilling fear, even greater than the rain, swept over her.

She immediately knew what was missing.

Her mother's only keepsake: an antique brooch shaped like a butterfly.

It was the only clue to her identity, the last tangible thing from that period of her life that she could barely remember.

Anya abruptly stood up. Her usually calm, icy blue eyes now burned with a fierce light. She stared directly at Veronica.

Where is my brooch?

Veronica scoffed. "Which piece of junk are you talking about? How would I know? Maybe some maid threw it away with the trash."

Anya clenched her fists tightly. Her nails dug deep into her palms, sending a sharp, piercing pain that brought her back to her senses. She was absolutely certain that the brooch would not be mistaken for trash.

Her thoughts raced, replaying the events of the past few days. The last time she saw it was on her dressing table, before Fallon came into her room to "borrow" a scarf.

She didn't argue further. Words were useless to a woman like Veronica.

She closed her damaged suitcase, the latch almost giving way beneath her. Dragging it, she left the house without looking back. The rain, like a welcoming curtain, washed away the past decade.

"She'll be back," Veronica said to Mrs. Davis, her voice filled with disdain. "She'll be begging me for help within three days. Remember my words."

Anya hesitated for a moment, but she did not stop.

She pulled an old, cracked smartphone from her pocket. The screen lit up, displaying an unread message.

"Anya, we've found you. —C"

Her thumb hovered over the message for a moment, then she deleted it. It was a ghost from the past she couldn't afford to believe in. Not yet.

She won't go anywhere until she finds her brooch.

Rain mingled with the silent tears streaming down her cheeks, but her gaze remained as hard as iron. She dragged her suitcase toward the main road, the heavy iron gates of the community slowly closing behind her.

At the security post, Officer Jones watched the scene with great curiosity, already gossiping with his colleagues about the latest farce in the Sharp family.

Anya flagged down a passing taxi.

She gave the driver the address of a cheap motel on the other side of the city.

The motel room was suffocatingly small, filled with the smells of stale cigarettes and bleach. She pushed open the bathroom door and looked at the pale, thin girl in the mirror. Ten years. She could have stayed in any hotel that required a doorman to open the glass door—the encrypted black card hidden in a compartment of her suitcase would have been enough to keep her in a penthouse suite for a whole year. But she didn't. She couldn't let the Sharp family know she had any independent financial means. Until she got the brooch back, she had to be that "poor wretched one kicked out."

She opened a hidden compartment in her suitcase and found an encrypted satellite phone completely separate from her main phone. On the screen lay an unread message from a contact saved only under the code name "C":

"You've finally left. I'll be there when you're ready."

She didn't reply. It's not the right time yet.

She turned off her phone and turned her gaze to the city skyline in the night outside the window. She had been a ghost in that house for ten years. It was time to make use of it.

As the car drove away, she looked out the window at the luxurious mansion in the gated community gradually disappearing into the distance, like a chapter in her life that finally, abruptly, closed.

She opened her worn wallet. There was less than a hundred dollars inside.

Her entire fortune.

She took a deep breath, her body trembling slightly. Fear, like a cold knot, coiled in her stomach, but something else was rising to fight it off. A sharp and dangerous resolve.

The game, she thought, had only just begun.
