Rejected by My Alpha Mate Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, in front of two hundred witnesses.

I arrived early to surprise him. The torches lining the pack house corridor flickered as I walked toward Liam's private quarters, my heart doing that stupid fluttering thing it always did when I was about to see him. I'd spent the afternoon getting ready—hair pinned up the way he liked, the silver dress he'd picked out himself. Tonight was supposed to crown me Luna. Tonight was supposed to be ours.

Then I caught her scent.

Floral and musky, thick enough to choke on. It saturated the air outside his door like she'd marked the entire hallway. My hand froze on the doorknob. My wolf—the one that had never surfaced, the one everyone said didn't exist—stirred for the first time in my life. Not an awakening. A warning.

I pushed the door open anyway.

Lorelai Dunn was pressed against Liam's chest. His arms were around her. Not holding her away. Just… holding her. Her face was buried in his shirt, his chin resting on top of her head, both of them angled in the posture of comfort I recognized because it used to be mine.

I didn't scream. I didn't move. I just stood there, watching my mate hold another woman in the room where we were supposed to get ready together.

Lorelai lifted her head. Our eyes met over Liam's shoulder.

She smiled.

Then she threw herself backward.

It was theatrical. Violent. She twisted as she fell, her body hitting the stairs with sickening thuds—one, two, three—tumbling down to the landing below. The sound of her scream was worse than the fall itself. High and raw and perfectly calibrated to bring everyone running.

"She pushed me!" Lorelai shrieked from the bottom of the stairs. "She killed my baby!"

Blood appeared. I don't know where it came from—her arm, her leg, somewhere that made it real. Pack members flooded the corridor within seconds. I stood at the top of the stairs with my hands empty, my mouth open, already convicted by a crime I hadn't committed.

Liam arrived before I could form words. He looked at Lorelai bleeding on the floor, then at me standing above her. His eyes went flat. That Alpha certainty I used to find so attractive locked into place, and I watched him decide in real time that I was guilty.

"Liam," I managed. My voice came out small. "I didn't—"

"Don't." He stepped back when I reached for him. Like I was dangerous. Like I was something that might contaminate him.

The pack members parted as he walked past me into the ceremonial hall. I followed because I didn't know what else to do. My legs felt like they belonged to someone else. The mating mark on my neck—the one that had pulsed warm since the night we first recognized each other—went cold.

Two hundred wolves filled the hall. They'd come to witness my crowning. Now they were going to witness something else entirely.

Liam stood on the raised platform where we were supposed to exchange vows. His voice carried to every corner of the room, clear and final.

"I, Liam Voss, Alpha of Shadowveil Pack, reject you, Summer Ashwood, as my mate and Luna."

The mark went from cold to dead.

I felt the bond sever. Not metaphorically. Biologically. Something fundamental tore out of me with enough violence that my knees buckled. I hit the ceremonial ground hard, my body convulsing, a sound ripping from my throat that I didn't recognize as my own. It felt like someone had reached into my chest and yanked out everything that made me whole.

Every wolf in the hall watched me break.

I tried to breathe. Couldn't. Tried to stand. Couldn't. My vision blurred at the edges, my hands clawing at the stone floor for purchase that didn't exist. Somewhere in the back of my awareness, I heard Lorelai's voice, soft and pained, playing the victim for an audience that was eating it up.

My father's boots appeared in my line of sight.

Gamma Abraham Ashwood didn't kneel. Didn't ask if I was okay. He gripped my arm while I was still shaking and hauled me upright with enough force that my shoulder screamed in protest. The pack members moved aside as he dragged me through the hall, out the main doors, into the freezing rain outside.

I collapsed in the mud. He stood over me, his face carved from stone.

"You've shamed this family," he said. Not to me. To the crowd gathering behind him. "I, Abraham Ashwood, Gamma of Shadowveil, strip Summer Ashwood of pack membership. She is no longer ours."

I looked up at him through the rain. Waited for him to take it back. To defend me. To ask what actually happened.

He turned and walked away.

The pack house doors opened behind him. Alexis stepped out wearing Luna whites—pristine, prepared, a dress that had clearly been waiting in her closet for exactly this moment. My sister. My baby sister who used to braid my hair and steal my clothes and tell me she loved me.

She didn't look down. She walked past me like I was already gone, heading toward the ceremony hall where my mate was waiting for someone to replace me.

I pulled myself upright. My hands were shaking so hard I could barely grip the mating pendant around my neck—the silver one Liam gave me the night we first scented each other, the one I'd worn every day since. I tore it off and dropped it into the mud.

I walked back into the pack house one last time. The Luna quarters were still warm. My clothes were still hanging in the closet. The bed was still made with the sheets we'd picked out together.

I gathered what was actually mine—a bag, some cash, the few things that predated Liam—and set fire to everything else.

The curtains caught first. Then the bed. I stood in the doorway and watched the flames climb the walls, consuming every dress he'd chosen, every gift he'd given, every object that represented a life I'd built on a foundation that turned out to be quicksand.

I didn't stay to watch it burn.

I crossed Shadowveil's territorial border on foot, walking into the winter dark with nothing but the clothes on my back and the absence where my wolf should have been. No pack. No bond. No family. No name that meant anything anymore.

But I was the only one leaving with no obligations left to honor.

Which meant I was the only one who was free.
