The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I know because I was staring at the ceremonial hall clock when Miles spoke the words. I'd been watching that clock for five years, counting down to this moment—the Mate Ceremony I thought we were finally having. The moment I thought would make everything worth it.

I was wrong about what kind of moment it would be.

The hall was full. Every wolf in Shadowvale Pack had come, dressed in their formal clothes, the air thick with expectation. I'd worn my best dress—the blue one I'd saved for, the one that didn't have work stains on the sleeves. My hands were shaking as I walked through the entrance, and I told myself it was excitement.

Then I saw her.

Jazlyn Miller stood beside Miles at the front of the hall, wearing ceremonial white. The traditional color a new Luna wears for her acceptance.

I stopped walking. My wolf—the one the pack said didn't exist, the one that had never fully awakened—stirred inside my chest for the first time in months. It wasn't excitement. It was warning.

Miles stepped forward before I could process what I was seeing. His face was composed. Practiced. He'd rehearsed this.

"I, Miles Lynch, Alpha of Shadowvale, reject you, Cora Fisher, as my mate and Luna."

The formal rejection vow. Spoken in front of the entire pack.

The mark on my neck split open with cold. Not pain—not yet—just cold, like someone had driven a shard of ice straight through the bone. The bond that had tied me to Miles for five years didn't snap. It peeled away, layer by layer, taking pieces of me with it.

My wolf screamed.

I heard it clearly for the first time—a howl from somewhere deep and unreachable inside my chest, a sound I didn't know I could make. My knees buckled. I hit the ceremonial floor hard, the cold spreading from my neck down through my ribs, my stomach, my legs.

The hall was silent.

I looked up. Miles was watching me with something that might have been regret if I didn't know him better. Jazlyn stood beside him, her expression carefully neutral, but I caught the edge of her smile.

Five years. Five years of cold border patrols while he was at luxury retreats. Five years of nursing his dying mother while he built political alliances. Five years of managing supply routes and territory wards and pack operations he took credit for.

He looked away first.

That was his answer.

The pain hit then—real pain, the kind that comes when a bond severs and your body doesn't understand why half of itself is missing. My wolf was still screaming, clawing at the inside of my chest, trying to reach something that was no longer there.

I pressed my palms flat against the floor. The stone was cold. Real. I focused on that.

Jazlyn stepped forward, her heels clicking on the ceremonial floor. She moved with the confidence of someone who'd already won.

"Strip her pendant," she said quietly, almost conversationally. She gestured to two Omega wolves standing near the wall. "Escort her out through the servants' exit."

The Omegas hesitated. One of them—a young she-wolf named Cara—looked at me with something like pity.

Miles said nothing.

I stared at him across the hall. He was still looking away, his jaw tight, his hands clasped behind his back in that formal Alpha stance I'd seen a thousand times. I thought about all the nights I'd spent alone on the western border, eating cold rations while he was somewhere warm. I thought about his mother calling my name in the dark, and how I was always the one who came.

I thought about the supply ledgers in my handwriting, the ward schedules only I knew, the correction protocols I'd been running for three years that kept this pack functional.

My wolf stopped screaming. It went quiet. Watchful.

I stood up.

The movement hurt—the severed bond sent another wave of cold through my chest—but I didn't let it show. I pulled myself upright, one hand pressed briefly to the hollow mark on my neck, and walked forward.

Not toward the servants' exit. Toward the front entrance.

The Omegas stepped aside. Jazlyn's smile faltered. The crowd parted without anyone giving an order.

I walked past Miles. Close enough that I could smell Jazlyn's floral perfume layered over his scent, proof of how long this had been planned. Close enough that he could have stopped me if he'd wanted to.

He didn't move.

I reached the front entrance and turned to face the hall. Every wolf in Shadowvale was staring at me—the same wolves who'd spent five years watching me work without acknowledgment, the same wolves who'd whispered that I was wolfless, unworthy, a liability.

I spoke clearly. My voice didn't shake.

"I'm leaving Shadowvale. I won't return. The supply route ledgers, the ward maintenance logs, and the border patrol schedules I maintained are no longer my responsibility."

I pulled the Luna pendant from around my neck—the one Miles had given me five years ago, before he decided I wasn't worth keeping—and set it carefully on the ground outside the entrance. Not thrown. Placed.

Then I walked into the dark.

Behind me, I heard the first whisper start. Then another. The crowd's murmur rose like a wave.

I didn't look back.

The hollow mark on my neck throbbed cold with every step, and my wolf was silent again, but I kept walking. Past the pack house. Past the territory line. Into the wilderness where no one's scent followed me.

I walked for three days.
