My Mate Suppressed My Wolf for Seven Years Chapter 1

The collar of Arianna's dress slipped at 8:47 on my thirtieth birthday, and by 8:49, I had no mate.

I was holding the ceremonial cup — the one I'd hand-painted myself, gold leaf on the rim — when I caught it. Not her perfume. Underneath her perfume. Dylan's scent, pressed into her skin the way it only gets pressed in after skin has been against skin for weeks, not hours. My stomach folded in on itself before my brain caught up to why.

Then she tilted her head to laugh at something, and her collar shifted, and I saw the bite. Healed. Silvered at the edges the way a mark settles after two, maybe three weeks.

The cup didn't shake in my hand. I want that on record. I didn't shake.

Something in my chest made a sound — not a howl, nothing that big, just a strangled little whimper, like a door closing on an empty room. My wolf, who hadn't spoken in seven years, tried to speak, and couldn't finish the sentence.

"Dylan." My voice came out steady. Two hundred pack members stopped talking. "Whose mark is that."

He didn't even flinch. That was the part that undid me — not the bite, the *ease* of him. He straightened his cuffs, the way he always did before he lied, except this time he wasn't lying.

"I, Dylan Harper, Alpha of Thornwood," he said, and his voice dropped into the Alpha tone, that pressure that used to buckle my knees, "reject you, Maisie Foster, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my throat went cold first. Then it went empty. I pressed my palm to it and felt nothing living underneath my own skin — like reaching for a pulse and finding a scar instead. My wolf screamed once, soundless, and dropped into a silence so total it felt like she'd never existed at all.

I reached up and tore the Luna pendant off my neck. The chain snapped clean. I threw it, and it hit the floor by his shoes and skidded to a stop against Arianna's heel.

"Then we're done," I said. My voice didn't crack. I'd promised myself it wouldn't, and it didn't.

Dylan's face flickered — not guilt, something closer to annoyance, like I'd interrupted a dinner reservation. He turned, swept his arm across the feast table I'd spent three days building, and sent every dish I'd cooked crashing to the floor. Roasted lamb, honey bread, the little iced cakes shaped like moons. Arianna smirked over his shoulder.

"Go to her quarters," Dylan said, nodding at Arianna, "and apologize. On your knees. You've upset my Luna's wolf."

I looked at the wreckage on the floor. I looked at him.

I walked out instead.

My things were already boxed in the corridor. The east wing door stood open — new curtains, new lamp, someone else's shoes by the door. I picked up the one box that mattered, the dried flowers from every mating ceremony I'd ever planned for other people's happiness, and I did not cry. I made myself a promise instead: I would remember every face in that hall tonight.

I walked the frozen perimeter to my mother's den before sunrise, blood-cold in my ceremony dress. I told the bolted door everything. Martha listened without opening it.

"A rejected she-wolf who leaves packless shames three generations," she said, flat as a ledger. "Dylan has offered you Omega quarters. Generously, considering. You'll come back when you're ready to crawl."

The bolt clicked shut like a verdict.

I stood there with my box of dead flowers until the sky went grey. I decided one thing in that cold: I would not crawl. I walked back to the pack house because I had no wolf, no allies, and nowhere else on this earth to go — and because staying close meant I'd find out exactly what Dylan was hiding, and why.

They gave me grey. A servants' cot in the block behind the kennels. Nessa came at dusk with the little brown bottle, not meeting my eyes.

"Standing order from the Alpha," she said.

I drank it, because I still believed it was medicine, because seven years of belief doesn't die as fast as a bond does. My body, which had spent the last week fighting something under my skin, went quiet again.

By morning I was on my knees scrubbing the hallway I used to preside over in silk. Pack members stepped around me without a glance — women I'd once sat beside at council, men whose pups I'd blessed. Not one of them said my name.

I kept scrubbing. I kept counting faces.

Then Arianna's laugh rang out from the east wing, sharp and pleased, and I heard her say to someone, clear as a bell down the corridor: "Tell the healer to double it. I want her *quiet."
