Oops! CEO, Your Substitute Bride Is A Hidden Boss! Chapter 1

"You will marry the Carlisle heir instead of your sister, Alexandra. If you refuse, this goes straight into the fire."

The threat hung in the air, sharp and suffocating. Cynthia Hayes, Alexandra's stepmother, slammed a small velvet box onto the glass coffee table. The lid popped open, revealing a delicate diamond necklace nestled on white satin. The name Seraphina was elegantly etched into its silver clasp. It was the only thing Alexandra had left of her birth mother.

Alexandra's breath hitched. So this is their grand plan, she thought, a cold, venomous fury igniting in her chest. She had known her sudden recall from the countryside wasn't out of familial love, but she hadn't expected them to be this utterly despicable. To use a dead woman's memory as a bargaining chip.

Her fingers twitched with a violent urge to snatch the necklace back, to protect it. Not yet. Don't show them your hand, her instincts warned. She forced her hands to remain flat against her thighs, locking her expression into an unreadable mask.

Beside Cynthia sat Holly, Alexandra's stepsister. Holly inspected her perfectly manicured nails with a bored, haughty expression before letting out a cruel little laugh. "Honestly, it's a perfect match," Holly sneered. "A wild girl dragged back from the countryside paired with a living dead man. You should be thanking me, sister. If I weren't so opposed to becoming a premature widow, you'd never get a golden opportunity like this."

Alexandra's gaze shifted to Holly. The raw, terrifying coldness in her blue eyes made Holly's smirk falter. She snapped her mouth shut, shrinking back slightly into the plush sofa.

"I won't do it," Alexandra said, her voice flat and devoid of the panic they were so desperate to see.

Cynthia's fake, maternal smile vanished, replaced by the ruthless greed that defined her. She picked up the necklace, letting the fragile chain dangle precariously from her blood-red fingernails. "You think you have a choice?" Cynthia hissed. "The Carlisle family is paying a fortune for this union—a sum that will save your father's failing company. And since Martin is too much of a coward to face you himself, I am making the decision."

The mention of her father, Martin Hayes, and his complicit silence extinguished the very last flicker of hope Alexandra held for this family.

To prove she wasn't bluffing, Cynthia stood up and walked over to the grand stone fireplace dominating the living room. A roaring fire crackled within. She held the delicate necklace out, dangling it just inches above the dancing, orange flames.

"I'll count to three," Cynthia said, her tone deadpan, the firelight casting sinister shadows across her face. "One."

Alexandra's heart hammered against her ribs. The blistering heat of the hearth seemed to sear her own skin as she imagined her mother's legacy dropping into the embers, melting into a worthless, blackened lump. It was a despicable trap, designed to exploit her only vulnerability.

"Two," Cynthia barked, impatience lacing her voice as she lowered her hand a fraction of an inch.

Every primal instinct in Alexandra's body screamed at her to lunge. Her muscles coiled tight, a violent urge surging through her veins to tackle Cynthia to the stone hearth and pry her mother's legacy from those manicured claws. I could do it, she thought, her jaw clenching until it ached. I could fight them right now.

But the blinding rage was quickly pierced by a razor-sharp clarity. If I fight them over this, I win a necklace, but I stay trapped in this house. I remain their pawn, bleeding out slowly.

She stared at the orange flames reflecting in Cynthia's cruel eyes. They thought they were breaking her. They thought they were forcing her into a dead end. But as the heat washed over her face, Alexandra realized they weren't pushing her into a corner—they were handing her the keys to her own cage.

Alexandra closed her eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. The panic evaporated, leaving behind a chilling, calculating calm.

The Carlisle family. They were untouchable, possessing wealth and power the Hayes family could only dream of. If the rumors were true and the Carlisle heir was truly comatose—a "living dead man"—she wouldn't just be a prisoner in a new cage. She would be a wife with unlimited resources, untouchable status, and zero marital obligations. It was the ultimate stepping stone. She could use the Carlisle name to build her own empire, secure her absolute independence, and finally crush the people who had tormented her.

She opened her eyes. All trace of emotion was gone, replaced by a lethal clarity.

Just as Cynthia opened her mouth to say "three," Alexandra spoke. Her voice was clear and steady. "I'll marry him."

Triumphant, ugly smiles instantly bloomed on the faces of her stepmother and stepsister. Cynthia stepped back from the hearth, dropping the necklace back into the velvet box before tossing it across the coffee table like a piece of garbage. "Good girl. The Carlisles will send a car for you tomorrow morning."

Alexandra didn't scramble for the box. She moved with deliberate slowness, her gaze locked onto Cynthia with such an unnerving stillness that the older woman shifted uncomfortably. Alexandra reached out and picked up the velvet box, her thumb gently stroking the clasp.

Cynthia. Holly. Martin, she thought, a silent, bloody vow echoing in the chambers of her heart. Enjoy this victory. Because I will use the very monster you threw me to, and I will make you pay back a thousand times over.

Without another word, she stood up. Her back was ramrod straight, each step toward her bedroom a steady beat on the drum of her vengeance.

She shut her bedroom door, finally cutting off the muffled sounds of their celebratory chatter. Leaning against the heavy oak wood, she allowed her mask of icy composure to slip, just for a moment. She opened the box and clutched the cool metal of the necklace to her chest, the physical touch grounding her burning resolve.

"Mom," she whispered to the empty room, her eyes dry but blazing with a newly ignited fire. "Wait for me. I'm going to take back everything that belongs to us."
