Chapter 2

The air between us crackled with tension as Demi's words hung in the air. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, sensing the threat before my human mind could fully process it. But as Demi gestured dismissively, something caught the light at her throat—a brilliant blue glint that made my breath catch.

My eyes locked onto the pendant hanging from her neck. A teardrop-shaped sapphire set in ancient silver, surrounded by tiny moonstone beads that captured and reflected the light. I knew it instantly.

"The Moon Goddess's Tear," I whispered, my voice barely audible.

Demi's hand flew to the necklace, her fingers caressing the gem with obvious pride. "Oh, this old thing? August gave it to me as a symbol of our bond."

The world seemed to tilt beneath my feet. That "old thing" was no ordinary necklace. It was a sacred artifact, passed down through generations of Lunas in the Silver Claw Pack. Elena had shown it to me during my first year as Luna, explaining that it would be mine during the Pack Anniversary celebration next month.

"It's not his to give," I said, my voice steady despite the rage building inside me. "It belongs to the Luna of Silver Claw Pack."

Demi laughed, the sound like breaking glass. "Oh, honey. You still think you're Luna? August has already commissioned my ceremony. We're just waiting for the right moment to announce it."

Sasha trembled beside me, her eyes wide with fear. I placed a protective hand on her shoulder, drawing strength from her presence even as I prepared to confront this intruder.

"I am Luna Anastasia Reed," I said, letting my Luna tone fill the space between us. The power in my voice made the receptionist flinch, but Demi merely smirked. "That necklace is a sacred artifact meant only for the true Luna. Return it to me and vacate these premises immediately."

Demi's laughter echoed through the villa. "You're so funny with your outdated traditions. August chose me because I satisfy him in ways a boring traditionalist like you never could." She stepped closer, her scent—that cloying, artificial smell—making my wolf recoil. "He says I'm his chosen mate. Not his fated mate. There's a difference."

"Chosen?" I repeated, the word tasting bitter on my tongue.

"Exactly." Demi's smile widened, revealing teeth that seemed too sharp somehow. "Fated mates are just an old myth. August believes in choosing his own destiny." She gestured around the villa. "And he chose me."

My hands shook with barely contained fury. August hadn't just betrayed me—he'd stolen a sacred artifact from our pack and given it to this... this counterfeit Luna.

"He's wrong," I said, my voice low and dangerous. "The Moon Goddess's will cannot be defied."

"Can't be defied?" Demi laughed again. "Honey, I'm wearing her tear around my neck, and guess what? Nothing's happened to me."

I closed my eyes, fighting for control. My wolf howled inside me, demanding release, demanding justice. But Sasha needed me to be strong, not feral.

I reached for the mind-link that connected me to August. It was our most intimate connection—the sacred bond that had formed when we mated. Through it, I could share images, emotions, thoughts with him across any distance.

*August,* I called through our link. *I need you.*

There was a moment of silence, then I felt his presence in my mind. But instead of the warm connection I expected, I felt a cold wall slamming down between us.

*What is it, Anastasia?* His mental voice was clipped, annoyed.

I projected an image of Demi, of the Moon Goddess's Tear gleaming at her throat, of Sasha cowering beside me.

*She's wearing the sacred Luna artifact. She's claiming to be your chosen mate. What is going on?*

I waited for his outrage, for his immediate denial, for him to rush to my side. Instead, I felt his displeasure pulsing through our bond.

*Don't make a scene, Anastasia,* he replied, his mental voice cold. *Demi is sensitive. Let her have the villa. You can stay in the guest quarters.*

The betrayal hit me like a physical blow. I staggered back, my hand flying to my chest where our mate bond burned like acid.

*August, she's wearing the Moon Goddess's Tear,* I insisted.

*I know,* he replied, and the casual dismissal in his tone shattered something inside me. *I gave it to her. She deserves it more than you do right now.*

The mind-link went silent, leaving me standing there, frozen in shock and pain.

Chapter 3

The silence that followed August's words through our mind-link was deafening. I stood frozen, unable to process the casual cruelty in his tone. Before I could respond, Demi's voice cut through the air again.

"Is that August on the phone?" she asked, her lips curving into a malicious smile as she pulled out her own phone. "Let me join the conversation."

My stomach dropped as she tapped the screen and held the phone up. August's voice filled the space between us, echoing from her speaker.

"Anastasia, what's going on? Why are you still there?"

I opened my mouth to respond, but Demi's eyes gleamed with triumph as she spoke first.

"Hey, baby. Your wife is being difficult. She's making a scene at our villa."

Our villa. The casual possessiveness in her voice made my wolf howl with rage.

"Anastasia," August's voice hardened through the link and the phone speaker simultaneously. "I told you to leave."

The receptionist and several staff members who had gathered nearby watched with wide eyes. This wasn't just a private humiliation anymore—August was broadcasting his betrayal to everyone present.

"August," I began, fighting to keep my voice steady. "You can't possibly—"

"I can and I am," he cut me off. Then I felt it—the crushing weight of his Alpha command pressing down through our bond.

"Submit."

The word reverberated through my mind-link with the full force of his Alpha authority. My wolf, who had been snarling with defiance seconds before, whimpered and lowered her head instinctively. The submission was involuntary, primal—a response built into every werewolf's DNA.

My knees buckled slightly as the command took hold. I gasped, fighting against the compulsion, but it was useless. An Alpha's direct command to his Luna was nearly impossible to resist.

"Oh, this is priceless," Demi laughed, her voice echoing through the phone's speaker. She held the phone higher, making sure everyone could hear. "Look at her, August. Your mighty Luna can't even stand up straight."

Sasha's hand gripped my arm, steadying me as I struggled against the command. Her touch anchored me, reminding me that I wasn't alone.

"You're hurting her," Sasha said, her voice quavering but determined as she stepped forward. "You're hurting my sister-in-law."

Demi's gaze shifted to Sasha, her eyes narrowing dangerously. "And who are you supposed to be? The cripple's spokesperson?"

"I'm Sasha Arnold," she said, her voice gaining strength with each word. "And you're a thief."

The word hung in the air between us. Demi's expression darkened, her pleasant mask slipping to reveal something ugly underneath.

"A thief?" she repeated softly. Then she snapped her fingers sharply.

The sound echoed through the courtyard, and suddenly five large men emerged from the shadows of the villa. They moved with practiced precision, forming a semicircle around us.

"These are my security team," Demi said with false sweetness. "They're here to make sure nothing... unfortunate happens."

I inhaled sharply, catching their scent. It wasn't the clean, earthy smell of pack warriors. These men reeked of the outside—of rogue territories and lawlessness.

"They're not pack," I whispered to Sasha. "They're rogues."

Demi's smile widened. "Very observant, Luna. August pays them well to handle... delicate situations."

One of the men stepped forward, his eyes cold as he assessed us. I pushed Sasha behind me protectively, but she surprised me by stepping out from my shadow.

"You can't do this," she said, her voice stronger than I'd ever heard it. "The Moon Goddess's Tear belongs to the true Luna."

Something dangerous flashed in Demi's eyes. Without warning, she lunged forward and snatched the velvet pouch from my bag—the one containing Sasha's precious healing artifacts.

"Let's see how much you need these," she hissed.

With deliberate cruelty, she upended the pouch over the stone pathway. The sound of glass vials shattering echoed through the courtyard as precious herbs and oils spilled onto the ground.

"No!" Sasha cried out, reaching for the scattered remains.

Demi's laughter rang out as she brought her heel down on a glass vial, grinding it into the pavement with a sickening crunch. The scent of crushed lavender and sage—herbs meant to soothe Sasha's traumatized wolf—filled the air.

"Oops," she said with mock innocence. "Looks like someone's healing journey just hit a snag."

I watched in horror as she systematically destroyed each vial, each carefully gathered ingredient that had taken months to collect. These weren't just herbs—they were Sasha's hope, her chance at recovery.

"Stop," I pleaded, my voice breaking as I watched the last vial crumble under Demi's heel.

She looked up at me, her eyes glittering with malice. "Make me."

Chapter 4

"Sasha!" I screamed as she collapsed to her knees, desperately trying to salvage what remained of her precious herbs.

Demi's laughter echoed through the courtyard as she deliberately brought her heel down on another vial. The sound of glass shattering seemed to pierce through my very soul.

"Stop," I begged, my voice breaking. "Those are her only hope."

"Hope?" Demi repeated, her eyes gleaming with malice. "How pathetic."

Sasha's fingers trembled as she reached for a small pouch that had somehow survived the initial onslaught. Her eyes filled with tears as she clutched it to her chest.

"Please," she whispered. "Just this one."

Something in Demi's expression shifted—a flicker of rage that transformed her beautiful features into something monstrous. Without warning, she drew back her foot and kicked Sasha squarely in the ribs.

The sound of impact made my stomach lurch. Sasha crumpled forward, the air rushing from her lungs in a painful gasp. Her body curled into itself as she struggled to breathe.

"You cripple," Demi hissed. "You're not even worth the effort."

I dropped to my knees beside Sasha, my hands hovering over her trembling form. "Sasha, baby, where are you hurt?"

"Ribs," she managed to whisper, her face contorted in pain. "Can't... breathe..."

Something inside me snapped. The last thread of restraint I'd been clinging to—the last vestige of the dutiful Luna who respected pack hierarchy and tradition—disappeared in an instant.

"She's wolfless!" I snarled, gathering Sasha into my arms. "She can't heal like we can!"

Demi shrugged, examining her perfectly manicured nails. "Not my problem."

The world around me blurred red. My skin prickled as the shift began—not the controlled, careful transformation I'd been taught since childhood, but something wild and furious that tore through me like a storm.

"Anastasia," Sasha gasped, her eyes wide with fear. "Don't—"

But it was too late. My bones cracked and reformed as my body contorted. Silver-white fur erupted across my skin, gleaming in the sunlight as I completed the transformation.

Where once stood a woman now crouched a massive wolf—larger than any female wolf in our pack, with fur that seemed to capture and reflect the sunlight. My wolf had always been unusual—too large, too fierce for a Luna. August had once called it my "Alpha wolf." Now, I understood why.

I threw back my head and released a roar that shook the windows of the villa. The glass trembled in its frames as my fury echoed across the cliffside.

Demi's smug expression vanished. Her eyes widened in genuine fear as she stumbled backward, her hand flying to her throat—to the Moon Goddess's Tear that hung there like a mockery.

"Get behind me!" she shrieked to her enforcers. Gone was the tough Alpha female act, replaced by raw terror.

The rogues moved with practiced efficiency, forming a protective wall between their employer and me. I saw the calculation in their eyes—they knew what they were facing. Not just any wolf, but a Luna in full fury.

"Shift!" Demi commanded, her voice shrill. "Now! Stop her!"

The air filled with the sounds of bones cracking and bodies contorting as the five rogues transformed into their wolf forms. Unlike my sleek, powerful shape, their wolves were patchy and scarred—the result of lives lived outside pack protection and healing.

They circled me, five against one, their eyes gleaming with predatory hunger. I positioned myself over Sasha's prone form, my massive body serving as a shield.

The first rogue lunged from the left, aiming for my exposed flank. I pivoted and caught him mid-air, my jaws closing around his throat. Blood filled my mouth as I shook violently, throwing him against the stone wall.

But the victory was short-lived. Two more rogues attacked from opposite sides, their teeth sinking into my shoulders. Pain lanced through me as I howled and twisted, trying to dislodge them.

I caught one by the scruff and hurled him toward the cliff edge. He yelped as he tumbled through the air before catching himself on a rocky outcropping.

The remaining rogues pressed their advantage, sensing my distraction. I felt teeth tear into my flank, ripping through fur and flesh. Blood matted my silver coat as I fought to maintain my position over Sasha.

"Stay down," I growled at her through our pack bond. "Don't move."

She trembled beneath me, her eyes wide with fear and something else—a strange golden light that flickered briefly before dimming again.

The largest rogue, a mangy brown beast with scars crisscrossing his muzzle, lunged for my throat. I ducked and slashed upward, catching him under the chin. He yelped in pain but kept coming.

I fought with everything I had—for Sasha, for the sacred artifacts, for the honor of my position. But as another rogue's teeth sank into my shoulder blade, I realized with growing dread that I couldn't hold them off much longer.
