Rebirth of Love: Protect My Children Chapter 1

The sterile lights of the operating room were harsh against my stinging eyelids. A wave of nausea crashed over me, followed by a searing pain that ripped through my lower body. My memory flooded back in a torrent – the agony of childbirth, the pleas for a C-section ignored, the chilling silence as the monitor flatlined. I was dead.

But here I was again, back on the cold metal table, the metallic tang of disinfectant filling my nostrils. Panic clawed at my throat. This wasn't a dream. I was alive. But the reprieve was short-lived. Contractions, powerful and relentless, wracked my weakened body. Tears welled up in my eyes, hot against the clammy fear that slicked my skin.

Across the room, a group of figures hovered – doctors in their crisp blue scrubs, my husband, Michael and a woman with a pinched face and a tight bun. My mother-in-law, Eleanor. Her disapproval hung in the air as thick as the antiseptic.

"The mother's vitals are dropping," a doctor's voice announced, a hint of urgency creeping into his typically steady tone. "We strongly recommend a C-section."

Eleanor scoffed. "A C-section? In my day, women gave birth naturally. It builds character." Despite being a mother herself, her voice carried the icy certainty of someone who had never experienced the sheer agony of childbirth firsthand.

My vision blurred as another contraction hit. I wanted to scream, to beg, but my throat was raw and my voice wouldn't come. Michael, bless his useless heart, stood there mute, his face ashen, his gaze flickering between me and his mother. He dared not oppose her.

"Just breathe through it, dear," Eleanor chirped, her voice dripping with false sympathy. "It's expensive, you know. All that cutting and stitching. And the epidural! Don't even get me started on those fancy drugs."

Expensive? My life was draining away with every excruciating contraction and all she cared about was money? A surge of fury ignited within me, pushing back the tide of pain.

"Sign the papers!" I rasped, my voice hoarse. "I want the C-section! Now!"

One of the doctors, a young woman with kind eyes, looked down at me with a flicker of understanding. I used the last vestiges of my strength to prop myself up on my elbows.

"Don't listen to her!" I gasped, my voice cracking. "This is my body! My baby!"

Eleanor, however, wasn't finished. "What a waste! Wasting Michael's hard-earned money on such frivolous things!" she shrieked, stomping her feet. Her face, usually painted with a mask of propriety, contorted into a caricature of outrage.

Ignoring her, I reached for the clipboard the doctor held out, my hand shaking with exertion. With a ragged breath, I scrawled my signature across the form, the pen leaving a thin trail of sweat on the paper.

"Epidural too, please," I pleaded, my voice barely a whisper.

Eleanor let out a final, scathing remark before storming out of the room, leaving a trail of disapproval in her wake. The slam of the door was a welcome sound, a barrier between me and her suffocating judgment.

Finally, blessed relief began to seep into my body as the anesthesiologist did his work. The pain dulled, a distant echo of the storm that had raged within me. As the doctors prepped me for surgery, a single tear rolled down my cheek. This second chance, I wouldn't waste it.

The sterile air of the recovery room felt cool against my skin. The epidural had worked its magic, banishing the monstrous pain that would've haunted me as it did in my previous life. The whirring of machinery was a soothing lullaby compared to the screams trapped within my throat back then.

A wave of relief washed over me, mingled with a bone-deep exhaustion. And then, a tiny bundle swaddled in blue was placed in my arms. A wave of fierce love surged through me, pushing back the fatigue.

My eyes met my baby's – wide, inquisitive orbs the color of the summer sky. She didn't cry, just held me with an unwavering gaze. My heart ached with the overwhelming tenderness of a mother's love.

A harsh voice shattered the peaceful moment. "A girl? What a disappointment," Eleanor's voice dripped with disdain, echoing through the sterile room. It was like a bucket of ice water dumped over my newfound joy.

"Just look at all this wasted money," she continued, gesturing dismissively at the medical equipment surrounding us. "Your unproductive womb cost a fortune!"

Tears welled up in my eyes, blurring my vision. My joy curdled into a bitter cocktail of anger and resentment. How could she be so callous, so devoid of empathy?

My gaze darted towards Michael, hoping for some glimmer of support, some sign that he, at least, shared my elation. But he was oblivious, his thumbs flying across the screen of his phone, a vacant expression plastered on his face.

It hit me then, a realization as sharp as a slap. I had been living a lie, trapped in a loveless marriage with a spineless mama's boy. I had sacrificed my own well-being, even my life, for this family – a family that didn't seem to value me at all.

My fingers, trembling slightly, brushed against my daughter's cheek. She was so small, so perfect. A fierce protectiveness flared within me. This tiny human deserved a better life, a life filled with love and security.

"We're not poor," I finally forced the words out, my voice raspy with exhaustion. "Both Michael and I have good jobs. We make a decent living."

Eleanor scoffed. "Decent living in your fancy world maybe! But money doesn't grow on trees, you know. Every penny counts!" Her eyes narrowed, her disapproval a tangible presence in the room.

"We have a washing machine, but you insist on handwashing everything," I continued, my voice gaining strength with every word. "We have air conditioning, but you make us sweat in this heat to save a few bucks on electricity."

Memories flooded back – the cluttered apartment, overflowing with cardboard boxes, a constant reminder of her frugality. The countless arguments where my attempts at creating a comfortable home were dismissed as frivolous spending.

"You always guilt us about saving, claiming we don't appreciate hardship," I pressed on, my voice trembling with barely contained anger. "But that's your past, not ours. We have the means to live comfortably and this isn't some extravagant life you imagine."

Michael finally looked up from his phone, his expression a mask of confusion. "But Mom's right," he mumbled, his voice barely a whisper. "Saving is a good habit, isn't it?"

"Always 'Mom this, Mom that,'" I snapped. "Does your mother control your every thought? Would you jump off a bridge if she told you to?"

There was a tense silence in the room. My words hung heavy in the air. I had finally found my voice and I wouldn't be silenced. This was a new beginning, not just for me, but for my daughter as well. We deserved better and I wouldn't settle for anything less.

Barely a day had passed since the operation when Eleanor suddenly exclaimed, "We can't afford to stay here another night! The hospital bills are outrageous!" Her words displayed a complete lack of concern for me, the one who had just brought her own granddaughter into the world.

My body still throbbed with the aftereffects of childbirth. The anesthesia had worn off hours ago, leaving me weak and trembling. Yet, there sat Eleanor, perched on the edge of the visitor's chair, munching on a pack of chips, utterly oblivious to my pain.

"Where's Michael?" I croaked, my voice hoarse. A wave of nausea washed over me and I squeezed my eyes shut, willing it to pass.

"Work, of course," Eleanor replied dismissively. "He can't just take time off like you." Her words stung, a bitter confirmation of the reality I desperately clung to – a reality where my husband, Michael, cared more about his mother's worries than his own family's wellbeing.

I attempted to sit up, a simple task made monumental by the exhaustion that weighed me down. A whimper escaped my lips as the pain lanced through my lower body. Eleanor didn't even flinch.

Just then, a young nurse with gentle eyes entered the ward. Her gaze took in my struggle and with a kind smile, she hurried over to assist me.

"The doctor advised that you should remain in bed for at least a few more days," the nurse explained patiently. "It's important for you to recover properly."

Eleanor scoffed. "Back in my day, I was back in the fields working the day after giving birth! This generation is so soft."

The nurse's smile faltered slightly, but she maintained her professionalism. "Every woman is different, Mrs. Hart," she addressed Eleanor with forced respect. "It's important to listen to your body."

I offered the nurse a weak smile of gratitude, silently thanking her for her empathy, a balm on the raw wounds left by Eleanor's callous behavior.

The days that followed were a blur of pain and exhaustion. My parents, long gone, couldn't be here for me. Michael, my supposed partner in this journey, was a ghost, his presence as fleeting as a passing breeze. It was a cruel irony – the one person who should have been by my side was the one who seemed the most distant.

With a heavy heart, I knew I had to take matters into my own hands. Using the money I had saved, I hired a caregiver, a kind woman named Sophie. Sophie was a godsend. She not only took care of me but also prepared nutritious meals that helped me regain my strength.

One afternoon, while Sophie was preparing a steaming bowl of nourishing chicken soup, Eleanor stormed into the ward, her face a mask of fury.

"How much is this woman charging?" she demanded, her voice laced with accusation. "You're spending money like there's no tomorrow! Michael works so hard and you just waste it all!"

I winced at the sharp pain in my side but met her gaze head-on. "This is my money, Eleanor," I said, my voice surprisingly strong. "Not a single penny of it came from Michael's pocket. And if you're not willing to help, then fine. But without Sophie, I wouldn't have been able to get out of bed, let alone take care of my daughter."

Eleanor bristled. "Didn't I bring you food?" she retorted, her chest puffing out with indignation.

I looked down at the greasy soup she held, a mocking substitute for the meal I craved. "Keep it," I said with a disdainful glance.

"You're so ungrateful!" she sputtered. "We didn't have such luxuries back in the day. Just having soup was a blessing!"

"If you want it, you can have it," I repeated, my voice firm. "Why do you always bring up the past?" I countered, my voice gaining strength with every word. "You didn't have money back then, but I have money now. What's wrong with spending my own money on a caregiver? It's not like I'm asking for a handout from you or Michael."

Eleanor and her wimp of a son had pushed me to the absolute limit. Naively, I used to think all mothers-in-law were like this – overbearing and judgmental. But dealing with the constant nagging was one thing; the callous behavior during the most vulnerable moment of my life, childbirth, was unforgivable.

Every dismissive word, every unhelpful glance, chipped away at the last vestiges of my tolerance. Resentment festered within me, a poisonous bloom finally reaching its peak. This marriage, built on a foundation of sand, was crumbling around me. It was a disaster, a sham and I refused to be a part of it any longer.
