My Scars, His Unconditional Devotion Chapter 1

At eight months pregnant, my world was a pastel nursery and the gentle kicks of my unborn child. I believed my husband, Barron, and I were building a perfect future, a life filled with meticulous joy.

That future shattered with the splintering of our front door. A brutal assailant left me bleeding, but the true betrayal came in the ambulance. Through a fog of pain, I heard my husband' s cold, calculating voice on the phone.

He had orchestrated the attack to induce a miscarriage.

He needed our baby gone to fulfill a twisted promise: his firstborn had to be with another woman, Gisela.

The vicious assault not only killed our child but left me barren, my body permanently broken. His only regret was that the plan got messy, not that he had destroyed my life.

He thought he could cover it up with money and lies, forcing me to live beside the monster who had taken everything.

He was wrong. With the help of his horrified best friend, I staged my own death in a fiery car crash. Alexandria Barber is dead. And I am finally free.

Chapter 1

Alexandria POV

The first kick didn't break my ribs. It broke my trust.

My carefully built world shattered around me in the piercing wail of an ambulance siren, a sound that would forever echo the ultimate betrayal.

I was eight months pregnant, a living vessel for the future I had dreamed of, a future Barron and I had planned with such meticulous joy.

But that joy, I would soon discover, was a monstrous lie.

I was arranging a pastel mobile over the crib when the heavy thud against the front door jolted me from a peaceful evening.

The house, usually a sanctuary of quiet luxury, suddenly felt fragile.

Another, louder crash followed, then the splintering of wood.

My breath hitched. Fear, cold and sharp, pierced through the calm.

I clutched my swollen belly, an instinctive shield for my unborn child.

*My baby kicked inside me—a gentle flutter, as if to say, Don't worry, Mom. *

Footsteps pounded through the hallway. Rough, heavy boots. Not Barron. Not anyone I knew.

Panic seized me. I tried to push myself up, my body heavy and slow, but a shadow filled the doorway.

A large figure, cloaked in dark clothes, moved with chilling intent.

I backed away, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"Please," I whispered, my voice thin. "Don't hurt my baby."

The figure lunged.

A searing pain erupted in my abdomen, a brutal blow that stole my breath.

I collapsed, gasping, the world tilting precariously. Blood, a terrifying dark stain, bloomed on my nightgown.

My baby's kicks turned frantic—then silent.

My vision blurred, the room spinning. I desperately tried to protect my stomach, but another kick landed, vicious and precise.

Just as darkness threatened to consume me, a whirlwind of motion erupted.

Barron.

He burst into the room, a primal roar tearing from his throat. His fury was a tangible force.

He moved with brutal efficiency, a blur of fists and controlled violence. The assailant crumpled under his assault, a choked cry escaping them before they hit the floor, unconscious.

For a fleeting second, a wave of relief washed over me. Barron, my husband, my protector.

But the relief was short-lived. The pain in my abdomen intensified, a relentless, burning agony.

Barron was over me instantly, his face a mask of what looked like genuine terror.

"Get an ambulance! Now!" he roared into his phone, his voice shaking. "She's bleeding! My wife is bleeding! Save her, whatever it takes, just save her!"

Paramedics swarmed the house within minutes, their faces grim. They moved with urgency, their urgent voices a muffled drone.

They strapped me onto a stretcher, the movements jostling me, sending fresh waves of nausea and pain. Each jolt felt like a hammer blow against my soul.

I tried to focus on Barron's face, his anxious eyes, but consciousness was a rapidly receding shore.

The ambulance doors slammed shut, plunging me into a tight, vibrating space.

The sirens screamed, a relentless, piercing shriek.

I was drifting, a hazy world of pain and dim light.

But fragmented voices broke through the fog.

Barron's voice, cold and sharp, cut through the haze.

"Efrem, the situation is contained. The assailant… they're secured. Make sure they don't talk. We need to handle this quietly."

Efrem Bennett, Barron's best friend, an FBI agent. His voice was lower, laced with a tremor of disgust.

"Barron, this went too far. She's critically injured. This wasn't the plan."

"The plan was to ensure my firstborn was with Gisela, Efrem," Barron's voice was devoid of emotion, a chilling pronouncement. "It got out of hand, I admit, but the outcome is the same. Just make sure the legalities are handled. There's a settlement document. Make sure it gets signed. No loose ends."

My body went rigid with a sudden, horrifying clarity.

Gisela. His firstborn.

The words crashed down on me, shattering the last vestiges of my innocence.

"Gisela is pregnant, Barron," Efrem stated, his voice now a low growl of anger. "And you nearly killed Alexandria. You're a monster, Barron. You orchestrated an attack on your own wife and unborn child, all for some twisted promise."

The words ripped through me, a raw wound.

My husband. The man who swore to love and protect me.

He had done this. He had planned this.

Barron's reply was chillingly calm.

"My mentor, Gisela's father, made me promise on his deathbed that my first child would be with his daughter. It was an unbreakable vow. This was… unfortunate. But necessary."

I felt a sob catch in my throat, a silent scream that no one heard.

The scale of his betrayal, the cold calculation, was unfathomable.

Efrem exploded.

"Necessary? You call nearly murdering your wife and child 'necessary' for a political agreement? For a promise to a dead man? You're a goddamn sociopath, Barron!"

Efrem's voice rose, a raw, furious shout.

"Look at her! What have you done to her, you bastard? She might not make it!"

Barron's voice, though still controlled, held a faint tremor.

"It wasn't supposed to be like this. I told Gisela… just a scare. A miscarriage. Not… this."

He sounded almost regretful, but the regret was for the messy outcome, not for my suffering.

Then his voice firmed.

"Get her the best doctors. Whatever it costs. Whatever she needs. Money is no object."

"I swear, Alexandria," Barron's voice was closer now, a low murmur at the edge of my fading awareness. "I will protect you with my life. This will be my penance. My compensation."

His words were a cruel mockery, a fresh wave of agony washing over me.

He would protect me now? After he had orchestrated the attack?

My mind screamed.

The promises, the loving gestures, the shared dreams of our family – all of it collapsed into a heap of ash and lies.

My baby. Our baby. Gone.

Destroyed by the man I loved.

The despair was absolute, crushing me under its immense weight.

A single tear escaped, tracing a hot path down my temple, lost in my hair.

The ambulance doors opened, then closed again with a soft hiss, the muted sound sealing my fate, trapping me in a nightmare of my husband's making.

My hopes, my future, my very identity as a mother, shattered into countless pieces.

I closed my eyes.

When I opened them again, Alexandria Barber died inside me.

Only one question remained: How do you kill a monster who sleeps beside you?
