My Alpha Rejected My Scent, So Why Does His Enemy Lose Control Around Me Chapter 1

The dress was silver, the color of moonlight on water, and it had been made for the woman who would become Luna of Ridgeback Pack.

That was supposed to be me.

I stood at the center of the Moon Hall beneath the open skylight, the full moon pouring down over my bare shoulders. Three hundred wolves filled the benches around the circle. Elders in the front row. Warriors along the walls. Pups perched on their parents' knees, craning to see.

Every one of them was waiting for Alpha Adrian to claim me.

He walked toward me in a black suit, broad-shouldered and steady, the way he'd walked toward me a thousand times over the past three years. The courtship chain at my throat felt warm. He'd fastened it there himself on my nineteenth birthday, under a pine tree behind the training grounds, his hands shaking a little.

"Ready?" he murmured when he reached me.

"I've been ready for three years," I said.

He smiled. It was small, and it didn't quite reach his eyes.

The ritual was simple. The Alpha confirms his chosen mate's scent before the pack, then marks her, and the bond is sealed under the moon. The elders call it the oldest promise our kind can make.

Adrian leaned in. His breath touched the side of my neck, right above the pulse.

And then he stopped.

He didn't pull back. He just stayed there, frozen, close enough that I could feel him inhale once, then again, slower. Searching.

The hall went quiet in a way I felt in my teeth.

I knew. Before he said a word, I knew exactly what he wasn't finding.

For six months, my wolf had been drifting further away from me. She used to pace under my skin before every Full Moon, restless and loud. Now she barely stirred. My scent had faded with her, thinning out like perfume left too long on a dresser. I'd seen the healer twice. She couldn't explain it.

Adrian had noticed. Of course he had. He'd stopped burying his face in my hair. He'd started standing a half-step farther away during pack runs.

But every time I asked, he said, "It doesn't matter, Lena."

He straightened up. His jaw was tight.

"Adrian," I said quietly. "Not here."

"It has to be here." He didn't lower his voice. He turned to face the benches instead, and I understood with a cold, sinking clarity that he'd already decided before he ever walked into this hall. "The pack deserves honesty."

A murmur rippled through the crowd.

"A Luna isn't decoration," Adrian said. "On Full Moons, when the younger wolves lose control, she's the one who steadies them. At gatherings, her presence keeps the peace when tempers run hot. Her wolf has to be strong enough that others feel it and settle."

He looked at me then. Not cruelly. That almost made it worse.

"Lena's wolf has gone quiet. Her scent is too weak to hold this pack. I won't pretend otherwise just because it's painful."

Someone in the third row gasped. An elder muttered something sharp under her breath.

My face burned. I kept my hands still at my sides.

"You told me it didn't matter," I said.

"I hoped it wouldn't." He exhaled. "It does."

"So you waited until I was standing in this dress, in front of everyone, to tell me the truth."

"I waited because I thought your wolf would come back."

"And when she didn't, you figured the Moon Ceremony was a good time to bring it up?"

His eyes flashed. "I'm trying to do what's right for Ridgeback."

"You're trying to do what's easy for you."

The words landed. I saw it in the way his shoulders went rigid. But he didn't take them back, and neither did I.

Then the air shifted.

I smelled her before I saw her. Heat and iron and pine resin, a scent so thick it pressed against the back of my throat. Wolves along the walls lifted their heads instinctively, the way they did for Adrian.

Sienna Kade, Adrian's lead warrior, stepped out from the line of guards. She was tall and lean, dark hair braided tight against her skull, still wearing her training leathers instead of formal clothes. Her bloodline traced back to two generations of Alphas. Everyone in Ridgeback knew it. Everyone could feel it.

She didn't say a word. She just walked across the circle and stopped at Adrian's shoulder, close enough that their arms nearly touched.

Nobody told her to. She didn't need to be told.

The way she stood there, it looked like she'd always belonged in that spot.

"Tonight's bond ceremony is canceled," Adrian announced.

He didn't say her name. He didn't have to. Three hundred wolves were looking at Sienna and breathing in her scent and drawing their own conclusions.

I stood exactly where I'd been placed, on the silver marker in the floor where the Alpha's mate is meant to receive his mark. Moonlight still pooled around my feet. It felt ridiculous now, like a spotlight on an empty stage.

My mother was somewhere in the crowd. I didn't look for her. If I saw her face, I'd lose whatever was holding me upright.

Sienna glanced at me. There was no gloating in it. Just a flat, measuring look, like she was checking how much fight I had left.

I didn't give her anything.

I reached up and found the clasp of the courtship chain at the back of my neck. My fingers were steadier than I expected. The tiny silver links slid free, still warm from my skin.

Three years. He'd given it to me under a pine tree and told me I was the only future he could picture.

I stepped forward, took Adrian's hand, and turned it palm up.

He let me. I don't think he understood what I was doing until the chain pooled in the center of his palm.

His fingers closed around it too late to stop it.

"Lena." His voice dropped, rough and low, meant only for me. "Don't make this final."

I looked up at him. At the man I'd built my whole life around. At Sienna standing at his side like she'd been carved there.

"Didn't you just do that?" I asked.

He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.

I turned away.

The aisle between the benches felt a mile long. Whispers followed me down it, rising and falling like wind through dry grass. Someone said my name with pity. Someone else laughed, quickly hushed. I kept my chin up and my pace even, and I didn't let the silver hem of that stupid, beautiful dress trip me even once.

My wolf didn't make a sound. Not a whimper. Not a growl.

Maybe Adrian was right. Maybe there was nothing left in me to find.

The heavy oak doors stood open to the night. Cold air rushed in, sharp with frost and woodsmoke, and I walked straight into it.

A man was standing just outside the threshold.

He wasn't Ridgeback. I knew every face in this pack, and his wasn't one of them. He was tall, dressed in a dark coat, with a stillness to him that made the guards beside the doors keep a careful distance. Visiting delegation, maybe. I'd heard the elders mention that Blackmoor was sending its Alpha to witness the ceremony as a gesture of goodwill between territories.

Alpha Kael of Blackmoor.

Great. An audience from out of town, too.

I didn't slow down. I passed him close enough that my sleeve nearly brushed his arm, close enough to catch the faint scent of cedar and cold rain on him, and kept walking toward the dark tree line.

Behind me, his footsteps stopped.

I shouldn't have looked back. I did anyway.

He'd turned completely around. The light from the Moon Hall spilled across half his face, and he was staring at me with his head tilted slightly, nostrils flared, his whole body gone still in the way a wolf goes still when it catches something on the wind.

Not pity. Not curiosity.

Recognition.

Like he'd just breathed in something that an entire hall full of wolves, and the Alpha who'd held me for three years, had somehow missed.
