My Husband Stole My Company While I Was Comatose Chapter 1

I opened my eyes on Christmas morning.

That was the first thing I knew — not where I was, not how long I'd been gone, just the fact that my eyelids had obeyed a command I didn't remember giving. Light came in sharp and white through a window I couldn't turn my head to see. The ceiling was pale blue. There were tiles. I counted them without meaning to. Twelve across. Maybe fourteen down. A camera blinked red in the corner.

Then I heard the sound.

Low. Rhythmic. Breathing that wasn't mine.

I tried to move my head. It took everything I had — every shred of will I didn't know I still possessed — and my skull shifted maybe two inches to the left. Pain spiked through my neck. My vision blurred, then cleared.

That's when I saw them.

Paxton was on the couch.

He wasn't alone.

A woman was pressed against him, her back arched, her hair falling in a dark curtain across his chest. Her blouse was half-unbuttoned. His hand was on her waist, fingers splayed possessively across bare skin. They were kissing — slow, unhurried, like they had all the time in the world. Like I wasn't ten feet away with an IV still in my arm and machines beeping a steady rhythm that said I was alive, I was here, I was watching.

I blinked.

They didn't stop.

My throat was dry. I tried to swallow and couldn't. My lips were cracked. I tasted blood. I pulled air into my lungs — it hurt, like breathing through broken glass — and I forced sound up through my chest.

"Paxton."

It came out as a whisper. Barely human. But it was enough.

He froze.

The woman pulled back, startled, her hand flying to her mouth. Paxton's head snapped toward me, and for one long, crystalline second, I watched every emotion cross his face in sequence: shock, guilt, calculation, and then — so fast I almost missed it — relief.

He stood. Smoothed his shirt. Crossed the room in four strides.

"Arlette." His voice was warm. Tender. Like he'd been waiting by my bedside every day for three years. "Oh my God. You're awake."

I stared at him.

He reached for my hand. I didn't pull away — I couldn't, my body wouldn't respond fast enough — so his fingers closed around mine. Warm. Steady. The same hand that had been on her waist thirty seconds ago.

"I need to call the doctor," he said, already turning, already performing. "Nurse! We need someone in here now!"

The woman stepped forward. She'd buttoned her blouse. Fixed her hair. When she spoke, her voice was calm, professional, like nothing had happened.

"I'm Dr. Ortiz," she said, meeting my eyes with a small, practiced smile. "I'm part of your care team. It's wonderful to see you awake, Mrs. Kelley."

Mrs. Kelley.

I looked at her. Really looked. She was young. Late twenties, maybe. Pretty in an effortless way — clear skin, dark eyes, the kind of face that photographs well. She held a tablet like a shield. Behind her, Paxton was already on his phone, summoning the cavalry, his voice tight with what anyone else would mistake for concern.

I tried to speak again. My lips moved. No sound came.

Dr. Ortiz stepped closer, lifting a plastic cup with a straw. "Here," she said gently. "Small sips."

I didn't take it.

She set it on the table beside me, still smiling.

The room began to fill. Nurses. A doctor I didn't recognize. Paxton stood at the center of it all, directing traffic, answering questions, his hand on my shoulder like an anchor. Like proof.

"I never left her side," I heard him say to someone in scrubs. "Not once in three years."

I closed my eyes.

When I opened them again, the room had quieted. Paxton was seated beside me, his face arranged in an expression of exhausted devotion. Dr. Ortiz stood near the door, typing something into her tablet. The machines beeped. The IV dripped.

I turned my head — slower this time, more controlled — and looked directly at Paxton.

He leaned in. "You're going to be okay," he whispered. "I'm here. I've got you."

I pulled air into my lungs. Forced my throat to work. Shaped the words carefully, one by one, until they came out clear enough for him to hear.

"The only way this marriage ends," I said, "is if one of us is dead."

His face went still.

I held his gaze until he looked away.

Then I closed my eyes and started counting ceiling tiles again.
