My Husband Stole My Research for His Mistress Chapter 1

The café was busy for a Tuesday afternoon, the kind of midday rush that made the barista's voice carry over the hum of conversation. I stood in line behind three undergraduates, my phone buzzing with a reminder from Cameron about picking up his lunch on my way home from another fertility appointment he couldn't be bothered to attend. Seven years of marriage, and this was our rhythm now—me, the errand runner, the appointment keeper, the keeper of all the small details that kept his professional life humming while mine had withered into domestic routine.

The barista's voice cut through my thoughts with practiced efficiency: "Light ice, quarter sweet, oat milk boba for Cameron!" She slid the cup across the counter, and something cold and precise clicked into place behind my ribs.

I froze. In seven years of marriage, I had never once seen Cameron drink boba. Not once. He was a coffee man, black and bitter, the same way I took mine. We used to joke about it in the early days, how we were both too sharp for sugar. Yet here was this cup, customized with the kind of obsessive specificity that spoke of intimate familiarity.

I took the cup and studied the handwritten label. Cameron's name was written in the café's standard Sharpie, but the details—the "quarter sweet," the "oat milk"—were noted with the kind of precision that suggested the orderer had memorized them. My fingers traced the condensation on the plastic, and I felt something shift inside me, a door closing on a room I'd been standing in for far too long.

That night, I waited until the shower started running. The sound of water hitting tile created a white noise that masked my movements as I picked up Cameron's phone from the nightstand. He never used a passcode around me—why would he need to? I was the wife who never questioned, never challenged, never invaded his space. I was the safe one.

The messages between him and Daisy Perkins stretched back months. Late-night "academic discussions" that wandered into personal territory. Inside jokes that made my stomach clench. Voice memos of Daisy's breathy laugh that echoed in the dark bedroom. And there it was, buried in a thread from weeks ago: "You remembered my order! Light ice, quarter sweet, oat milk. You're the best, Dr. D."

In seven years, Cameron had never once learned that I took my coffee black. He'd never memorized my preferences, never made note of the small details that made up my daily existence. But he'd memorized her drink order within weeks of meeting her.

I closed the phone and replaced it exactly where I'd found it. The shower was still running, steam seeping under the bathroom door like a slow invasion. I lay back on our bed—the bed where I'd endured countless nights of his cold back turned toward me—and stared at the ceiling. I didn't sleep that night. I didn't cry. I simply watched the shadows shift across the walls and waited for morning.

Three days later, I came home early from another fertility clinic appointment. The nurse had been kind, her voice gentle as she explained the next round of injections Cameron had insisted we try but couldn't drive me to because of a faculty meeting. The irony wasn't lost on me—I was injecting hormones to create a child for a man who couldn't be bothered to hold my hand through the process.

The sound of laughter hit me before I reached the front door. Daisy's voice, light and musical, floating through the hallway. I pushed the door open and found her sitting on my couch, wearing Cameron's Columbia hoodie, her hair damp as if she'd just showered. In my bathroom. Using my towels.

She held a mug in both hands, the ceramic warm against her palms. I recognized it immediately—the one that read "Professor's Favorite" in cheery script, a gift from his last batch of advisees. She was sipping from it like it belonged to her, like she belonged here.

Cameron emerged from the kitchen carrying two plates of pasta. In seven years, he had never once cooked for me. Not once. But here he was, playing the domestic partner for another woman in our home.

Daisy looked up and smiled, all wide-eyed innocence. "Oh—Cameron said you wouldn't mind. I got caught in the rain after our research session."

The words landed with surgical precision. Something ancient and patient inside me finally, cleanly, snapped. I walked to the bedroom, opened the filing cabinet where I kept the papers I'd had drawn up months ago, and retrieved the divorce documents. I signed them at the kitchen counter, uncapping the pen with my teeth, the scratch of ink on paper the only sound in the suddenly silent room.

I slid the papers across the counter to Cameron, who stared at them with a face that cycled through confusion, offense, and a flicker of fear. Then I turned to Daisy, still clutching that mug with both hands, performing her role as the bewildered innocent.

"You can keep the hoodie," I said, my voice steady and calm.

I picked up my bag and walked out the front door without looking back, leaving Cameron standing at the kitchen counter with the signed divorce papers under his hands and the taste of his own medicine finally on his tongue.
