My Mate Drugged My Wolf to Control Me Chapter 1

The scent hit me at 6:47 p.m., while I was smoothing the collar of Zachary's ceremonial shirt.

Magnolia. Sweet, expensive, faintly synthetic — the kind a woman chooses because she wants to be remembered. It was not on the collar. It was inside the weave, threaded through the fibers of the chest and the ribs where a body would press against a body, low and warm and long enough to leave a mark scent could not wash out.

My fingers stopped moving.

Something in my chest — the wolf I hadn't heard in twenty years, the wolf I had been told was old, tired, quiet — made a sound. Not a howl. Something rawer. A single strangled note, like a woman trying to speak through a hand over her mouth.

I set the shirt down on the bed. I smoothed it flat. I did not cry.

I followed the scent.

It led me through the east corridor of the pack house, past the portraits of Willis Alphas I had spent twenty years curtsying to in my own head. Past the linen closet where I still folded his undershirts by hand. To his office door.

The emergency override was six digits I had memorized the year Jordyn was born and never used. I keyed them in. The lock gave.

The scent thickened. Not from a letter. Not from a photograph. From the bottom drawer of his desk.

I opened it.

Wolfsbane vials. Neat rows. Small, dark glass, each one labeled in Zachary's precise handwriting. *Dose 3.2mg. Body weight 132lb. Nightly.* *Dose 3.4mg. Body weight 135lb. Nightly.* Some of the labels were years old. Some were fresh. Behind the vials, a small brass funnel. A pair of tweezers. A logbook.

I understood in one breath.

Every morning I had woken with my bones feeling like paper. Every time I had touched the silver scars along my ribs and thought, *this is what saving him cost me.* Every whisper of my own wolf gone thin and far away, until I stopped listening for her at all. Twenty years of being told I was fading, aging, softening into the role — and none of it, none of it, had been mine.

He built my smallness. Vial by vial. Cup by cup.

My hands did not shake. I took out my phone. I photographed the drawer wide, then close. Every label. Every dosage. The logbook, open to the last page — dated three nights ago.

I moved to the filing cabinet.

Underneath a ledger of eastern territory grazing rights, I found her transfer papers. *Giana Rice — Rogue Status Waived — Sponsor: Alpha Zachary Willis.* His signature at the bottom, looped and casual, the same signature he had used on our daughter's birth certificate.

I plugged my drive into his terminal. His mind-link logs were restricted, but the restriction was his, and his passwords were the birthdays of men he admired. Three years of blocked channels copied over in under a minute.

I put everything back. Every vial angled exactly as I had found it. The logbook closed on the same corner. The drawer flush. I wiped the desk edge with the sleeve of my cardigan.

Forty minutes. I had built the skeleton of a criminal case in forty minutes.

I walked back to our bedroom, hung his shirt on the valet stand, and went downstairs to start the roast.

He came home at 8:15, radiating warmth through the bond like sunlight through a stained glass window. *Sweetheart. Something smells incredible.*

I reached for the door in my mind — the mate bond channel I had left open every hour of every day for twenty years, the way a lamp is left burning for a man coming home late — and I closed it. Quietly. Without slamming. A hand pressing a door shut in a house nobody knew was empty.

He felt nothing change. That was the point.

"How was your afternoon?" I asked, ladling gravy.

"Long." He kissed my temple. Cedar. Magnolia. Cedar. Magnolia. "Are we still on Veronica's left for the seating?"

"She asked for the left. I moved the Hales down one."

"Good." He sat. He unfolded his napkin. "You look tired, love. Drink your tea."

The cup was already at my place. Steam curling. Chamomile, he always said. Chamomile for my nerves.

I lifted it. I smiled. I did not drink.

"After dinner," I said. "It's still too hot."

He nodded and reached for the bread.

---

At 4:12 in the morning I sat at my vanity in the dark and sent it all.

The photos. The vials. The papers. The logs. Everything, through the private frequency Jordyn and I had built when she was nine and afraid of thunder — a channel her father had never known existed because it lived beneath the register he could hear.

Her reply came in ninety seconds.

*I'm filing. Be ready. Don't let him see your face change.*

I went downstairs in bare feet. I took the kettle off the shelf. I opened my own cabinet — the one behind the flour — and pulled out a tin of loose-leaf jasmine I had bought six years ago and never used, because he always brought me tea.

I brewed it myself.

I stood at the kitchen window in the dark and I drank it, and it was the first clean thing I had put in my body in twenty years.

Upstairs, in the silver gown, I swept my hair up and pinned it high, exposing the mark on my neck to the morning air. His teeth. Twenty years old. Still there.

I would wear it, one last time, where every wolf in the hall could see it.

On my own terms.

Downstairs, the front door opened. Zachary's voice, low, on the phone.

"Tonight," he said. "After the toast. She won't make it to dessert."
