Chapter 3

Izzy arrived early the next morning.

Thirty minutes early, to be exact.

After yesterday's shock, she wasn't taking any chances. Her hair was tied neatly, her blouse crisp, her nerves on edge.

The office was quiet at that hour, sunlight streaming through the tall windows. She sat at her new desk just outside Dominic's glass office, trying to look busy as she arranged files and opened her laptop.

Still, her mind wouldn't stop replaying the night at the club... the heat, his hands, the rush she'd never felt before. Now that the stranger was her boss.

"Focus, Izzy," she whispered to herself. "Work. Just work."

The elevator chimed. Her heart skipped.

Dominic stepped out, tall and calm as ever-in a dark suit. No tie. Sleeves rolled slightly at the wrists. Controlled, composed, confident. The air seemed to shift the moment he walked in.

"Good morning, Miss Hart," he said, his tone smooth.

"Good morning, Mr. Steele."

He stopped by her desk, glanced over her setup. "Early."

"I wanted to make a good impression."

"You already have." His voice was steady, but his eyes held something deeper... something that made her pulse jump.

Dominic turned toward his office, then paused. "Bring the Grant proposal when you're ready. And coffee."

"Yes, sir."

When he closed the glass door behind him, Izzy took a slow breath. You can handle this, she told herself. Just stay professional.

Half an hour later, she brought the files in, careful not to make eye contact. Dominic was on a call, voice low but firm. His desk was spotless, every line in the room sharp and modern.

He ended the call and looked up. "Set it there."

She did, placing the folder on his desk. He gestured for her to sit.

"Tell me," he said, leaning back. "What would you do differently with this campaign?"

She blinked. "Me?"

"Yes, you."

Izzy glanced down at the papers. "Um... I think it's strong, but the tone feels too formal. Maybe we could make it more relatable, more emotional. The product's about connection, not just image."

Dominic studied her quietly. "You've read it once, and you already see that?"

"I... I think so, yes."

He nodded slowly. "Interesting."

For a long moment, neither spoke. The silence was charged. She could feel the weight of his gaze. Not inappropriate,... but curious.

Measured.

"You surprise me, Miss Hart," he said finally.

She tried to smile. "I hope that's a good thing."

"It could be," he replied, almost under his breath.

When she stood to leave, he said, "You learn fast. Keep doing that."

"Yes, Mr. Steele."

Her voice came out softer than she meant it to. He noticed. His eyes flicked toward her mouth before he looked away.

She left the office, heart racing.

Back at her desk, Maya's name popped up on her phone screen.

Maya: Sooo... how's the new boss? 👀

Izzy: Complicated.

Maya: That bad?

Izzy: No. That's dangerous.

Maya sent a row of laughing emojis, but Izzy didn't smile.

She could feel it... the tension under every polite word, every stolen glance.

And she hated that a small part of her... liked it.

When Dominic walked out later to check on a meeting, their eyes met for the briefest second. He gave nothing away, his face unreadable, but she could tell.

He remembered. Just like she did.

And in that moment, Izzy realized something dangerous: she was no longer sure if she wanted to forget that night... or relive it.

The office had gone quiet hours ago.

Desks were empty, lights dimmed, and the only sound was the soft hum of computers.

Izzy was still at her desk, typing out a report. Her first day had been long, but she wasn't ready to go home yet. Maybe it was the nerves, maybe the desire to prove herself... or maybe she just didn't want to think too much about Dominic Steele and everything that had happened before this job began.

Maybe she wanted to stay back.

Maybe. Maybe.

A lot of maybe.

She rubbed her eyes, took a deep breath, and stretched.

"Still here?"

The voice startled her. She turned and found Dominic standing by the glass wall, his jacket gone, his shirt sleeves rolled up. The sight made her heart do something it shouldn't.

"Yes," she said quickly, standing up. "Just finishing up the report you asked for."

He stepped closer, scanning the files on her desk. "On your first day?"

"I wanted to show you I can handle the workload."

Dominic's lips curved slightly, the smallest of smiles. "Impressive. Most people can't even find the coffee machine on their first day."

"I found that too," she said, trying to sound funny.

He chuckled softly. "Impressive."

The silence stretched. The kind that wasn't uncomfortable... just heavy. Electric.

Then, after a pause, he said, "Would you like a drink?"

Izzy blinked. "Now?"

"Now," he said simply. "Just one. In my office."

Every voice in her head screamed no. But her heart whispered yes.

She nodded. "All right."

He held the door open for her as she followed him inside. The office lights were dim, and city lights spilling in through the tall glass windows. On the low shelf near his desk sat a crystal decanter and two glasses.

Dominic poured amber liquid into both and handed her one.

"To your first day," he said.

"To survive it," she replied with a small laugh. Their fingers brushed as she took the glass.

He didn't move away immediately. The air seemed to shift... closer, warmer.

Then, in a low voice, he said, "I never expected to see the girl whose pussy begged me to be fucked."

Her breath caught. She set the glass down slowly, heartbeat pounding. "So you do remember."

His gaze didn't waver. "I remember everything."

For a moment, neither of them spoke. The city glowed behind them, a blur of lights and motion, but in that quiet office, time seemed to still.

"I didn't plan for this," she said softly.

"Neither did I."

Dominic took a step closer. "But it happened. And now..." His voice trailed off.

Izzy felt her pulse rise, her skin tingling from the nearness of him. She should have walked out. She knew that. But she didn't.

Instead, she looked up at him. "You're my boss now."

"I'm aware," he said, voice low. "And I don't mix business with pleasure."

"Then what are we doing?"

Dominic studied her face for a long moment, his expression unreadable. "Testing control," he said finally.

The words lingered in the air...heavy, suggestive, and dangerous.

He reached out, brushed a stray strand of hair from her face, and stepped back. The movement broke the moment, but not the tension.

"Go home, Izzy," he said quietly. "Before I forget where we are."

She swallowed hard, nodded, and turned to leave. But as she reached the door, she heard him say...

"You did a good job today."

Izzy didn't look back. She just whispered, "Thank you," and walked out, her heart racing for reasons that had nothing to do with work.

When the elevator doors closed, she exhaled shakily, leaning against the wall. The city lights below blurred as she whispered to herself.

"This is going to be a problem."

Chapter 4

The next morning, Izzy walked into the office feeling as if she hadn't slept at all.

She had replayed last night's scene over and over... the way Dominic looked at her, the weight in his voice when he said I remember everything.

It had been the kind of moment that lived somewhere between danger and desire.

Now, she had to pretend it never happened.

Her steps echoed in the hallway as she reached her desk. The first thing she noticed was that Dominic's door was already open. He was inside, phone to his ear, voice low and even.

When he saw her through the glass, he gave a small nod... nothing more. No hint of what had happened the night before.

Professional. Controlled. Cold.

Izzy straightened her back and focused on her computer.

The morning passed slowly. Dominic barely spoke to her, giving short instructions and brisk responses.

Once, when she brought in a report, their fingers almost touched.... almost.... but he pulled his hand back before they did.

The message was clear.

Boundaries.

At lunch, Maya called.

Maya: You sound stressed. Don't tell me your boss is a nightmare already.

Izzy: He's not a nightmare. Just... complicated.

Maya: Complicated as in you like him?

Izzy: Maya...

Maya: Oh my God, you do.

Izzy sighed, lowering her voice. "It's not like that. He's my boss. And..." she hesitated, glancing at Dominic's office, "we might've met before."

Maya: Met? Or met-met?

Izzy: The second one.

Maya: Oh, Izzy. That's not complicated. That's a movie waiting to happen.

Izzy groaned. "It's a disaster waiting to happen."

She ended the call with a weak laugh, but her chest felt heavy.

When she returned to her desk, Dominic called her name.

"Miss Hart, can you step into my office?"

She froze for half a second, then walked in, keeping her expression calm.

"I've reviewed your proposal revisions," he said. "You've got a good instinct for tone. I've moved you onto the Harper account. It's a senior-level project, so consider this a test."

Her eyes widened. "Already?"

He leaned back in his chair. "You earned it. Unless you think you're not ready."

"No," she said quickly. "I'm ready."

"Good."

Their eyes met. Neither spoke for several seconds.

Something in his gaze shifted...softer for just a heartbeat before it hardened again.

"About last night," he said.

Izzy's breath caught.

"You were right," he continued, tone steady. "You're my employee now. And for that we need boundaries. I'll keep that in mind."

"I understand," she said quietly.

He nodded once. "Good. Close the door on your way out."

She turned, hand trembling slightly on the handle. His voice was even, but she could feel the tension he was fighting just as much as she was.

The rest of the day dragged. Dominic kept his distance, and Izzy buried herself in work. Still, whenever she looked up, she caught him watching her... quick, unreadable glances that made her pulse jump every time.

By evening, most of the staff had left again. Izzy stayed, lost in her laptop screen. She didn't notice Dominic approach until he spoke.

"You're doing it again," he said quietly.

She looked up. "Doing what?"

"Working late on your second day."

She smiled faintly. "Habit, I guess."

His eyes softened slightly. "You don't have to prove yourself every night, Izzy."

She blinked at the sound of her name. He almost never used it.

"I'm just trying to keep up," she said.

Dominic nodded. "Good. But remember... trying to prove yourself doesn't mean pushing yourself to the edge. It means knowing when to stop."

The words hung between them, layered with meaning.

Izzy swallowed hard. "Good advice."

He gave a faint smile. "I rarely give it."

Then, just as he was about to leave, he paused and looked back at her.

"Go home, Miss Hart," he said, voice lower now. "Before you give me another reason to forget the rules."

Her heart skipped. He left before she could reply.

Izzy sat there, staring at the glass door long after he was gone, her thoughts a storm she couldn't name.

Whatever this was between them... it wasn't going away.

And part of her wasn't sure she wanted it to.

The evening air felt cool against Izzy's skin as she stepped out of the office.

Her head was full... full of work, of tension, of Dominic's voice echoing in her mind.

She texted Maya on impulse.

Izzy: Still up for that drink?

Maya: Always. Tell me where.

Twenty minutes later, they met at a cozy rooftop bar not far from the office. Strings of lights glowed above them, and music hummed softly in the background.

Maya waved her over with a grin. "There's my hardworking girl!"

Izzy smiled weakly as she sank into the chair. "More like my overly complicated one."

"Uh-oh." Maya handed her a glass. "You sound like someone who's about to confess something juicy."

Izzy groaned, taking a sip. "I don't even know where to start."

"Start with your boss," Maya said immediately. "You said he's complicated. Spill."

Izzy hesitated. "You remember that night at the club? When you ditched me to have a threesome.. I met him there."

. "FYI I did not ditch you honey... mama needed to be fed.. Maya said "Dont tell me the guy from the blurry picture? "Maya gasped, eyes wide

Izzy nodded slowly. "It's him. Dominic Steele. My new boss."

Maya nearly choked on her drink. "You've fucked your boss before your first day? Izzy!"

"It wasn't like that," Izzy protested. "I didn't know! I didn't even know his name. It just... happened."

Maya leaned in, voice lowering. "How was it... was it good.. Was it wild?"

Izzy let out a breath her face flushed. "It was... crazy.. But he pretended.. Or rather we both pretended not to know each other at first. Now we just brush it off."

Her best friend studied her carefully. "Are you okay with that?"

Izzy looked down at her glass, watching the ice melt. "I don't know. He's different. He's intense, controlled, smart. When he talks, it's like he's always testing me. And sometimes, it feels like..."

"Like what?"

"Like he's daring me to lose myself," Izzy said softly.

Maya's lips curled into a slow smile. "Sounds like someone's caught feelings."

Izzy rolled her eyes. "Don't. It's not like that."

"Oh, please." Maya leaned back. "You're glowing and miserable at the same time. Classic sign of attraction."

Izzy laughed despite herself. "He's my boss, Maya. It's impossible."

"Impossible doesn't mean it won't happen."

Izzy shook her head. "You're no help."

Maya raised her glass. "I'm your best friend. I'm supposed to encourage bad decisions."

They both laughed, the sound easing some of the heaviness Izzy had carried all day. For the first time in hours, she felt lighter.

Still, when she got home later that night and lay in bed, the laughter faded into quiet thoughts.

She could still hear Dominic's voice.

Before you give me another reason to forget the rules.

Izzy stared at the ceiling.

She wasn't sure which scared her more... the thought of breaking those rules... or how much she wanted to.

Chapter 5

It had been a month since Izzy started working at Steele Industries.

A whole month of early mornings, long meetings, and trying to act like her boss didn't make her pulse skip every time he walked by.

Dominic Steele had been the perfect picture of professionalism. Cold. Polite. Distant.

He spoke to her only when necessary.... short, clipped sentences, all business, no warmth. It was as if that night between them never happened.

And Izzy had almost convinced herself she was fine with it.

Almost.

Until the rumors started.

It began on a quiet Tuesday morning. She was by the coffee machine when two coworkers whispered nearby, thinking she couldn't hear.

"Did you hear? Mr. Steele's been seeing someone."

"Really? Who?"

"No one knows. Some woman who's been visiting his office. Red lipstick, heels, the works."

Izzy froze mid-pour.

Her chest tightened in a way she didn't like.

She didn't want to care. She really didn't. But the thought of Dominic with someone else smiling at them, touching them... twisted something inside her.

She set her cup down and forced a calm expression. "Morning," she said quickly, and the two women jumped, mumbling greetings before hurrying off.

Back at her desk, she tried to focus on the Harper project, but the words blurred. Every time Dominic's door opened, her eyes flicked up.

And when he came out to speak to another manager, she swore she caught a faint trace of perfume... not hers.

Get a grip, Izzy, she told herself. You have no claim on him.

Still, when Maya texted later that afternoon

Maya: Surviving work?

Izzy: Trying to.

Maya: Still avoiding the boss you slept with?

Izzy: He's avoiding me.

Maya: Maybe he's distracted. Maybe by someone else. 👀

Izzy didn't reply. She just turned her phone face down and exhaled sharply.

That's when Dominic's voice came from behind her. "Miss Hart."

Her heart jumped. She turned, forcing a neutral tone. "Yes, Mr. Steele?"

He held out a file. "I need you to make a reservation at Lume, eight o'clock. Two seats. Private table."

Her chest tightened. "Of course," she said.

"Confirm it under my name," he added before walking back into his office.

She sat frozen for a few seconds, staring at the file in her hands.

So it's true, she thought. He's taking someone out.

She shouldn't care. She really shouldn't. But she did.

Later that evening, as she finished updating some documents, she saw the elevator open. A woman stepped out... tall, elegant, with glossy hair and bold red lips. She walked straight into Dominic's office without knocking.

Izzy tried to focus on her screen, but her stomach twisted. She heard faint laughter from inside the glass room, followed by silence.

A few minutes later, she stood to leave... and that's when it happened.

The woman stepped closer to Dominic, smiling, her hand on his chest. Dominic didn't move back fast enough.

Izzy froze, eyes wide, just as the woman leaned in and kissed him.

The world seemed to blur for a second.

Dominic didn't kiss her back... not fully... but he didn't push her away immediately either. And that was enough.

Izzy's chest ached in a way she didn't understand. She turned quickly, grabbed her bag, and walked out before they could see her expression.

Outside, the cool night air hit her face. She kept walking, head down, trying not to think. But the image replayed over and over... his lips, that woman's red lipstick, the quiet between them.

By the time she got home, she was angry.

Angry at herself for caring. Angry at him for pretending not to.

She threw her bag on the couch and sank into the cushions, her phone buzzing.

Maya: You okay?

Izzy: Not really.

Maya: What happened?

Izzy: He was with someone. At work.

Maya: Your boss? The guy from the club?

Izzy: Yes.

Maya: Want me to say something comforting or something honest?

Izzy: Both.

Maya: Comforting: He's an idiot. Honest: You care about him more than you want to admit.

Izzy sighed, typing slowly.

Izzy: Maybe I do. But he doesn't feel the same.

Still, she couldn't forget the look in his eyes when he'd said before you give me another reason to forget the rules.

That hadn't been cold. That had been something else.

And deep down, she knew Dominic Steele wasn't a man who let people close easily. Which meant whoever that woman was... and whatever that kiss meant... there was more to it.

Izzy didn't know whether to hope... or to stop herself before it was too late.

Izzy couldn't remember much of the walk home.

The city lights blurred past her, voices fading into background noise.

All she could see in her mind was that moment the woman's red lips pressed against Dominic's, his stillness, the silence after.

She unlocked her apartment door and dropped her bag by the couch. The quiet hit her harder than she expected.

Her chest felt heavy.

She told herself it didn't matter.... he could see whoever he wanted. He was her boss, nothing more.

But that small voice in her heart wouldn't listen.

She sat on the couch, head in her hands. Why do I care so much?

She remembered the first time she'd met him... how he'd looked at her like she was the only person in the room. The way his voice had dropped when he said I remember everything.

And now, that same man had stood still while another woman kissed him.

Her phone buzzed again, another message from Maya.

Maya: Still up?

Izzy: Yeah.

Maya: Want me to come over?

Izzy: No, I'll be fine. Just tired.

She set the phone down and leaned back.

The truth was, she wasn't fine.

She felt foolish... jealous of someone that wasn't hers, hurt by a man who owed her nothing.

But underneath the jealousy was something else. Confusion.

Because even now, she couldn't shake the feeling that Dominic wasn't as untouched by her as he seemed.

She'd seen the way his jaw tightened when he looked at her too long. The small pauses before he spoke her name. The flashes of warmth that slipped through his cold, professional front.

Maybe he was fighting it. Maybe they both were.

Izzy stood and walked to the window, staring out at the city. The streets below glowed with moving lights, but she barely saw them.
