Out Of The Ashes I Crushed His Empire Chapter 1

Exactly thirty days ago, my husband, Jackson Ridge, died in a horrific yacht explosion. The police told me the fire burned so hot and so fast that there was practically nothing left to bury.

Since that day, I was trapped inside the sprawling, suffocating Ridge family estate, living under the cold, disdainful roof of his twin brother, Daniel Ridge.

And to make the mockery of my life complete, my parents’ beloved adopted sister, Jessica, had just announced her engagement to Daniel.

My husband had been dead for barely a month, and my sister was already planning a wedding with his twin.

My parents, who had always favored Jessica’s bright smiles and sweet words over my quiet nature, were thrilled. They held her hands, tears in their eyes, calling it a "beautiful continuation of the family bond."

They didn't look at me when they said it. They never really looked at me. Jessica was the adopted child, yet growing up, she was the one who got the custom dresses, the praise, the unconditional love. I was just the biological shadow standing in the background.

I didn't cry when I heard the engagement news. I just felt tired.

So tired that I couldn't even find the energy to hate them.

I placed a trembling hand over my flat stomach.

The baby inside me was the only piece of Jackson I had left. The man who used to hold me close, kissing my forehead, promising we would grow old together. He had been my only light in a family that constantly pushed me aside.

I couldn't let my child grow up in this toxic house.

I couldn't let my baby be surrounded by Daniel’s cold, mocking glares and Jessica’s poorly hidden smirks.

I packed my things quietly. Just one suitcase. I didn't want any of the Ridge family's money, and I certainly didn't want their pity.

But basic manners dictated I at least say goodbye to the head of the house.

I walked down the long, dimly lit hallway toward Daniel’s study.

The thick, expensive carpets swallowed the sound of my footsteps. The house was dead quiet, save for the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the foyer.

I prepared my script in my head. I am leaving, Daniel. I wish you and Jessica the best.

Simple. Clean. I would walk out the front door and never look back.

When I reached the heavy oak doors of the study, I found one slightly ajar.

A sliver of warm yellow light spilled out onto the dark hallway floor.

I raised my hand to knock.

But my knuckles froze in mid-air.

From inside, the sound of heavy, messy gasps and soft moans drifted out.

I held my breath and looked through the crack.

"Daniel" was pinning Jessica against the edge of the heavy mahogany desk. His hands were tangled in her hair, his head dipped low, kissing her with a desperate, consuming hunger.

I stood there, my breathing stopping completely.

Jessica pulled back slightly. Her face was flushed, her lipstick smeared, and a sweet, giggling smile played on her lips.

She reached up and traced the line of his jaw with her manicured fingernail.

"Jackson," she whispered, her voice laced with honey. "When can we stop pretending?"

The name hit me like a physical blow.

My mind went entirely blank. A loud ringing filled my ears.

The man holding her didn't correct her. He didn't push her away and coldly state that he was Daniel.

Instead, he let out a low, familiar chuckle.

It was the exact same chuckle that used to rumble against my ear late at night. The exact same sound he made when he used to pull me into his arms.

"Soon, baby," he murmured, leaning in to kiss her neck. "Once the legalities of the explosion are fully settled, and Monica is finally out of the picture. Daniel's identity, his shares, his freedom—it's all ours now."

In that single second, the world as I knew it shattered into a million jagged pieces.

He wasn't Daniel.

Daniel was the one who died on that yacht.

The man standing in that room, holding my sister, was my husband.

Jackson Ridge.

My throat closed up. The air in the hallway suddenly vanished, leaving me suffocating.

I stepped back, my legs trembling so violently they could no longer hold my weight.

I collapsed against the cold wall, sliding down to the floor without making a single sound.

I didn't scream. I didn't burst into the room and cause a scene, demanding answers while sobbing uncontrollably.

I just sat there in the shadows, clutching my stomach, while the muffled sounds of their laughter and kisses echoed from the study.

My heart had been completely hollowed out, scraped clean until there was nothing left but a freezing, empty void.

I looked down at my stomach in the dark.

Jackson had killed his brother. He had killed our marriage. He had killed the woman I used to be.

But as I felt the faint, almost imagined warmth of the tiny life growing inside me, my tears instantly dried up.

Since Jackson Ridge was already dead to the world, I would make sure he stayed dead.
