My Husband Sold Our Marriage to Train an AI Chapter 1

Amelia's POV

"Turn it off, Millie." Oliver reached across the linen tablecloth and pressed his thumb against my phone screen, silencing the video. "You're turning a generic tech ad into literary archaeology again."

I stared at the black screen. Beside my phone sat the framed first page of my debut novel, a gift for our fifteenth anniversary. Across the bottom margin, the words Ask for more were scrawled in my faded blue ink. That 312-page manuscript used to be proof that we built something real.

"I was just listening to the cadence," I said, sliding the phone back toward my plate. I had planned to read him the dedication for my upcoming release tonight.

Oliver did not look up. His thumbs flew across his own screen, answering work emails. "Your success makes you think you invented romance. It's an algorithm, Amelia. It generates comfort."

His dismissal stung, layering the impatient man sitting across from me over the husband who once stayed up for three days straight to help me format my eleventh rejected draft.

Before I could reply, my screen lit up. The Heartline advertisement auto-played, the volume loud in the quiet dining room. A gentle, synthetic male voice filled the space between us.

"Count the blue lights overhead, count until your breath comes back."

My fingers tightened around my wine glass. The cadence, the exact two-second pause before the second clause—it was identical. Nine years ago, bleeding in a sterile hospital room, I had listened to Oliver leave that exact phrasing on a private voice note while he rushed through traffic to reach me.

"Did you give that recording to your company?" I asked, keeping my tone entirely flat.

Oliver picked up his napkin and wiped the corner of his mouth. "Of course not."

He went back to his steak. I pushed my chair back and walked to the kitchen.

Standing by the marble island, I opened the Heartline app. The cursor blinked in the text box. I typed five words: writer losing an unborn child.

The AI generated a standard paragraph about grief and time. Then, a new bubble popped up.

You will navigate this dark water, my north star.

My stomach dropped. North star. I never used that phrase in my books, never spoke it in interviews, never posted it online. It existed exclusively in our encrypted family cloud drive, buried in unmailed letters and late-night audio files.

A hand snatched the device from my grip.

"Spying on a chatbot now?" Oliver asked, scanning the screen. He let out a short, harsh laugh. "You've spent fifteen years processing our lives into paperback commodities, Millie. Don't act like you own the copyright to grief."

I faced him. "Did you use our family cloud for a commercial project?"

Oliver looked right at me. His jaw tightened, a half-second delay ticking past before he spoke. "I do behavioral design, not marriage eavesdropping."

That fraction of a second was louder than a confession. I reached out and pulled the phone from his fingers.

"Enjoy your anniversary dessert," I said, walking past him toward the stairs.

Inside my office, I bypassed my writing software and logged directly into the administrative backend of our shared server. I clicked through the device logs.

Eighteen months ago. A folder titled Family Archive Migration had been exported.

I opened the directory properties. 48,216 chat messages. 603 voice notes. 127 unmailed letters and audio recordings of our worst fights. The timestamp matched the exact Tuesday he brought me a cup of tea and asked me to sign a routine digital authorization to migrate our old photos to a safer server.

Footsteps sounded in the hallway. Oliver stepped into the doorway of my office, loosening his tie.

"Are you going to pout all night?" he asked.

I turned the monitor so he could see the screen. "Forty-eight thousand, two hundred and sixteen messages. Six hundred and three voice notes. One hundred and twenty-seven letters."

He stopped adjusting his collar.

"Don't tell me these are just reference materials," I said, my voice steady. "Did you sell our marriage?"

"Not sell," Oliver corrected, stepping fully into the room. "Licensed."

I stood up. "Licensed."

"Heartline needed long-term partner data to train the model for authentic intimacy," he said, gesturing to the screen as if explaining a simple math problem. "We had fifteen years of complete, continuous, emotionally rich logs. It was the perfect sample."

He described our miscarriages, whispered apologies, and private jokes in product language. The man I married had quantified my pain and fed it to a machine.

I did not scream. I did not throw the framed manuscript sitting on my desk. Instead, I slid my encrypted hard drive into the side port of the tower.

"Let me show you the rest," Oliver said, moving toward the desk. "It's completely anonymized. The users just get the structural empathy."

While he spoke, I highlighted the export directory, the authorization logs, and the server traffic history. I dragged them onto my external drive. I was securing the evidence before I bothered saving the relationship.

"Show me the contract," I said.

"Amelia, you don't understand the tech side."

"Show me the contract, Oliver, or I call your CEO right now and ask him how much he paid for my dead baby's memory."

His face hardened. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out his phone, and forwarded a PDF to my inbox.

I opened the attachment.

The numbers jumped off the page. Six hundred thousand pounds. One point five percent equity in Heartline. The payment instructions pointed to an offshore account he had never mentioned.

I scrolled down to the data source declaration. It did not say Anonymous Couple Sample.

It read: A. Grant Marital Archive.

"You used my name to increase the valuation," I stated, the cold reality settling in my chest. "Because I'm a bestselling romance author. My words are worth more."

"It's just an internal label," he insisted, finally reaching for the laptop keyboard to close the window.

I clicked to the final page of the document before his fingers could touch the keys.

Right below Oliver Reed's digital signature, a handwritten note was scanned into the margin.

Wife does not need to know details, she already agreed I manage our shared memory.

Oliver saw the line on the screen, and his hand froze in midair.
