Rejected by My Alpha Mate, Claimed by the Lycan King Chapter 1

The funeral ended at 2:47 on a Tuesday afternoon, and I was still breathing.

I stood at the edge of Ironvale territory with my father's casket lowered into ground that didn't belong to me anymore. Packless. Wolfless. The silver brand scar beneath my collar pulsed with every heartbeat, a reminder that some wounds don't close just because five years pass. I touched the fabric reflexively, hiding what everyone here had already seen the night Remington burned it into my skin.

The three Healer Elders flanked me like sentinels. Elder Miriam held my father's mortar in both hands. Elder Thomas carried the clinic ledger against his chest. Elder Cora gripped a small vial of lavender oil my father had distilled the week before the sabotage. They didn't speak. They didn't need to. Their presence said what I couldn't: we remember the truth.

Mourners shifted around us, careful not to meet my eyes. I recognized faces from my father's clinic—wolves he'd healed, children he'd delivered. None of them stepped forward. Pack loyalty runs deeper than gratitude.

Then the scent hit me.

Cedar and smoke. Remington's scent, the one that used to make my wolf sing. Now it just made my scar burn hotter.

He walked through the crowd in human form, and they parted for him like water. Alpha aura rolled off him in waves, that commanding presence that once made me feel safe. Sylvie Morris clung to his arm in a white dress too pristine for a funeral, her smile calibrated for public sympathy. She looked like she was attending a garden party, not burying the man her mate had destroyed.

My wolf stirred. Not awake—it hadn't been awake since the rejection—but restless. A vibration deep in my chest, like something trying to claw its way out of a grave.

Sylvie's heels clicked across the grass. She stopped in front of me, close enough that I could smell the perfume masking something else. Something bitter and green.

"Kaylee." Her voice dripped honey. "I'm so sorry for your loss."

She pressed a gilded envelope into my hand before I could refuse.

"Our Mate Ceremony is next month," she continued, loud enough for the mourners to hear. "We'd be honored if you could attend. It would mean so much to Remington. A gesture of... closure."

The moment my fingers closed around the paper, the scent registered. Faint, but unmistakable. Wolfsbane.

My silver brand flared. Not phantom pain—real pain, searing through the scar tissue like the iron was pressed there again. My hand trembled. The envelope crinkled in my grip.

Sylvie's smile widened.

Behind her, Remington's hand drifted to his chest. To the claw marks I'd left the night I discovered Adrianna's scent on his skin. The scar no wolf healing could erase.

My wolf surged. Not a howl. A vibration, deep and biological, radiating from the branded mark outward. The air around me seemed to thicken. Several mourners stepped back.

I looked down at the invitation. At the gilded script spelling out their names. At the wolfsbane trace deliberately laced into the paper to keep my wolf dormant, to make sure I stayed broken.

I tore it in half.

The sound cut through the silence like a blade. I ripped it again. And again. Gilded pieces scattered at Sylvie's feet, glinting in the afternoon sun.

The mourners went still.

I met Remington's eyes for the first time in five years.

"I, Remington, Alpha of the Ironvale Pack, reject you, Kaylee Johnston, as my mate." My voice came out quiet. Steady. The crowd leaned in. "Those were your words. Before the entire pack. You made me repeat them back to you so the Moon Goddess would hear."

Remington's jaw tightened. His Alpha aura pressed against me, trying to silence me. My knees didn't buckle.

"Then you took a silver brand," I continued, "and pressed it into my fading mark while I screamed. My wolf went silent that night. You made sure of it."

Sylvie's honeyed composure cracked. Her eyes darted to Remington, looking for rescue.

"And before that," I said, turning to address the mourners directly, "you sabotaged my father's clinic. Wolfsbane-laced supplies. Planted evidence. You destroyed a Healer's legacy to clear your path to the Alpha seat."

Elder Thomas stepped forward. He opened the clinic ledger, holding it high. "Margin notations in Beta Crane's handwriting. Supply orders that match Ironvale pack stores."

Elder Miriam raised the mortar. "Wolfsbane residue. Tested and confirmed."

Elder Cora's voice rang clear. "We were there. We saw what happened. And we will testify to any pack that asks."

The elite mourners recoiled. Whispers rippled through the crowd. Remington stood exposed, his curated narrative crumbling before the wolves who had once watched him brand me.

I reached into my coat pocket. My father's tin of expired Healer salve pressed cold against my palm. The only inheritance I had left.

I turned my back on Ironvale territory.

"Kaylee—" Remington's voice cracked.

I didn't look back. The Elders fell into step beside me, their evidence folded carefully in their hands. Behind us, the funeral crowd's murmurs rose like a tide.

My wolf was still restless. Still silent. But for the first time in five years, it felt like something was listening.
