Rejected by the Heir,Claimed by the Alpha King Chapter 1

Inez POV:

"Inez, are you quite finished with your pathetic little display?"

The wind off the jagged cliff edge was razor-sharp, driving the sea spray against my face like needles. My dress clung to my legs like an icy shroud, but the freezing air was nothing compared to the deadening cold expanding behind my ribs.

My fiancé, Damien Kensington, stood less than ten paces away. His striking golden hair was tossed by the gale, his sharp blue eyes offering no warmth—only deep, disgusted impatience.

"Step back from the ledge this instant," he commanded, his tone dripping with aristocratic authority. "You are making an absolute spectacle of yourself."

Tucked snugly against his side was my half-sister, Luna Jones. Her delicate frame trembled, every line of her posture engineered to project frail innocence. She tilted her face upward—the very face that had successfully weaponized the sympathy of our entire household for years—and allowed tears to spill over her pale cheeks.

"Sister, please... don't do this," Luna sobbed, her voice fluttering in the wind. "It's all my fault. I shouldn't have been so frail... I shouldn't have let Damien comfort me in your chambers. Don't blame him! Please, if someone must jump, let it be me!"

A dry, bitter laugh escaped my throat. It sounded broken, like dry leaves scraping across stone. "Comfort you? Luna, I didn't walk in on him holding your hand. I walked in on the two of you in my bed."

Damien's handsome composure cracked, his eyes narrowing into venomous slits. He took an authoritative step forward. "Watch your tongue, Inez. As the future matriarch of the Kensington name, such vulgar language is entirely beneath you."

"The future matriarch?" I stared straight through his polished facade, my burning eyes refusing to shed a single tear. "Are you referring to me, Damien? Or the woman currently pressing her chest against your arm?"

He flinched. For a fraction of a second, his eyes cut away toward the crashing waves below. That single moment of cowardice cut deeper than any blade.

Luna's weeping conveniently escalated into desperate hitches. She tugged frantically at Damien's silk sleeve. "Damien, don't fight with her because of me! Sister has every right to hate me... I'll leave! I'll go into exile!"

"You will do no such thing," Damien murmured softly, his hand dropping to rest tenderly over hers—a soft, gentle touch he had never once offered me in our ten years of betrothal. He looked back up at me, his eyes hardening into flint. "She is being completely hysterical."

Hysterical.

I looked at them standing together beneath the bruised gray sky. The man I had poured my youth into loving, and the sister I had shared my home with. They looked like a tragic painting of devoted lovers, while I was framed as the madwoman disrupting their romance.

Deep inside my chest, the final thread holding my shattered heart together snapped.

Memory after memory rushed through my mind—every childhood toy Luna had quietly claimed, every drop of our father's affection she had stolen with fake tears, every time Damien had scolded me for my 'jealousy' whenever I caught them whispering in shadowed corridors. It hadn't been my imagination. It had been an execution in slow motion.

A profound, absolute calm settled over me, colder than the dark ocean churning hundreds of feet below.

I took a step backward.

The heel of my slipper met empty air. Loose pebbles rattled off the sheer rock wall, plunging into the violent abyss below.

Damien's face drained of color. "Inez! Don't you dare defy me!" he roared.

There was no grief in his voice. Only the fury of a master whose property was disobeying him.

Luna screamed, covering her face—but through the slight gap in her pale fingers, I caught it. A sharp, gleeful flash of utter triumph.

That single look set me completely free.

I smiled at them—a slow, genuine smile of pure liberation.

"Damien," my voice drifted over the roaring gale, entirely untethered. "You're free."

I spread my arms like a bird plunging into a tempest and leaned backward into the void.

The rush of air deafened me as gravity claimed my body. For a split second, I saw Damien's face contort in genuine panic as he lunged over the ledge, his fingers clawing at empty air. I heard Luna's screech turn shrill and real.

Then, impact. The ocean struck me like a solid sheet of iron. Shocking, bone-shattering agony tore through my ribcage and lungs before absolute darkness dragged me down into the deep.

It's over, my dying mind whispered into the blackness. Finally.

My life slipped away into the freezing depths, my limbs turning heavy as lead. But just as my consciousness touched the edge of permanent oblivion, an impossible, blazing heat erupted from the core of my soul.

It surged through my cold veins like molten gold.

And then came the flood—not of my short, pathetic life, but of ancient knowledge. Visions of sacred herbs, deadly poisons, blood-sealing needles, and a terrifying, forgotten power known as the Spirit-touched.
