My Husband Used Me to Fund His Mistress Chapter 1

The meatloaf wasn't going to make itself.

I had my hands in the bowl—ground beef, breadcrumbs, two eggs, the paprika Margaret liked—when I reached over with my elbow and woke my phone screen. Force of habit. I'd been doing that for three years: cooking with both hands, scrolling with whatever was free.

The video autoplayed.

A woman. Pretty. Sitting cross-legged on a cream-colored bed, surrounded by boxes. She had long nails, the kind you can't actually work in, and she was pulling tissue paper out of a bag like it was the most important thing that had ever happened.

"Oh my God, babe," she said to the camera. "Oh my GOD."

I almost kept scrolling.

Then I saw the shipping label.

My hands went still in the bowl.

I know shipping labels the way other people know faces. I spent six years routing freight across the Pacific Northwest before I traded it all in for a kitchen and a wheelchair schedule. That label—the font, the hub code, the carrier stripe—I'd processed thousands like it. I knew exactly which distribution center it came from. I knew the weight tier. And when she tilted the box toward the camera, laughing, the receipt slid into frame for exactly two seconds.

Two seconds was enough.

The amount matched a withdrawal I'd noticed three weeks ago. I'd told myself it was a car payment I'd miscalculated. I'd told myself a lot of things.

I stood there with raw meat on my hands and watched Kehlani Gutierrez hold up a bag that I had paid for.

The video had 200,000 views. The comments said things like *he's so lucky to have you* and *relationship goals.*

I washed my hands. Slowly. All the way up to the wrists.

I was still standing at the sink when the front door opened.

Leroy came in first. He had his coat on, the good one, and he was smiling in that loose, comfortable way he smiled when he felt untouchable. He didn't look at me right away. He was holding the door open for someone behind him.

Kehlani Gutierrez walked into my house wearing a coat I recognized from a different box in the video.

She looked around the kitchen the way people look at hotel rooms they've already decided are beneath them.

Leroy straightened his watch. I'd seen him do that a thousand times. I'd never understood why until right now.

"Elina." His voice was easy. Conversational. Like we were about to discuss the grocery list. "We need to talk about the living situation."

I didn't say anything.

He reached into his coat and pulled out a folder. Set it on the counter between us. Tapped it once with two fingers.

"You signed these three years ago," he said. "With the refinancing paperwork. Remember that stack? You didn't read all of it." A small pause. "Nobody does."

I opened the folder.

Divorce decree. My signature at the bottom. Notarized.

The date was three years ago. February. I remembered that week. Margaret had a respiratory infection. I'd been running on four hours of sleep for six days straight. Leroy had put a pen in my hand and said *just the highlighted parts, it's the refi, the broker needs it by five.*

I looked at my signature for a long time.

Kehlani made a soft sound. Not quite a laugh. The kind of sound that means *I've been waiting for this.*

"So," Leroy said, "you understand you don't have a legal claim here. The house, the accounts—" He spread his hands. Generous. Explaining something obvious to someone slow. "You've been a great help with my mother. I want you to know that."

In the next room, I could hear Margaret's wheelchair. The small creak it made when she shifted her weight. She didn't come in.

She knew. She had always known.

The bowl of meatloaf mix was still on the counter.

I picked it up.

I looked at Kehlani's coat—the one from the video, the one I'd paid for—and I threw the entire bowl directly into the center of her chest.

The sound it made was deeply satisfying.

She screamed. Leroy lunged forward. I set the empty bowl down on the counter with a small, precise click, stepped around both of them, and walked upstairs.

I didn't hurry. I didn't slam anything.

They were still shouting when I closed the bedroom door.

I worked until three in the morning.

Every financial record in the house. Bank statements. Transfer confirmations. A folder Leroy kept in the back of his desk drawer that he thought I'd never found because he'd moved it twice. I photographed everything and loaded it to a secure drive I'd bought two years ago for work documents and never cleared.

At three-fifteen, I got dressed. I took twenty minutes. I did it carefully.

Then I went to the breaker box in the utility room and I shut off the power.

The house went dark and quiet.

I walked out the front door into the Seattle rain and I didn't look back. Not at the windows. Not at Margaret's room. Not at anything.

The diner on Fifth was open all night. I took the corner booth, ordered black coffee, and when Leroy's first message came through—*why is the heat off*—I read it, set my phone face-down, and opened my notebook.

I drew a box in the center of the page. Then I drew lines out from it. Then I started writing names.

The coffee went cold. I didn't notice.
