My Mate Rejected Me for His Chosen Luna Chapter 1

The mark on my neck went cold at the exact moment Dalton said my name in the vow, and I remember thinking, absurdly, that I hadn't even told him about the baby yet.

I'd climbed the ceremonial steps with that secret still warm in my chest, a private joy I hadn't let myself fully believe. I thought he'd gathered the pack to celebrate. I should have known better the second I saw the platform — every ranked wolf standing in stiff formal lines, no music, no flowers strung for a blessing. And Whitney at Dalton's left, in white. A Luna's white. A fresh garland already resting against her throat like she'd been fitted for it days ago.

Dalton turned to face the assembly before I could open my mouth.

"I, Dalton Ironveil, Alpha of this pack—" His voice dropped into the Alpha tone, and it rolled across the courtyard stone, amplified, inescapable. "—reject you, Amelia Hartley, as my mate, my Luna, and my bonded wife, before the eyes of the Moon Goddess and this pack."

The mark under my jaw ignited first — a flare of heat so sharp I gasped — and then it went out. Not faded. Extinguished. Like a door slamming shut on an empty room. My wolf shrieked once inside my skull and dropped, and I felt her go, felt the exact second she stopped fighting, and my knees buckled under me on the platform stone.

Heat trickled down the inside of my thigh. I didn't have to look to know what it was.

No one moved.

Dalton didn't even glance down at me. He turned, already reaching for Whitney's shoulders, already opening his mouth to start the marking rites that would make her what I had been for three humiliating years. Corwin Blake, our senior Beta, stepped forward with the transition scroll in his hands, throat clearing to begin.

I was still on one knee. My palm pressed flat against the cold stone, blood smeared where my fingers had dragged. The cramp in my belly was a live thing, savage, threatening to fold me the rest of the way down.

Whitney caught my eye across the platform. She smiled. Slow. Satisfied. A woman watching a debt finally get paid.

Somewhere behind me, the Gamma leaned toward his neighbor and murmured something I didn't catch. A low laugh answered him.

I stood up.

It cost me everything I had left. My legs shook. My vision went white at the edges. But I got my feet under me, and I straightened my spine, and I held it — ash-pale, bloody-fingered, upright.

"Stop," I said, and my voice carried, because I made sure it did. "I invoke my right under Lycan Council statute to call a Pack Tribunal before any new Luna marking is recorded as binding."

Corwin froze mid-syllable, scroll still raised.

Dalton turned back slowly. His jaw was tight enough to crack.

"Statute four-eleven," I said, meeting his eyes without blinking. "A rejected mate bearing a recognized life-claim cannot be dismissed before a sitting Tribunal reviews the bond's legitimacy." I had known that clause for three years. I had memorized it the night I first let myself imagine this day might come, and I had never once used it, because I never let myself believe it would matter. It mattered now. "I carry his child. That is a life-claim. You cannot proceed."

Dalton's face didn't change so much as harden, like something setting.

"Corwin." His voice snapped into the Alpha tone again, aimed now at his own Beta, flattening the air. "Continue the ceremony."

Something in me — something wounded, barely breathing — dragged itself upright anyway. Heat rolled off my skin in a pulse I didn't ask for and didn't understand, and the nearest ranked wolves actually staggered back a step, eyes wide, as if they'd touched something hot.

Dalton stared at me. Really stared, for the first time in three years, like he was seeing something he couldn't name.

Corwin did not lift the scroll again.

He looked between us — his Alpha, and me standing in my own blood with my chin still up — and I watched him do the math a pragmatist does when loyalty stops being free.

"The Tribunal request," he said, formal, final, on record before the whole courtyard, "is accepted."

Whitney's garland shifted. A single white petal broke loose and dropped, slow, spinning once before it landed on the stone between us like a period at the end of a sentence.
