Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the King Chapter 1

The morning light filtered through the curtains of our bedroom, casting golden streaks across the empty space beside me. My hand reached instinctively for Leo's warmth, but found only cold sheets that hadn't been disturbed since I'd fallen asleep alone the night before.

Today marked ten years since we'd completed our mating ceremony. Ten years since the Moon Goddess had blessed our union and Leo had marked me as his Luna. I should have been waking up in his arms, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat against my cheek, breathing in his familiar pine and earth scent that always made my wolf purr with contentment.

Instead, I was alone.

I pressed my palm against the mattress where he should have been, feeling the coolness seep through my fingertips. The mate bond that usually hummed between us like a gentle current felt... distant. Muted. As if someone had wrapped it in thick cotton, dulling the connection that had been our constant companion for a decade.

My wolf stirred uneasily within me, her ears flattening as she sensed my growing concern. *Where is our mate?* she whimpered, her voice echoing my own confusion.

I sat up slowly, my silk nightgown pooling around my waist as I surveyed our bedroom. Everything appeared normal—the mahogany furniture Leo had chosen when we'd built our pack house, the photographs of us throughout the years lining the dresser, the Luna ceremonial necklace he'd given me on our first anniversary resting in its velvet box. Yet something felt fundamentally wrong.

That's when I caught it—a scent that didn't belong.

Floral. Sweet. Distinctly feminine.

My wolf's whimper transformed into a low growl as the foreign fragrance invaded my senses. It clung to the air near Leo's side of the bed, faint but unmistakable. Jasmine and vanilla, with an underlying musk that spoke of intimacy and secrets.

My hands trembled as I threw back the covers and stood, my bare feet silent on the hardwood floor. I followed the scent trail, my wolf's instincts sharpening with each step. It led to Leo's dresser, where his cologne bottles sat undisturbed, but the alien fragrance seemed strongest near his discarded clothes from yesterday.

I lifted his shirt with shaking fingers, bringing it close to my face. The scent hit me like a physical blow—that same floral sweetness woven through the fabric of his clothing like a brand. Like a claim.

*No,* my wolf howled within me, pacing frantically in the confines of my mind. *This cannot be. Our mate would never...*

But the evidence was undeniable. Leo hadn't come home last night. On our anniversary. And he'd been with another she-wolf.

I dropped the shirt as if it had burned me, stumbling backward until my legs hit the edge of our bed. The same bed where we'd made love countless times, where we'd whispered promises and planned our future, where Leo had held me through nightmares and illness with unwavering devotion.

The mate bond between us pulsed weakly, and I tried to reach out to him through our connection, desperate for some explanation, some reassurance that would make sense of this nightmare. But instead of the warm response I'd always received, I felt... resistance. As if he was deliberately blocking me out.

Tears burned my eyes as I sank onto the bed, clutching the sheets that still carried traces of that foreign scent. Today was supposed to be perfect. I'd planned everything—his favorite breakfast, a private ceremony to renew our mating vows, the special dinner I'd been preparing for weeks. I'd even bought new lingerie, hoping to finally talk about starting the family we'd been postponing for his pack expansion plans.

But Leo hadn't even bothered to come home.

My wolf curled into a ball of misery within me, her earlier growls replaced by heartbroken whines. The Luna aura that usually surrounded me like a protective shield felt diminished, flickering like a candle in a storm.

I forced myself to stand, to move to the window and look out at the pack grounds below. Members of our pack were already beginning their daily routines, unaware that their Luna's world was crumbling with the dawn. They trusted Leo and me to be their foundation, their example of what true mate bonds should be.

What would they think if they knew their Alpha had spent their anniversary night with another she-wolf?

The thought made my stomach clench with nausea and shame. I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to hold together the pieces of my heart that felt like they were scattering with each passing moment.

Somewhere in the distance, I heard the rumble of Leo's truck pulling into the driveway. My wolf's ears perked up despite her pain, hope and dread warring within me as his footsteps approached our front door.

I remained frozen by the window, my reflection pale and haunted in the glass, as the sound of his key in the lock echoed through our home like the tolling of a funeral bell.
