My Son Called Me the Other Woman Chapter 1

For six years, I believed I was the luckiest woman in New York.

My husband, David Marlow, was the CEO of a public tech company. Handsome. Rich. The kind of man who held doors open and remembered anniversaries. Magazines called him "the perfect family man."

And I was the wife who had given up her career to stay home with him and our six-year-old son, Lumia.

I never regretted it. Not once.

Until that morning.

I was kneeling in the front hall, wrestling Lumia's arm into his blue winter coat. He kept wiggling, the way he always did.

"Hold still, baby. We're going to be late."

He stopped moving. He tipped his head back and studied my face with his father's gray eyes.

"Mommy, are you the other woman?"

My fingers froze on his zipper.

"What did you say?"

"Are you the other woman?" He said it slowly, like I was the one who didn't understand.

I laughed, a small, thin sound. "Lumia, where did you hear that?"

"Daddy said it."

The hall suddenly felt too narrow.

"Daddy said what, exactly?"

Lumia frowned, serious as a little judge. "He said people who really love each other should be together. And you took Daddy away. So you're a bad woman."

I stared at him. He stared back. No meanness in his face at all. Just certainty.

"Sweetheart, I think you're mixing something up. Maybe a story from school?"

"No." He shook his head hard. "Daddy said."

The school bus honked outside.

I zipped his coat the rest of the way. My hands were cold. I kissed his forehead anyway.

"Go on. Have a good day."

He ran out without looking back.

I told myself it was a cartoon. A kid at school. A sentence pulled out of some grown-up conversation and twisted.

I told myself that all day.

---

David came home a little after seven.

I heard his key in the lock and went to meet him the way I always did. Arms open. Smile ready.

"Hey, you."

"Hey, beautiful."

He pulled me in. I pressed my face against his chest.

And I smelled her.

Not a hint. Not a trace. A thick, sweet perfume, heavy with roses and something like vanilla. It clung to the collar of his white shirt.

I didn't wear perfume. I never had.

I pulled back. "You smell like a department store."

He didn't even blink. "Business dinner. One of the investors brought his wife. She hugged everybody at the table." He made a face. "I think I'm going to sneeze for a week."

"She must have really liked you."

"She really liked the wine." He grinned and bent to kiss my forehead, soft and warm. "Don't look at me like that, Giselle. You know you're the only woman I see."

I wanted to believe him so badly that I did.

"Lumia asked me something weird this morning," I said.

He was already loosening his tie. "Yeah?"

"He asked if I was the other woman."

David's hand stopped on the knot. Just for a second. Then it moved again.

"Kids say crazy things." He chuckled. "Last week he told me the moon was made of cheese because his teacher said so."

"He said you told him."

"Me?" David laughed louder this time. "Babe. Come on."

He walked past me toward the stairs. I stood in the hallway with that perfume still in my nose.

---

At eleven-forty, his phone rang.

I was half-asleep. I felt the bed shift as he sat up.

"Yeah. Now? Okay. I'll be there."

He was already pulling on his pants when I rolled over.

"What's going on?"

"Server crash. The whole board's freaking out." He leaned down and squeezed my shoulder. "Emergency meeting. Go back to sleep. I'll be home before you wake up."

"At midnight?"

"That's tech, honey."

The front door closed. His car started.

I lay there for maybe ten seconds.

Then I got up, pulled a coat over my pajamas, checked that the nanny cam was on in Lumia's room, and grabbed my keys.

I didn't think. My body just moved.

---

He didn't drive to his office.

He drove to the Halden Grand, a five-star hotel on Park Avenue, and handed his keys to the valet like he'd done it a hundred times.

I parked across the street. My hands were shaking so hard I nearly dropped my phone.

I walked into the lobby with my coat buttoned to my chin. No one stopped me. I watched the elevator numbers climb and stop on twenty-two.

I took the next one up.

The doors slid open, and I saw them.

David stood halfway down the hall, his back against the wall. A young woman in a tight red dress was pressed against him, her arms wrapped around his neck. He was kissing her like he was starving.

Like he had never kissed me.

"God, I missed you," she whispered.

"Not here," he said. But he didn't stop.

She laughed against his mouth. "Then hurry."

He fumbled a key card out of his pocket. They stumbled through a door, still tangled up in each other.

The door swung shut.

It didn't latch.

A strip of yellow light stayed open along the edge.

I walked toward it. I didn't feel my feet. I didn't feel anything.

Inside, a zipper. A thud. Her moan, high and breathless.

"Fuck, David. Right there."

"You have no idea how long I've wanted this."

The bed creaked. Again. Faster.

I put my hand over my mouth.

"Six years," he groaned. "Six fucking years."

"Then why did you marry her?"

His answer came out low and rough. "I married her because you left me. That's it. Now you're back, and I don't have to pretend anymore."

My knees almost gave out. I grabbed the doorframe.

She giggled, sweet as candy. "And your wife? What about her?"

He didn't even pause.

"She's Lumia's babysitter. Nothing more. Once he accepts you, I'll divorce her."

Babysitter.

Six years of cooking his dinners. Of sitting up with our son through every fever. Of giving up the job I loved because he said, *We don't need it. I want you home.*

Babysitter.

So that was where Lumia learned it.

*You took Daddy away. You're a bad woman.*

My whole body went cold, like I'd been dropped into ice water.

Then I heard her laugh again.

And I knew that laugh.

I had heard it before. Many, many times.

My heart started pounding. Slowly, I pushed the door one inch wider.

The woman lifted her head from the pillow and turned toward the light, her lips still smiling.

I stopped breathing.

It was a face I knew.

A face I would have trusted with my life.
