Chapter 2

My quarters felt like a sanctuary after the chaos of the preparation hall. The moment I closed the door behind me, my legs gave out, and I sank onto my bed, trembling from the aftershocks of breaking the mate bond. The pain was excruciating—like someone had torn my soul in half—but beneath it burned something I hadn't felt in three years: freedom.

Lyra paced restlessly in my mind, her silver fur bristling with residual fury. *Finally,* she growled. *I thought you'd never come to your senses.*

"I should have listened to you sooner," I whispered, pressing my palms against my temples as another wave of bond-breaking pain crashed over me.

*Now we tell Father. Now we show them who we really are.*

I took a shuddering breath and reached out through the mind-link, feeling for the familiar warmth of my father's presence. Alpha William Murphy's mental voice came through immediately, tinged with concern.

*Bella? What's wrong? Your emotional state is... turbulent.*

*Father,* I began, my mental voice stronger than it had been in years. *I need to tell you something. About Anakin. About everything.*

I laid it all out—Hope's deliberate sabotage, Anakin's immediate dismissal of my accusations, his cruel suggestion that Hope replace me at the ceremony. With each detail, I felt my father's anger building through our connection, a controlled fury that reminded me exactly whose daughter I was.

*That arrogant whelp,* he snarled when I finished. *I should have known better than to trust Silvercrest with my most precious treasure.*

*I want the alliance terminated,* I said firmly. *I won't be used as a political pawn anymore, and I won't watch our pack's strength prop up his weakness.*

*Consider it done,* he replied without hesitation. *But Bella, you must remain there until the Moon Ceremony. We'll make the announcement then, publicly. It's the only way to maintain our honor while ensuring Silvercrest faces the full consequences of their disrespect.*

*Three more days,* I agreed, though the thought made my stomach clench.

*Can you hold out that long? I can send Quincy—*

*No,* I cut him off quickly. *I need to do this myself. I need to prove I'm strong enough to be your heir.*

There was a pause, then warmth flooded through our connection. *You already have, daughter. You already have.*

I had barely closed the mind-link when my door burst open without so much as a knock. Anakin stormed in, his face a mask of rage and desperation, his brown eyes wild.

"What the hell was that display back there?" he demanded, slamming the door behind him. "Have you lost your mind?"

I stood slowly, letting my newfound Alpha presence fill the room. "I found it, actually. For the first time in three years."

"This is ridiculous, Bella. You're being childish and dramatic over an accident—"

"It wasn't an accident, and you know it." My voice carried the authority I'd suppressed for so long. "But even if it was, your response told me everything I needed to know about what you really think of me."

His expression shifted, desperation creeping in around the edges of his anger. "Look, maybe I was hasty. We can get you a new dress. Hope can step back—"

"No." The word rang with finality. "I'm done, Anakin. Done pretending to be less than I am. Done making myself small so you can feel big."

"You can't just reject our bond over some petty female squabble!" His voice cracked, revealing the panic beneath his bluster. "We have a future planned. The alliance between our packs—"

"The alliance is over." I watched his face go white. "My father and I discussed it. It will be announced at the Moon Ceremony."

For a moment, he just stared at me, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. Then his face twisted with fury, and I saw the true Anakin—the weak, insecure man who needed to control others to feel powerful.

"Guards!" he bellowed.

Two Delta wolves appeared in my doorway immediately, their expressions uncomfortable but obedient.

"Confine Miss Bella to her quarters until she comes to her senses," Anakin ordered coldly. "She's clearly not thinking clearly and needs time to reconsider her... tantrum."

The Deltas exchanged uncertain glances. "Alpha, she's the Moonstone Alpha's daughter—"

"She's MY mate, and she'll do as I say," Anakin snarled, his eyes flashing. "Guard her door. No one in or out without my permission."

As the door closed behind him, I heard the distinct sound of a lock clicking into place. Lyra's rage exploded through me, but I forced myself to remain calm. This was exactly the kind of behavior that would justify everything that was coming.

I was no longer just an angry ex-fiancée. I was a prisoner.

And that changed everything.

Evening fell like a heavy curtain over Silvercrest territory. I had spent the day pacing my quarters like a caged wolf, which, I supposed, was exactly what I was now. The two Delta guards remained stationed outside my door, their scents carrying discomfort and unease through the wooden barrier.

A soft knock interrupted my brooding. "Miss Bella?" Hope's voice drifted through the door, sickeningly sweet. "May I come in? I brought tea. I thought we should talk."

Every instinct screamed danger, but curiosity won out. What game was she playing now?

The door opened, and Hope glided in carrying a silver tea service, flanked by my Delta guards. She'd changed into a flowing white dress—no doubt practicing for her stolen role in the ceremony.

"I wanted to apologize," she said, setting the tray on my small table. "And to explain."

"Explain what? How you deliberately ruined my dress?"

Hope's mask of innocence never wavered as she poured two cups of steaming tea. "I brought chamomile. It's supposed to be calming." She held out a delicate porcelain cup. "Please, Bella. Let's try to find some peace between us."

The tea smelled divine—floral and soothing. Despite my suspicions, I found myself accepting the cup. Maybe it was exhaustion from the day's emotional upheaval, or maybe some part of me still wanted to believe Hope could be reasoned with.

I took a sip, then another. The warm liquid seemed to ease the tension in my shoulders.

"You see?" Hope smiled, settling into the chair across from me. "We can be civilized about this."

But as the minutes passed, a strange lethargy began creeping through my limbs. My eyelids grew heavy, and my thoughts seemed to move through thick honey.

"What..." I tried to set down my cup, but my fingers wouldn't cooperate properly.

Hope's sweet expression melted away like sugar in rain, replaced by something cold and triumphant. "Oh, Bella. Did you really think I'd let you ruin everything I've worked for?"

The tea cup slipped from my numb fingers, shattering against the floor. I tried to stand, to call for help, but my body wouldn't obey.

"The guards are loyal to Anakin," Hope continued conversationally, rising from her chair to pace around me like a predator circling wounded prey. "And Anakin is loyal to me now. Amazing what a little sympathy and understanding can accomplish."

"You..." My tongue felt thick and clumsy.

"Drugged you? Just a mild sedative. Nothing that will hurt you permanently." Her green eyes glittered with malicious satisfaction. "I just need you quiet and compliant while I take my rightful place as Luna of this pack."

I slumped forward in my chair, fighting the drug's effects with every ounce of willpower I possessed. Lyra snarled weakly in my mind, her strength muted by whatever poison Hope had fed me.

"You were always the obstacle," Hope continued, her voice taking on a dreamy quality. "The precious Alpha's daughter with her perfect bloodline and her perfect future. But you threw it all away, didn't you? And now it's mine."

The room began to spin as consciousness slipped away from me like water through my fingers. The last thing I saw was Hope's triumphant smile as she bent down to whisper in my ear.

"Sweet dreams, Bella. When you wake up, I'll be Luna, and you'll be nothing."

Chapter 3

Consciousness returned to me in fragments—cold air biting at my skin, the musty scent of abandoned wood, and the sharp bite of rope cutting into my wrists. My head throbbed with the lingering effects of whatever Hope had slipped into that cursed tea, and when I tried to move, I discovered my hands were bound behind my back, secured to what felt like a wooden chair.

The hunting cabin materialized around me as my vision cleared. Dust motes danced in shafts of moonlight streaming through cracked windows, and the air carried the stale smell of disuse. This wasn't Silvercrest territory—the scents were all wrong, unfamiliar. We were somewhere on the border, in the no-man's land between packs.

"Finally awake, sleeping beauty?"

Hope's voice cut through the silence like a blade. She emerged from the shadows, still wearing that pristine white dress, her blonde hair catching the moonlight as she moved with predatory grace. But gone was any pretense of sweetness. Her green eyes glittered with malicious triumph, and her smile was all sharp edges.

"Comfortable?" she asked, settling into a chair across from me like we were having tea instead of... whatever this was. "I made sure the ropes weren't too tight. I'm not completely heartless."

I tested my bonds, feeling the coarse rope bite deeper into my skin. Lyra stirred weakly in my mind, still sluggish from the drugs. "You're insane if you think you can get away with this."

"Oh, but I already have." Hope leaned forward, her voice dropping to an intimate whisper. "Do you want to know how long I've been planning this? How many nights I've lain awake, imagining this exact moment?"

She stood and began pacing around my chair, her fingers trailing along the dusty furniture as she moved. "Three years, Bella. Three years of watching you waste everything I would have killed for. The perfect mate, the perfect position, the perfect life—and you threw it all away because of a little spilled wine."

"It wasn't about the wine, and you know it."

"Wasn't it?" Hope's laugh was sharp and bitter. "Poor little Alpha princess, so used to getting her way that one tiny setback sends her into a tantrum. Do you have any idea what some of us would give for what you just discarded?"

She stopped in front of me, crouching down until we were eye level. "I grew up in a two-room shack with parents who could barely afford to feed me. While you were learning pack politics and Alpha protocols, I was scrubbing floors and taking orders from wolves who thought they were better than me just because of their bloodlines."

The raw hatred in her voice made my skin crawl. "So you decided to destroy someone else's life instead of building your own?"

"I decided to take what should have been mine from the beginning." She straightened, smoothing down her dress with deliberate care. "Anakin never loved you, you know. Not really. He loved the idea of you—the political alliance, the status of having an Alpha's daughter as his mate. But me? I see him for who he really is, and I love him anyway."

"You don't love him," I said quietly. "You love what he represents. The title, the power, the escape from whatever you're running from."

Her hand cracked across my cheek before I could blink, the sound echoing through the cabin. "Don't you dare psychoanalyze me, you spoiled bitch. You had everything handed to you on a silver platter, and you threw it away because your precious feelings got hurt."

I tasted blood where my teeth had cut the inside of my cheek, but I kept my voice steady. "Where are the guards who brought me here?"

"Dismissed. This is between us now." Hope resumed her pacing, her movements becoming more agitated. "I've spent years perfecting this plan. Every sympathetic smile, every 'accidental' encounter, every moment I spent building trust with Anakin while you were too arrogant to notice the threat right under your nose."

The cabin door creaked open, and my heart sank as Anakin stepped inside. His brown eyes were cold and calculating as they swept over the scene—me bound to the chair, Hope standing over me like a conquering queen.

"Good," he said simply. "She's awake."

"Did you really think I wouldn't approve of this?" Anakin moved closer, his Alpha presence filling the small space. But where once that presence had made me feel protected, now it felt suffocating and wrong. "You humiliated me in front of my pack, Bella. You rejected our bond and threatened to destroy the alliance that keeps Silvercrest strong."

He crouched down beside Hope, presenting a united front that made my stomach turn. "So we're going to fix this. You're going to accept me as your mate again, publicly, and we're going to pretend this little tantrum never happened."

"And if I refuse?"

Anakin's smile was cold and predatory. "Then I'll mark you anyway. Once my bite is on your neck, the bond will reform whether you want it or not. The Moon Goddess may choose fated mates, but she doesn't interfere with claiming bites."

The threat hung in the air like poison. My blood ran cold as I realized just how far he was willing to go to maintain his control over me.

But somewhere in the darkness beyond the cabin walls, I could have sworn I heard the distant sound of paws against earth, moving fast and getting closer.
